Last month a Tumblr-inspired Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o heist film ideation caused Twitter to go crazy so much that it reeled in the attention of not only Rihanna and Lupita, but also the ladies who are now slated to create the film, Queen Sugar‘s Ava DuVernay and Insecure‘s Issa Rae.
Entertainment Weekly reports that an “aggressive” bidding war went on over the yet-to-be-titled film at Cannes Film Festival and Netflix won.
Ava posted a celebratory tweet announcing the news.

The whole idea for this movie kicked off when a Twitter user retweeted a picture of Rih and Lupita sitting next to each other at Miu Miu’s Paris Fashion Week show with a caption describing the pair as partners in crime, stealthily scamming rich white men.

Then a what-if story unfolded and the pleas for Rihanna, Lupita, Ava and Issa’s participation began. They’re all down.

With the second season of Insecure getting ready to premiere this summer, Issa has found the time to reportedly write the script, which will go into production at the top of 2018 after DuVernay wraps up her latest movie, Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time.
