Siya says that she is a natural lyricist and enjoys writing stories. For a cut from her recent EP, What Never Happened, the Brooklyn emcee drew inspiration from her relationship with her father.
“‘Judge Me’ came about just ’cause my guy Don City who’s a super dope producer gave me the record and I fell in love with it,” she says in an exclusive DX Daily conversation with News Editor Soren Baker. “I actually did the hook first and then once I did the hook, I just felt like I should really write something that made sense to me. At that time in particular, I was going back and forth with my father who is serving life in Solano Prison out in the Bay and just having difficulties with understanding or coming to terms with what he’s going through and the fact that he was never around. Trying to build a relationship now but still having resentment towards him. It’s just something I’ve been battling with.”
Siya says that she hopes her own storytelling will give listeners someone who understands their struggles.

“People who know me and support me know that I’m very vocal when it comes to my childhood,” she says. “Writing about it is very therapeutic but also giving the fans something to relate to if they can relate to it. It doesn’t happen that much nowadays in Hip Hop with artists being relatable.”
She also gives a reason for the length of her 13-track EP.
“It was me being indecisive about what to throw on the tape and what to leave out,” she says. “So I was like, ‘Fuck it, put it all on there. The more the merrier. The fans been waiting long enough so I felt like they deserved it.”
