Will Smith starred in the 1997 film Men in Black and its 2002 and 2012 sequels, but will likely not be involved in reviving the franchise, the film’s producers said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Walter Parkes, who with wife Laurie MacDonald produced each of the Men In Black films, says “most likely no” when asked about Smith’s involvement with the franchise’s reboot.

“It will be reinvented as a trilogy,” MacDonald adds.

The process of developing the next round of Men In Black films is taking place with Sony, which released the first three films through its Columbia Pictures subsidiary. 

“We’re in the middle of it,” Parkes says. “It’s very active.”

Smith appeared in the dramatic comedy Focus, which was released in February, and stars in Concussion, a look at head trauma suffered by football players that is set for a December 25 release.

While he may not appear in the new installments of Men in Black, he is rumored to return to Bad Boys for the third and fourth installments of that franchise, which launched in 1995.
