Lil Wayne Criticizes Rappers' Similarities, Says He's Authentic In XXL Cover Story

Lil Wayne also says he's nervous about what people will think regarding "Tha Carter V."

Lil Wayne says rappers today are different from the emcees he saw when he was coming up in the industry. According to Wayne, who covers XXL's August/September issue, this helps him know he's authentic.

“I know I’m authentic because I’m 35 million years in the game," Lil Wayne says. "I don’t know where the authenticity is in the game anymore. Today everyone sounds alike, they looking alike, they acting alike, they dressing alike. I came out when everybody was super different. You had an O.D.B. You had a Busta Rhymes and then you had a Tupac. You had a Biggie. And everybody was different. Biggie was talking about Mob and Mafia shit. 2Pac was wylin’, talking about West Coast this and that. You had niggas like Meth and Red talking about how high they got and making people laugh. And then now, you got them, them. You got the categories and then everyone falls under it.”

Lil Wayne Says He's Nervous About Tha Carter V's Release

As he prepares to release Tha Carter V, Lil Wayne says he's got some jitters.

“I’m always feeling like I ain’t done shit," he says. "I’m still nervous about Tha Carter V… I’m confident about what I do, but I’m still nervous about what people think."

In the interview, Wayne also says he signed Drake because of his ability to sing and rap and that he signed Nicki because he "wanted a female" on his Young Money team.

Lil Wayne is prepping for his Tha Carter V, but he is also gearing up for his Drake Vs. Lil Wayne Tour.

Lil Wayne's XXL cover is below.

to all you cunts talking shit about wayne, just realize he worked pre damn hard to get where he is now, so he deserves all his success. Yea sure he's a shit rapper now cause of what he talks about in his songs like almost every other mainstream rapper, but he got famous because he actually put effort into making music. I mean listen to his verse on hollywood divorce by outkast, you can't say he sounds like shit in a song like that.

"just realize he worked pre damn hard to get where he is now, so he deserves all his success." if you call getting sodomized by an older man and pimped out hard work, sure

To be completely honest, I think that Lil Wayne is the last person that should be talking about authenticity. First of all out of nowhere he claimed to be a blood & that he was su wooping & I'm 100% sure that he was never no real one in the first place. Other than that I agree with everything else he said because alot of these rappers nowadays sometimes have no real identity. Lil Wayne's comment reminds me of the whole trinidad james & nyc situation. It was the right message, but the wrong messenger.

There's still variety in Hip-Hop, just not in the mainstream. And yeah, someone needs to wake Wayne up because he doesn't realize he's unoriginal and not creative.

Not original? You forget that he has a word in the dictionary? That "bling bling" era although was played out quick was created by Lil Wayne. He had everybody wearing white tees and soulja ree's. Hell when someone starts to sound like you(Young Thug although wack) then you know that you created something that SOMEONE thought was dope and wanted to follow. Now he has done his fair share of biting..it was one point where all he was trying to do was sound like Jay with the whispering rhyme patterns, etc. Lil wayne has every right to speak on the topic because him and the hot boys did bring creativity to the game in their own way. Rather is was something of substance or not. @twandthestudent

I've listened to wayne since The Carter and was a huge fan at the beginning. I still think he puts out nice tracks but it's much more infrequent. Most of the comments on here are either dickriding or hating just to fucking hate. I definitely agree though that Wayne is part of the problem. If you look at his roster they all rap about the same shit and don't have unique styles. Money, Bitches, Drugs, Cash, Money, Drugs, Hoes, etc. This is the majority of what his lyrics consist of and what he chooses to represent. I guess he thinks because he put out some bullshit rock shit that he's unique but it's not the case. Pac wasn't unique bc of 'West Coast'. He was unique because he uplifted people and brought a spotlight to a place America didn't want to look at. Wayne could have done that but sold out for the cash and followed Baby's guide to sell the most records. I hope C5 proves me wrong but I seriously doubt it after C4/IANAHB2.

This dude is the exact problem with hiphop today. No lyrical skill or delivery. not even exciting to listen to. he just relies on his celebrity status to carry him. this guy will never be considered one of the best rappers on any real hiphop heads top 10 list.

  • Anonymous

"2Pac was wylin, talking about West Coast this and that." And that's how you know when people just name drop Pac and don't listen to him

  • Bird man sucks dick

    The irony is strong here.

You weren't authentic when you were dressing the Clipse, or stealing Gillie Da Kids flow. You weren't authentic when you started claiming you were a blood as a grown man, yet have photos of you sporting blue rags as a teenager. You weren't authentic when you started dressing like a skater and created a skateboard brand, but can't even skate. GTFOH

Wayne is wrong, their are so many styles and genres in HipHop now that you have a million different sounds to listen to. Look at Mackelmore and Kemdrick who are the best selling rappers from the West right now and they have a totally different sound,
