Chuck D Criticizes Iggy Azalea, N-Word Usage

Public Enemy's Chuck D blasts the use of the n-word and shares an alleged photograph of Iggy Azalea to make a statement.

Chuck D used a photograph and caption allegedly posted by Iggy Azalea in a Twitter post about the usage of the n-word.

"a new straight path to slavery Here comes a endorsed sanctioned CORPlantation artist with A line straight out of 1853," Chuck D says in his Twitter post.

The picture accompanying this post shows Iggy Azalea next to B.o.B., Drake and T.I. Her alleged caption is "Me And Ma Nigga's <3."

When told that the photograph was altered to make it appear as if Azalea used the n-word, Chuck D explained his stance further.

"True or not the IGGY thing is a reality when you call yourself with the slaveass term that was branded on skin & today marketed, sht happens," Chuck says.

Chuck D has been against the use of the n-word. Recently, he also criticized New York radio station Hot 97 for similar reasons.

"My goal by year's end is to change the face and sound of urban radio,” Chuck said in June. "I've been in this shit 30 years, too long to just sit and let it be. I'm not going to be the grim reaper. I don't want to be the grim reaper. But people have to stand up and we need some change, and it's time...If there was a festival and it was filled with anti-Semitic slurs... or racial slurs at anyone but Black people, what do you think would happen? Why does there have to be such a double standard?”

The Chuck D posts about Azalea are as follows:

People unfortunately the n word is now like saying my homies and doesn't really adhere only to race or racism. Nowadays you call your friends the n word. Not everyone approves of course but it's wrong that black people popularized the common use of the n word (as a friendly word not as a racial slur) and then become upset when other people use it. Unfortunately we all must look at the facts there is still racism all over the world but that doesn't mean that we can slap the word racist of everyone that uses a word or says something that has a different meaning to different people. Some kids didn't grow up in racism and never truly experienced racism but use the word not because they are racist but because they grew up with black friend that use the word. In no way am I saying that people still don't use the n word as a racial slur but as Hispanic that grew up in a racially mixed neighborhood I know that the n word is used in a non racist way. We should embrace the fact that these people are innocent and don't know what the pain and suffering the word brought because the same race that suffered has forgotten it themselves and uses the word. (Not everyone of course)

"Jews are responsible for most of the wicked in the world" - Professor Griff Chuck D associated with this PE Nigga for years. Maybe he ought to clean his own house.

Chuck needs to focus on getting his own 'community' to retire the word. Most white kids these days didn't learn the word from their parents, teachers or any other role models in their 'community'. Any guesses on where they learned the casual use of the word? Well?

  • Masonrock

20 years ago, Chuck would've been right. Iggy is not "white". She's not a white American who grew up with all the racism and hatred that is so prevalent in the US. She's from Australia, where they have been much more open and accepting for a very long time. As a white female in Hip-Hop she has more of a right to say it than most do. To be honest though, the issue isn't her, it's us. We as Americans continue to talk about race and make it an issue. Look around the world, no one cares what color any of their countrymen are. They just care that they are from their country. That's all that matters. And it was no where more apparent than at the World Cup. We continue to focus on what color someone is instead of worrying about who they are and what they stand for. The longer we continue to talk about race (both good and bad) the longer it will continue to be an issue.

    • Imperial Shalom

You obviously have no clue about the history of Australia. They are as racist as if not more than the United States. If you have an opinion that's fine but make sure it's an opinion based on facts!

    • anonymous

She may not have grown up with the racism prevalent in the US but who are you to say that Australia has been more accepting and open when Australia so 'openly' disregard the indigenous people of their country (aboriginals) if anything she has grown up in a country with racism, just towards a different race, but that doesn't make it any less of an issue. Iggy Azalea is white, and you can't deny that she is entitled to a privilege many people are denied because they are not. Just because she is a rapper it does not entitle her to use the 'n' word and especially because she is white. It is a racist and derogatory term, that once upon a time was used by white people to humiliate and demean black people, it is not slang specifically for rappers to use. There are race problems and there will continue to be but just trying to stop talking about race altogether completely disregards the years of struggle that many went through because of their race and it is insensitive and ignorant to state that 'no one cares what colour the country men are' because a lot of people do. Just because you don't see it happen, does not mean it doesn't still happen.

first off, this iggy post was obviously not real. also, even if it was real, you might take offense to her using that word, and i totally understand that and shit, but saying that a white woman desperately wanting to be black (or, you know, part of the black american culture) is a new path to slavery is seriously just dumb. y'all remember that scene in the malcom x movie by spike lee where malcom conched his hair to make himself look more european? well, these days white people are getting a metaphorical conch. BLACK PEOPLE WON. BLACK CULTURE HAS OFFICIALLY TAKEN OVER AMERICA AND ALL Y'ALL DO IS BITCH AND MOAN ABOUT IT.

  • Agree

I agree with Chuck, 100% with everything he says. It's time we start kicking out these racist white people and ignorant black imbeciles like chief Keef and Trinidad James. It's time to clean Hip Hop and destroy the non-talent. Iggy is fake and she's a wigga 100%. She could never make it in Australia or Europe she can only sell her cd's to the brainwashed MTV children. No grown ass man or young man in general is going to buy her cd. Fancy?? Fuck outta here

Look, y'all don't listen to this old grumpy man. He's just mad that rap is artistically in a greater place than it was 30 years ago; it's at it's peak. There's always some salty old buzzard who's still living in the past that complains about the state of rap or rappers in general. And before you get all in my grill, yes, I'm aware of who UpChuck D is. I'm 44 years old and listened to Pubic Enemy when I was younger and before I became Rick Ross' agent. Yes, I said Upchuck. He officially makes me sick with all his bitching and complaining as of late. My point is, while I do thank him for all that he has done for hip hop and making moves politically and freeing us from the shackles of mental enslavement that the industry has us trapped within, UpChuck should just shut the hell up. Emcees today are rather misunderstood. When rappers are "bragging" about their cars or their jewelry, keep in mind that that they're actually dissing flashy material possessions and making us aware of the diamond conflict in South Africa. And money and bitches? They're actually code words for the dangers of capitalism and anti misogyny. Finally, lets not forget the word nigga. Nigga is a term of endearment and represents the admonishment of the slave term Nigg*r .

Leave it to an old man like Chuck D to think everything he sees on the internet is true. he's trying to tarnish someones reputation to get his view points across and pander to his audience. Isn't that what Fox News and CNN does? Look in the mirror Chuck, are you doing more harm or good? Or maybe Twitter and the internet just isn't your thing because your attitude and general point of view on racism is out of date, just like your music.

The post was a fake, and when Chuck finds out what does he do? he basically says, "it doesn't matter if it's fake, it happens anyway". Where's the apology? If a white person offers a black person a piece of watermelon their labeled racist and their life is altered, but Chuck can go on an ignorant rant without checking his facts and doesn't have to own up to it...weaksauce. Most overrated rapper in history...Chuck D is a shitty rapper with a decent voice and a hypeman that's as popular as he is for wearing a big clock around his neck. He's only popular cuz he preached to the black community about how they're victims and they ate it up

Whether you agree or disagree with what he's saying, to discount his credibility or his opinions because he's 'old' (which is what, 50?) is incredibly ignorant and lazy. If you value an 18 year old's opinion over a Man who's been through it and back then you're a dumb motherfucker. This whole idea that once you're over 30 years old you no longer matter in Hip-Hop is wack. Go 'head and keep listening to these young fools tellin you to pop mollies, fuck every bitch in sight, and drink that purple shit. See where it gets you.

Why do so many rappers talk about fucking? Men are the hunters and the gatherers of the human race. As such, it is necessary to speak on topics such as sex in order to encourage people that there are certain things we as men must do in order to populate the planet, sew our oats in every field possible, and show our potential mates that we're capable of holding our own and can provide for our household as men and stability for our family.

    • Anonymous

Oh ya, because young rappers only talk about mollies and fucking bitches. There's a pretty popular rapper out nowadays that goes by Kendrick Lamar who is opposed to the mollie culture. He has sold 1 or 2 albums in the last year or so... Chuck D's statements need to be disregarded because they are based on an internet hoax. It's funny because he is old (aka not from the "internet generation")and believes everything he reads on the internet without using critical thinking skills to determine the validity of it. I'm sure there's a Nigerian Prince somewhere out there who owes Chuck a million dollars. Ignorance rules everything around me...

"Sales of all those genres have decreases. In the last year alone black music sales have decreased 17%, faster than any other genre" We are in a recession and the people outside our communities are no longer supporting our artists they are supporting Iggy, Eminem, Mac Miller, Riff Raff and Mackelmore and on the R&B side they are supporting Justin Timberlae, Robin Thicke and other white artists. Some lord jamar shi.. And some hiphopdx news postings choice. Ya'll think its alright to openly put out there fuck whites basiclly. Fuck whites in the game, fuck whites on promotion, fuck whites that buy the albums? How about this: FUCK ALL YA'LL RACISTS. Regardless of what color you are. Fucking back peddling with ya'll's struggle. Was'nt it a black thing 20 years ago, to kill stereotypes, and racism? Now here we are Black President and all. And you dumb ass's still fueling the hate. But as for Iggy, shes using the word trying to prove shes in the inner crowd. On real, What's wrong with whites in rap? Don't get insecure, we aint no better than anyone else. We all aint White Power Skinheads that's gonna kill your Genere. Were are all a product of our environments, and enjoy whatever music we choose, like anyone else. Unfortunately everyone struggles and not only blacks have hardships. So NOW more than ever, we can all relate to what Hip Hop is. And feel the truth in the message, because were there too, were in the ghetto too, were in these prisons too, were getting stereotyped, all that shit. But if your getting insecure, up your game! Don't play the race card. It's fuckin 2014 that shit's irrelevant. BTW,, I am White i do rap. How many times you think ive been stereotyped, by whites and blacks ALIKE? • TN

Well my post was not about race so much. CHuck has not mentioned race. Chuck is talking about a devaluing of his culture. What he knew as hip hop is dying. As long as there are people living in particular conditions then hip hop should not devalue itself. I think people who are referring to race as the main point of their argument are missing the point entirely.

  • TN

I think people are getting confused here. I think hip hoppers need to wake up. There is smoke in the kitchen the fire is on its way. These incidents popping up in hip hop are warning signs of what corporations have in store for hip hop. This is not so much a colour issue but a power issue. It appears that someone or something is trying to gain a control of hiphop. It started with getting poor hip hop artists to sell their souls for money and not power. They were given advances but no real control or education of how to get control of themselves in the industry. Exceptions Wu tang. In turn rappers old out their integrity by disrespecting each other and the art. Well the tipping point is here for hip hop. I wish other artists would follow the lead of people like Chuck, Lord Jamar and others who have been vocal this year. I may not agree with everything they say but they all realise that hip hop is losing its essence and essentially just becoming a pop art form. Pop means popular which means corporations are trying to devalue hip hop taking away its ability for social cohesion and mobility. I don't think Chuck has anything against Iggy personally but he s just pointing out whats going on.

Blacks are subhuman animals who abandon their children, live off welfare and murder each other by the dozen over crack, chicken, watermelon and tennis shoes. The Black race is less intelligent and more savage which is why Africa is a shithole. I only listen to rap music because I enjoy hearing Ni88ers rhyme about killing themselves and calling their women whores and bitches. My favorite song right now is "My Ni88er" by Young GangMember.

    • Ben

And in response to the anonymous reply, what you just typed is just as much of the problem as what the OP posted. We need to elevate our thinking and get rid of the hate. Fighting hate with more hate doesn't benefit anyone.

    • Ben

I know you're just a troll, but what you're saying is really terrible. You should do some soul searching so you can realize that putting something online to get a reaction out of people does not better your existence in any way. I lived in Tanzania briefly and can tell you that Africa is far from a shithole... It's actually the most beautiful place I have ever been, mostly due to the people and culture. Racism is not dead, it will probably always exist in some shape or form. Its our job to teach our kids that racism towards any race is NOT okay! Society as a whole needs to recognize that racism can exist towards any race, but that racism towards the black culture is different. Blacks never denied the whites their basic rights in America. There are so many young whites slinging around the n-word because they don't realize the hateful history behind it. I hate hearing white people that claim their use of the word is justified because they might have one black friend that doesn't say anything when they use the word. Or think that its okay because they say it to mean "brother or good friend". Its not okay. Not a racist? Still not okay. Don't understand why? That's because you aren't black.

Its our own fault Izzy, Macklemore, Justin and Robin and running (or in the running) for all the top slots in urban music: 1.We dont buy, we bootleg. Why would a label push an artist who will be bootlegged anyway? 2.We throw our good artist away. Unlike other genres who just support good music, we only support what is hot. Even if Jadakiss releases that classic album, not one will buy it because he is from NY and hes a 90s artist. Toni Braxton still sounds and looks good. We dont care. But let U2 or someone like that come out with something good. Will sell, even though they are in their 50s. 3.We still have that crab in a bucket mentality, we still will hate on anyone who has more than us. 50, Jay-Z, Diddy, etc. An 95% has nothing to do with music. 4.Black people hate creativity and experimentation. We are so judgmental, that anything outside of our box we have created, is met with scorn and ridicule 5.Old schoolers are haters. Anything that comes out is wack and never as good as the 90s when we forget that there were wack rappers and corny songs from our era as well. 6.World is different for youngsters. They dont have as much animus toward other cultures as we do or did. They are much more accepting. So when a white rappers says the N word, or John Legend deals with only white people, they dont see a problem with that. 7.Ignorance won. They have tricked the world (blacks in particular) into believing that it is not them, it is the intelligent, creative and enlightened who are out of step.

    • Anonymous

Your responses sound ignorant, and nave. Sales of all those genres have decreases. In the last year alone black music sales have decreased 17%, faster than any other genre 360 deals are the new standard because labels arent making money off album sale anymore because of bootlegging. Wu-Tang and Outkast get love, but would struggle to even go multi plat with good material. An established white artist puts out a classic, and they will blow up. Yes some of us have a crab in the bucket mentality but you can chalk a lot of that up to Willie Lynch but a lot of brothers in the industry are sincere about community and brotherhood. Creative black people are not celebrated as much as the ignorant Old schoolers are pioneers and the fathers of the culture, they have earned the right to critique the culture. Agreed. Im just saying have perspective White people have earned the right to use the N word ? Stupid Ignorance has won in the mainstream. Check BET and the radio.

    • Anonymous

Your blanket statements sound ignorant. Not everybody bootlegs, who do you think is buying all those Gospel, Neo-Soul and Blues albums? Do you honestly think these albino colored people are going out buying K Michelle and Tank albums? Labels will push an artist regardless of if they ate bootlegged or not which is why the 360 deals are the new industry standard. There are plenty washed up artists from other genres who get zero support from fans, our genre is relatively young compared to others so we don't have many 50 year old rappers like your U2 singers but our Wu Tang still gets love around the globe as well as OutKast. Yes some of us have a crab in the bucket mentality but you can chalk a lot of that up to Willie Lynch but a lot of brothers in the industry are sincere about community and brotherhood. Black people are the most experimental and creative people on the planet, we can create an entire culture based on scratching records, spinning on our heads using brick walls for paint canvases and taking spoken word poetry to new levels of rhyme. Only a fool would think otherwise. Old schoolers are pioneers and the fathers of the culture, they have earned the right to critique the culture. White people have earned the right to use the word N*gger with the blood of MLK and the near destruction of an entire race of people, bloodshed and brutality have given them the right to use a denigrating word to taunt their natural enemy. Ignorance will never win and Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone.
