50 Cent Questions Jay Z & UGK's "Big Pimpin'"

50 Cent addresses Jay Z's past retirement, says he sold 23 million records while the Brooklyn rapper was retired.

Among the topics discussed during G-Unit helmsman 50 Cent’s Sirius XM Town Hall event yesterday (March 17) was fellow rapper Jay Z’s multi-year retirement. The Brooklyn wordsmith began his retirement in 2003 shortly after the release of The Black Album and officially made his return to music in 2006 with Kingdom Come.

According to AllHipHop.com, during 50 Cent’s conversation with Sirius XM, he revealed that he sold well over 20 million records during Jay Z’s retirement.

“Where was Jay Z from 2003 to 2006? I sold 23 million records from 2003 to 2006,” 50 Cent said. “He stopped making music. He said ‘I quit. We’ll get back to what we got later. I quit. Timeout. I’ll come back to play later.’ When he signed that Beyonce contract he was like ‘men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.’”

The Queens rapper also questioned the timing of the 2001 release of “Big Pimpin’,” a collaboration between Jay Z and the Port Arthur, Texas-based group UGK. Years prior to the release of the Timbaland-produced “Big Pimpin’,” 50 Cent appeared alongside UGK on the 1998 record, “As The World Turns.”

“After I had got shot Jay did ‘Big Pimpin” with UGK. I don’t know where he got the idea from,” he said.

During an interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club last year, UGK emcee Bun B revealed that 50 Cent was the first New York artist to ask UGK to appear on a project while artists like Keith Murray and Lord Jamar were the first to embrace the group.

"No, that would probably be 50," Bun B said while speaking to The Breakfast Club last November. "Let me not say that. 50 was the first artist that called like 'We want you on a project.' The first artist to embrace UGK is either going to be, like, Keith Murray or Lord Jamar, probably gonna be the first two people that we rocked with. That's how we all ended up on the Don't Be A Menace soundtrack, because those were all our friends in New York. We met Keith Murray at the label because he was on Jive Records.”

50 Cent’s Sirius XM Town Hall conversation can be heard in its entirety beginning on March 31 on the Sirius XM website.

Jay-Z is a better rapper, yes, but to say that 50 cent cannot rival Jay-Z list of accomplishments is just dumb.

i dont look for longevity i look for good music which usually comes from an artists or bands first few projects.

With all the said 50 Cent fell off and now only a hand full of followers are checking for him. He sold a shit load of records no one can deny that. But with the Ja Rule beef, Dre and Em cosign, and on every music staion doing interviews it was destined to happen. Longevity is what most fans look for

    • Anonymous

Son...50 isn't rivaling shit. Majority of his sales are off two albums, then the rest of his catalogue is trash. You just gonna ignore the quality of the work? Not to mention who stayed relevant for a longer period of time? Fuck out of here

50 did good with the Eminem hype behind him but that wore off and he became just another rapper who the public got bored with and moved on from.

I dont care if that monkey sold 10 bags or 10,000 Bricks just as long as he helped contribute to the destruction of his people and his community. I support all Blacks selling narcotics to other Blacks. They're animals anyway let them lose their souls.

In 2006 I bought a $120 G-Unit jean jacket, I used to get compliments on it all the time.. Loved that thing, kept it perfectly intact.. Last year, I threw it in a bag of clothes and brought it to the Good Will.. because I felt embarrassed to wear it. That's when you know G-unit ain't sh*t anymore lol.

  • TruthHurts

If Curtis were to put as much energy into making a song as he does putting down other artists, he might actually have a hit song by now. The universe sends back to you what you put out. He built his career off of insults and disrespect and now he's seeing it all splash back in his face. The G-Unit Empire has crumbled homie. It's either time to reinvent yourself as an artist or drop off completely because whatever you've been doing the last few years isn't working.

Damn. The nigga comes off as bitter and insecure. Jay has him beat in damn near every category: bars, consistency and body of work, cultural significance, accolades, and business acumen and financial success. Jay is also widely considered to be top 5 DOA. Some people even believe he is the greatest rapper of all time. Whether or not anyone here agrees, or disagrees, is besides the point. The fact that many believe that he is speaks volumes about Jay's place among hiphop's all time greats. I don't think too many people rank 50 top 10 let alone top 5 DOA. Anyway, I think 50 should just walk away from making music. He's an irrelevant rapper who produces boring music that no one seems to care about anymore.

    • kc

Couldn't have said it any better my self ^ 50 sounds like a woman talking about this nonsense like someone cares. He sold a bunch of record while jay was retired so what! Is saying he can't sell records now because of jay-z??? That Jay-z is as big as he is because of one song with UGK? really1? Once 50 told his story on his first album he had absoultely nothing to talk about. Since then every 50 song has been the same just with a different beat. I got guns, money and bitches over and over and over. Dude you came in and sold a bunch of records and got rich. Suck it up and make better and more well rounded music or just shut up. In the rap game it's never gonna be your decision when your time is up. People are done with your limited music, just accept it...

  • DownSoufHustler

R.i.p Pimp C. So many people in the game speak of Bun & Pimp when they talk about the Real! They don't have to yell they real 100 times, other folks say it for them, that says a lot. Okay so 50 cent had 5 album/soundtrack/compilation records that went platinum or better. He talks about doing something in a 3 year period while somebody was gone(actually jay-z never left) he did drop the black album in 03 and had platinum mash up albums with Linkin Park and R.kelly(while he was settling down). And speaking of platinum records Jay-z went platinum or better on 15 seperate occassions. 15 to 50 cents 5. Jay-z is the 3rd highest selling rapper of all time behind Eminem and 2pac. More number 1 albums then Elvis. So what is 50 cent trying to say? Surely this foo don't think his legacy and list of accomplishments can rival Jay-z's.

    • Anonymous

The reason why i didnt count rihanna or kanye is because rihannas fame didnt come from jay z, he was CEO of def jam at the time and alot of people had allready told him that she had star quality, i only included people who jay-z or 50 cent put their names out on, people who nobody knew about that had their promototional singles that featured either 50 or jay. Pretty much people that only got famous because they were cosigned by one of these two. thats also the reason why i chose to only count their first albums, because after that, their albums cant be counted as a part of jays or 50s accomplishments anymore. and i didnt include kanye because he had allready produced for foxy brown, carl thomas, nas, harlem world, eminem, raekwon and mase before jay found him. and he only got to do an album after he produced hits for jay z, and after that DAME DASH signed kanye, who, just as rihanna, didnt need jay z to be on the singles to promote their albums. But sure Kanyes first album: 4 million worldwide Rihannas first album: 1 million Jayz total 47 50 total 39 so still in the same weight class. and yes jay-z has proven to survive the test of time, but look at what 50 did in a period of only 4 years, its pretty amazing how those 4 years can be compared to JAY-Z WHOLE CAREER, and as i said: 50 got 3 number 1 songs on billboard hot 100 (with only one feature, nate dogg, allthough 50 wrote the hook for him) and a total of 9 top 10 songs on the same chart(2 more with no features, total of 4 nonfeatured) Jay-Z got 1 number one (which featured alicia keys) and a total of 11 top 10 songs(4 of them had no features), plus one with watch the throne 50 cent got one number one feature, and 5 top 10s (1 with a singer) Jay-Z got 3 number 1 features (all with singers), and 9 top 10s (8 with singers) Get rich or die tryin' sold more than Jay-Zs 4 highest selling albums combined Jay-Z only got one album outselling 50s second album, and that is with a margin of 13 000 50 cent got an average 5.5 million sold per album Jay-Z got an average of 2.3 million sold per album If you combine the sales of ALL jay-z albums since get rich or die tryin' was released, Get rich or die tryin' still sold more

50 was hot for 4 years, JayZ been hot for 17 years. Any artist like Nelly, or Ja Rule can come through and have a few hot years but the real artists like JayZ are still standing while artists like 50 Cent can't even attract talent to their label or make a hit song. Once the hype wears off you get to see what an artist is truly made of.

Thats that crab shit that 50 specializes in, he likes to tear other Black men down and try to minimize their achievements to make his own achievements seem somehow more valuable. All B.S. aside look at what JaYz has done for J. Cole, passing the torch to the next generation to keep the culture alive, Diddy puttin French on, Jeezy puttin YG on, T.I. puttin B.O.B on, Ross puttin Meek on, Dre puttin Kendrick on, and so on and so on. 50Cent has no business speaking on a BOSS like JayZ.

what the man is implying, because of other conversations, is that: Jay is a well known biter how so? if you were around then, you knew 50 was coming because you heard the music, is it far fetched that Jay, Dame, or Bleek listened to 50's song & said "let's get them for..."? no but if you never heard of UGK before Jay's song, nor 50 before Shady, or hate 50 and love Jay because of money, you won't be able to function within this conversation

So what if Jay got UGK after 50 did a song with them?...The point is that Big Pimpin' was made by Jay, and it sounds great. Sorry that everybody remembers that Jay and UGK song and not the 50 Cent and UGK song.

It's this sort of in-fighting which is why New York artists arent able to hit the same level as southern rappers anymore. It was like a small gap. Bleek, Beans. Everybody was in there. I was like, Man, Im telling you, man. Yall better..yall betteryall got a change right now. Just flood it. I like 50 as an artist, but he spends waaaaay too much time worrying about the next dude. He spends too much time social media b*tching, comparing records sales and crying. Just put your music out already!

Jay always does stuff like this if you look back. He sits back and watches whats going on and pays attention to everything and goes away for a bit then makes a comeback at the right time. His sneaky and very clever. Look back at his career and your see some patterns.

When Hov starts spitting niggaz get so religious like 50 is doing right now..lol. No rapper is on Jiggaz level and they know that becoz the only time they excited is when they mention the name Sean Carter the Jay Z!

    • We Don't Believe You

Jay released an album every 4th quarter for 10 year straight. The only time he did take a break was after the black album and on the album he said he was taking a break. Look what you made me do, look what I made for you Knew if I paid my dues, how will they pay you When you first come in the game they try to play you Then you drop a couple of hits; look how they wave to you From Marcy to Madison Square To the only thing that matters in just a matter of years As fate would have it, Jay's status appears To be at an all-time high, perfect time to say goodbye When I come back like Jordan, wearing the 4-5 It ain't to play games with you, it's to aim at you, probably maim you If I owe you I'm blowin' you to smithereens Cocksucker, take one for your team And I need you to remember one thing, I came, I saw, I conquered From record sales to sold out concerts So motherfucker if you want this encore I need you to scream til your lungs get sore So this here is the victory lap Then I'm leavin', that's how you get me back After a year of them 16's it's 1.2 And that's 2.4, and I'm only doin' two You wanted to gain attention new dudes I can get you BET - and TRL, too You want to be in the public, send your budget Well fuck it, I ain't budgin' Young did it to death, you gotta love it Record companies told me I couldn't cut it Now look at me: all star-studded Golfer above par like I putted All cause the shit I uttered was utterly ridiculous How sick is this You want to bang, send Kanye change, send Just some dust Send Hip a grip, then you gotta spit A little somethin' like this Encore...

During his interview with The Breakfast Club back in July of last year, Jay spoke on predicting the 50 Cent takeover of 2003-2006 and warning his own Roc-A-Fella artists around September of 2002: "I remember one time walking in the studio. It was like a small gap. Bleek, Beans. Everybody was in there. I was like, Man, Im telling you, man. Yall better.. yall better... yall got a change right now. Just flood it. Put out a lot of music, because 50 Cent is coming. You know, four months later, In Da Club hit."
