Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 3/2/2014

The official first week numbers are in for ScHoolboy Q's "Oxymoron" and Kid Cudi's "SATELLITE FLIGHT: The journey to Mother Moon."

Two of the year's most anticipated Rap projects, ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron and Kid Cudi's SATELLITE FLIGHT: The journey to Mother Moonmake their chart debuts this week on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. Meanwhile, Eminem continues to make waves on the chart with his 2013 album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2

ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron Is #1

ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron is this week's highest debut on the chart. The TDE/Aftermath Entertainment project sold 138,950 copies this week to earn the #1 spot on the chart. Oxymoron, which can be streamed here, is ScHoolboy Q's major label debut album, a project that earned the Top Dawg emcee a 3.5 out of 5 in the collection's HipHopDX review. "In many ways, Oxymoron delivers exactly as advertised," HipHopDX said of the album in its review. "It’s an ominous project that also needs a few radio reaches to provide ScHoolboy Q a platform to achieve mainstream success. You want a guy like Q to bring home a gold or platinum plaque, but will you endure the strategic placement of some Top 40 bait to see it happen?"

Kid Cudi's SATELLITE FLIGHT: The journey to Mother Moon Arrives At #4

Kid Cudi's SATELLITE FLIGHT: The journey to Mother Moonwhich arrives at #4, is the week's second-highest rated debut on the chart. The album sold 87,122 copies in its first week. SATELLITE FLIGHT, which can be streamed here, is Cudi's most recent effort, which earned the rapper-singer a 4 out of 5 in the album's HipHopDX review. "Flaws and all, SATELLITE FLIGHT: The journey to Mother Moon stands as one of Kid Cudi’s biggest accomplishments," HipHopDX says of the album. "Rejuvenated. Recreated. Rebooted. Call it what you will. Scott Mescudi made an EP’s worth of material feel like an album, and he did it without surrendering his artistic integrity in the process. If SATELLITE FLIGHT truly is a bridge between Indicud and Man on the Moon III, fans will be in for a treat when the third installment is finally released."

Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 Remains In Top 20

Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 continues to succeed on the chart as it lands in the #17 slot, though sales for the project decreased from last week. Eminem's most recent album has sold 1,975,597 units overall. This week, the album sold 17,662 units, a 6 percent drop from last week's 18,845 units sold. In February, Eminem celebrated the 15-year anniversary of his debut album, The Slim Shady LP. At the time, Eminem's longtime manager Paul Rosenberg spoke about how he's viewed Eminem through the years. "He's always been a studio rat," Paul Rosenberg said at the time. "He goes hours at a clip without leaving the booth. When he's determined and on a creative spark, there's nothing else he's focused on. That's been the same since day one."

i dont care what anyone says, 150k first week is amazing for a fake ass nigga from the burbs who used to lock criminals up for a living

  • Anonymous

"how sad will it be to only push 160k first week after 8 full days" 139 is sadder.

    • Anonymous

Mastermind had no singles on the top 100. Sbq did. And he suffered a %80 drop. Kid Cudi did worse though.

LOL maybe, haha i just heard someone say that so i thought it was true

"Q started rapping in 2010 and is now selling more than most new rappers out" So Q was able to release the "ScHoolboy Turned Hustla" mixtape in 2008 and the "Gangsta & Soul" mixtape in 2009 before he actually started rapping?

    • Anonymous

For a artist that is supported by nearly ever other rapper and the entire industry and constantly shoved in out faces you would expect more than 160k. Bottom line the majority of people in the world don't like this guy or respect him. They may download his music but they ain't gonna give him their hard earned money when all he does is lie and talk about being rich and if your not your wack.

    • Anonymous

Ross is an industry vet on his 6th major label effort with Jay-Z, Diddy, Lil Wayne and Kanye West all on the album to name a few of his big name features. Q started rapping in 2010 and is now selling more than most new rappers out.

    • Anonymous

No, it ain't. That's good for a major label debut with no radio singles and half of the hype as Mastermind.

  • Anonymous

He will outsell him in the long hall. He got singles for days! Not to mention outselling Ross worldwide in every country but the US. Throw in a platinum single before the release and he's good! No, we no.1 everywhere except a few irrelevant european countries.

Who will reach double platinum first? Ken Doll or Mackerel?

On a side note..... No way should Q's album have a higher metacritic then MMLP2 or Born Sinner. It was more along the lines of Watching Movies....

    • Andre.CO

Watching Movies With the Sound Off was definitely the best thing Mac has released, IMO. But I wouldn't say it was better then MMLP2 or Born Sinner. Mac's lyrics aren't good enough to be better then basically anything Em does.

    • Anonymous

Watching Movies was the best of all the albums you listed.

140K is like 275-300K 10 years ago. Those are pretty good numbers. It will hit Gold in the long run, and who knows??? Perhaps one of his songs will pick up steam. Macklemore did like 80K first week, and has gone to sell over 1 million because he had songs that caught on a month or two after the release. The album it self was pretty alright. I enjoyed about 2/3 the album. Q isn't anywhere near Kendrick, and lyrically isn't anything too special, but he's got an ear for production, and some songs shine. I'd give it like a 6-7/10. But 140K is very good, especially when he didn't really have any songs that charted higher then like 80-90 on the Hot 100. Meanwhile Big Sean who everyone and their brother had heard of didn't surpass 100K in either of his albums.

  • DJboutit

I do not care what era it is 140k is a flop sorry. Back in the 80s and 90s anything under 600k sales was considered a flop I would say under 450k is a flop. Only way it would not be a flop is if your a underground artist only selling in small 120 to 150 mile area. 140k = L O L

    • DJboutit

There are aritst that need no promotion what so every and they will do 500k in there sleep. There also underground artist with a label that does not promote for shit and they still can do 70k to 125k. A artist on a big label can not do 300k+ LOL. If you artist with a big label and do drop 2 albums and total sales of both albums for not = 450k your career is over

    • Anonymous

      Times have changed, buddy.

People are so stupid that it makes you laugh, I heard one kid say that Ross released his CD 24 hours early to "pad his stats" LMFAO. Not because the album got leaked and bootlegged like crazy but because 24 hours can somehow "pad" your numbers.

  • Anonymous

Who will take the top spot net week? Fucking duh. The mastermind.

  • DEEEEEEEEEEBBLOOOOOCCKKKKKKKKKK

Kid Cudi sold nearly 90 thousand with no promotion nigga didn't even have a release date just dropped 10 tracks n said there ya go on twitter. Cant front that's unheard of and I aint even a fan only track of his I could name is Day n Night

  • Anonymous

Pharrell will be steady selling for months and months I'm sure as he probably has an album full of hit singles on there. Ross will likely be off the charts after 1 month or 6 weeks. None of these rap niggas still selling like Kendrick and Macklemore though, their albums came out in 2012 and stay putting up numbers EVERY SINGLE WEEK.

  • Anonymous

Q is not pop, he's hip-hop. Hip-hop is still selling with Jay Z, Eminem, Kendrick, Macklemore, etc. Wayne, Drake, and Nicki are pop, not hip-hop. Pharrell didn't need help pushing the single while Ross' official singles bombed. Take wayne and drake at least off your statement and you are right.

  • No Kilo's .....NONE

If u got the ross cd in ur hand this week remember this is a guy who was paid by the state to check niggas assholes for drugs and snitch on everything the inmates did in prison and he was such a good snitch n asshole inspector he got an award that's where the photo of him in his C.O uniform came from

  • Anonymous

Damn low numbers for pharrell. I was hoping he would do at least 200k.

  • Anonymous

    1. Damn, those numbers suck for Ross. 2. J Cole and Schoolboy Q are not pop, they're hip-hop. 3. GFID was released 2 years ago, so you can't use that excuse anymore. 1. 50 had a much steeper drop between each album 2. J Cole worked with miguel, and his beats soun pop. Q worked with pop star kendrick and his music's pop. 3. Album sales hae declined from 2012 to 2013.

    • Anonymous

"1. 50 had a much steeper drop between each album" That has nothing to do with Ross experiencing a decline in sales. "2. J Cole worked with miguel, and his beats soun pop. Q worked with pop star kendrick and his music's pop." Miguel's an R&B artist, Cole's music is not pop and doesn't sound pop, and Kendrick's not a pop artist, he's a hip-hop artist. "3. Album sales hae declined from 2012 to 2013." Still no excuse for low album sales.

  • Anonymous

kinda wack I thought it would atleast do 230k

  • Anonymous

Thats kind of bad considering he released it 1 day early to pad them first week numbers.... less than 200k is not very boss like!! Remember that Wale sold 158k first week! So Ross should be doing at least 50k more than him. He will still be going gold like usual.

  • Anonymous

Looks like Ross will get the number 1 album next week in the US while Pharrell gets it in every other country but his single will probably go 2x or 3x plat.

GOT DAMNN THAT NIGGA BARELY SELLING MORE THAN SCHOOLBOY, HE BETTER GET SOME SKINNY JEANS OR A SKIRT FOR NEXT TIME CAUSE HIS GIMMICK IS UP.

    • Anonymous

Still finding ways to trash rick ross eh. J Cole is pop and pop sells more. You would have to compare j cole to drake and Drake sold far more. Also, album sales have declined since then so rick ross will sell less of course.

    • Anonymous

At least 60k less than his last effort, Maybe he really did peak at GFID. He's going to sell half of what J Cole did first week. Thats harsh.

    • Anonymous

FUCK!!! WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP SUPPORTING THIS COP?!!! I KNOW OTHERS WILL TRY AND BRING THIS DOWN BUT THIS IS SADLY A GOOD TOTAL FOR ROSS!! PHARRELL SHOULD HAVE WON!!! IM HOPING 50 OUTSELLS THIS!!

Q is pop and hiphop doesn't sell as much as pop anymore unless its wayne, drake, or Nicki. Also, Pharrell needed a movie to help push that single while Ross's singles are promo.

ross barely going to sell more than Q first week and Pharrell got a platinum single, ross doesn't even have a single on the charts.

You're just making up lies because Mastermind has more negative reviews than GRODT and MMLP2. Still dickriding 50's hard cock I see? Ross ended that fool's career.

    • Anonymous

Ross has always been bigger than 50 if we're talking about circumference. As far as fame goes, 50 still a household name and an international superstar. Ross is just another rapper.

    • Anonymous

Ross is literally bigger than 50 right now.

    • Anonymous

All the money you make off sales independently goes to you unlike a major label who'll take a huge chunk of that money and give you like 15%. Ross' Ls are bigger than his Ws.

    • Anonymous

Independent doesn't allow you to sell as much records though. Ross has taken a huge amount of W's.

    • Anonymous

"How is it an upgrade? Other than being able to get an album out, thats not a good deal. How do you know ross is losing?" Being independent is a good deal since you don't have to answer to a major label and you're your own boss. Ross has taken massive numbers of Ls.

    • Anonymous

Why are you faggots on here talking about 2 niggas who didn't sell any record last week? They are both irrelevant to this article!

How is it an upgrade? Other than being able to get an album out, thats not a good deal. How do you know ross is losing?

I didn't know Drake was going to sell 1.5 million units this fast. He only has to give Cash Money one more album and then he's going to Roc Nation. J Cole will be producing and Drake will be rapping and singing ill hooks.

And it has nothing to do with Chainz, who can't even get a hit single for himself and has to team up with another artist. 2 Chainz has the single, I'm Different. Also, Derulo isn't a big artist and fell off since his first album. Derulo was the one that needed the hit.

    • Anonymous

Good to see a non-pop album do well even if its got a little extra hype due to Kendrick and GKMC. Fans LOVE collectives and if they Love the leader they will support the bench players so you might be a U God, a ASAP Ant, a Domo Genesis, or a Drag-On but you still will get some shared spotlight and attention if you are on the team.

dis nigga said YMCMB got a farm team and a bunch of bench warmers

    • Anonymous

Yet YMCMB's music sucks dick while TDE is putting out quality material. YM has way too many artists and only 3 of them achieve any success while the rest are just tax write-offs. TDE only has 6 artists, which is easier to manage and develop since it's possible for every TDE artist to establish themselves unlike every YMCMB artist.

    • Johnny Blayze

YMCMB as a label is far strong and greater than TDE. No comparison there. Record sales, concert revenue, endorsements, side business not even close. Yes YMCMB has more artists, they have more of a sports team mentality. Get people in, their in the farm team, some make it as bench players and others are super stars who dominate the game. Far more developed and sustainable model.

you sound like an idiot! 2 chainz had just as much promo but his singles all sucked and no one cared this time. no one expected q to reach kendrick's sales.

Yeah but 2 chainz latest album had little promotion while schoolboy q had tons of promo from tde itself and still failed to reach k dot. Its not 2 chainz thats falling off, talk dirty (which did not have drake) went no.3.

yeah but 2 chainz went from selling 147k first week (huge singles with Drake and Kanye) on his debut to 63k first week on his second album so who really lost? Q went from selling 3900 first week digitally last album to 139k on Oxymoron! Q is getting bigger while 2 Chainz slowly falls off.

It is a huge flop considering k dot gave him tons of hype yet can't outsell 2 chainz debut.
