Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 1/27/2014

2014 Grammy Nominees take over the #2 spot while Ty Dolla $ign's "Beach House EP" and Step Brothers' "Lord Steppington" releases open in the Top 100.

This week, Grammy nominees took over the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis saw an increase in album sales and Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z found themselves jumping a few spots on the chart. Meanwhile Ty Dolla $ign's Beach House EP and Step Brothers' Lord Steppington debuted in the Top 60.

2014 Grammy Nominees Album Debuts At #2

The 2014 Grammy Nominees album opes up this week in the #2 spot with 59,561 albums sold overall. The album boasts a star-studded line-up filled with Grammy nominees, including Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar, T.I., Pharrell and Jay Z, among others. T.I. and Pharrell appear as Robin Thicke's guests on "Blurred Lines." Pharrell also appears on Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." Kendrick Lamar appears on the album with "Swimming Pools (Drank)" and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis team up with Mary Lambert on the album for their "Same Love" collaboration. Of these artists, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had the biggest increase in album sales from last week to this week. Their album The Heist had a 38 percent increase in sales from 13,116 albums sold last week to 18,090 units moved this week. The Heist also went from #24 on the charts last week to #14 on the charts this week. Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d. city saw a 0 percent increase in sales, though the album jumped from #55 to #33. Jay Z witnessed a 5 percent decrease in sales and his Magna Carta...Holy Grail fell from #82 to #92.

Ty Dolla $ign's Beach House EP Debuts At #51

Ty Dolla $ign's Beach House EP, released through Atlantic Records, debuted on the charts this week. The EP landed at #51 with 6,127 units sold. HipHopDX gave Beach House EP a 4 out of 5 X rating in a recent review of the project. "From mic to plug, Beach House EP triumphantly strikes the same note," HipHopDX said of the EP. "The Los Angeles-native is a talented songwriter even while essentially re-writing the same song, which is a complicated square to dance in without two-stepping too close to redundancy. Remaining interesting without contextual diversity is tricky. Fortunately, Ty Dolla $ign doesn't have those problems."

Step Brothers' Lord Steppington Debuts In Top 60

Alchemist and Evidence teamed up as Step Brothers for their Lord Steppington album, which debuted this week on the charts at #60. The duo's Rhymesayers Entertainment album opened up by selling 5,357 copies after its first week of availability. Lord Steppington earned a 4 out of 5 X rating on HipHopDX recently. Evidence spoke about how this album came together during the Brothers' recent HipHopDX interview. "I don’t think we set out to make an album," Ev said. "What’s different on this album from the others is there was no budget, dates, deadlines or booked mastering sessions. It wasn't like that. It was more like, wake up, smoke, coffee, then go to his place, and walk in and the beat's already going. I say, 'I like it,' and he says, 'I like this.' And that’s happening...That gets done, and then we move on to something else and someone comes over and we listen back. That happens over a year, or two years, or whatever. Then you look at ProTools and you’ve got a whole folder full of shit. People were asking for it enough that we said, 'Let’s bottle this up and find someone to put it out.' There was no conscious effort to make an album. It was a lot of fun for me like that, because I never went to work. It was just like another fucking day in the life."

'would say winning an Oscar with the three six mafia would be the highlight of his career' That was for writing. At least here he contributed something as an artist. People are hearing him on a #1 song.

"His time isn't ending lol, he just didn't have two of the top 5 biggest singles of the year like he did when Recovery was released. And would you really rather the most popular rapper be DRAKE?" shit ill take drake over eminem at any time. eminems a fucking sellout for doing pop. at least drake has done pop rap/rb since the beginning of his career. his songs are dope while eminem used to be dope and then fell right the fuck off beginning with encore and deepening it with mmlp2 when he broke his vow not to be associated with pop singers and do songs with rihanna.

"J has hit singles like Bounce It (it went gold, look it up), 23 (11 on hot 100), and bandz a make her dance" Yet being on Perry's song has become the highlight of his career.

    • Anonymous

I would say winning an Oscar with the three six mafia would be the highlight of his career. Not too many rappers can say that.

  • thuglife

Step Brothers - Lord Steppington - 5,400 (5,400) welp... i guess hip hop is officially dead.

  • Anonymous

"she sold more than DJ Khaled" Does she has platinum and gold singles? Nope.

  • Anonymous

Kendrick's not doing anything special ETK, and your groupie ass knows it.

  • Hate's Only Hate

HAHAHAHAHA to all the haters of good rap. The hate on juicy j and 2 chainz never stunted their success. Not only does juicy J have hiss 1st no.1 hit wit dark horse, 2 Chainz has another top 10 hits with talk dirty. These haters talk about 2 chainz and juicy j's career dying yet each of them has top ten hits. Jason Derulo ain't big until 2 chainz appeared on a song with him and katy perry was coming off of a disappointment. If K Dot was so good, how come he's struggling?

    • Anonymous

"He was on that robin thicke single and that flopped. He ain't touring that much." Wrong. The Robin Thicke song became a Top 40 hit, not a flop. And Kendrick did tour a lot. "When 2 chainz appears on singles, they still do better than average." Other people's singles, maybe, but his singles, no.

    • Anonymous

Kendrick struggling? LOL wtf are you even talking about.

    • Anonymous

He was on that robin thicke single and that flopped. He ain't touring that much. Also, Def Jam did not promote his album that much because they wasted their money on the hall of fame flop with big sean. When 2 chainz appears on singles, they still do better than average.

    • Anonymous

sorry but 2 chainz album flopped compared to the last one

    • ETK

he's not struggling dummy, he hasn't released anything over a year.. just living off GKMC hype and making serious tour money. Having a top 10 single ain't shit compared to selling out arenas all around the world, the nigga been to Europe and back for God's sake he ain't struggling

  • Anonymous

Sure hope Ty Dolla $ign isn't signed to a major label cause thats a flop

  • Anonymous

Childish Gambino putting up good numbers.

    • Anonymous

yep, outsold French Montana, who claimed to have a classic album and that he was gonna sell 200k first week.

  • Seaside

Why are people still buying Wacklemore go cop Evidence and Alchemist Lord Steppington!!!

  • Rozay O'Donnell

Like my nigga/fellow MMG compatriot-in-arms Ricky Rozay just said, Rick Ross is set to drop his best album to date, a classic I might add, so 2 months from now, you'll forget all about Wacklemore and Ken Dick Lamar! Bawse!

    • Anonymous

Ross had his years but its all downhill from here. He will never be as big as when BMF came out and Meek came on the scene

    • Anonymous

Speak the truth my Niggaz, 2014 is the year or Ricky Rozzay and MMG. Ross = Bawse. Peace out thugs

    • Anonymous

Ross is finished, no street rapper will ever sell 350K again, fat nigga better put on a dress, do a song with Miley Cyrus and give an interview saying that Eminem was his artistic inspiration.

    • Anonymous

nigga said his last turd of an album was a classic too LOL

"You're still wrong. That song was still a hit. It's barely been a year since Prism was released and Teenage Dream was released in 2010. Wait and see where Prism goes years from now. Juicy J only has ONE hit single and that's Bandz A Make Her Dance. Dre is better because of his contributions to music. Like I said, Dr. Luke is a pop producer, not a hip-hop producer like Dre. BTW, Dre only did one song with Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys is not a pop artist, she's R&B. Dre is still a hip-hop producer." Keep dickriding katy perry but any true musical buff can see that unconditionally disappointed. Bounce it went gold (which by the way, was produced by Dr Luke so that makes luke a hiphop producer as well)

    • Anonymous

That's actually sad that Juicy J had to sell out and be on a pop song to get a #1.

    • Anonymous

Dark horse just took. no 1. How does it feel for your hated rapper to be no. 1?

    • Anonymous

I'm not dickriding anyone, you're dickriding Juicy J. Any music head would know that Unconditionally was a hit. Bounce It was not a hit song. Also, Dr. Luke is NOT a hip-hop producer, he's a POP producer. Making one song with Juicy J doesn't make him a hip-hop producer.

  • Ricky Rozay

Damn aint no numbers on them hip hop albums. Mastermind comin March 4. Rozay ready to drop another classic on the game niggas! Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • scram

Thanks, HHDX! Can you include Jhene Aiko's Sail Out EP in the next week's update? She's been holding up so well on the charts for an EP.

    • xxx

She sold another 7,100-7,200 copies this week for a grand total of about 109,000 in the US so far, VERY impressive for a debut LP, and as a matter of fact, for any kind of EP. I agree though, if HHDX are getting the chart leaks, share some more albums damn. At least all the hip-hop ones within the top 200!

    • Anonymous

she sold more than DJ Khaled

  • Anonymous

"Its no. 2 right now but may go no.1 this week, hence when i said J ABOUT to have his 1st no.1 hit. You're right when you said that Katy Perry ain't poppin like that. She ain't having any more no.1 hits, at least from the album, Prism without some help." This has to be a joke.

  • Anonymous

If not this week, then next week, Juicy J will have his 1st no. 1 hit. Doesn't matter if he only had one verse, he still saved katy perry from becoming irrelevant after Unconditionally disappointed (note that perry had no. 1 hits before so this no. 14 showing disappointed.) Also shows that Dr Luke>> Dr Dre. This adds to bandz a make her dance (platinum), bounce it (gold), and 23 (gold) in addition to his oscar work on hustle and flow.

    • Anonymous

You're still wrong. That song was still a hit. It's barely been a year since Prism was released and Teenage Dream was released in 2010. Wait and see where Prism goes years from now. • Anonymous

Unconditionally obviously stopped her streak of hit singles. Prism is falling behind teenage dream in album sales. That went almost 3x platinum where as this just barely got 1x platinum. Juicy J has hit singles like Bounce It (it went gold, look it up), 23 (11 on hot 100), and bandz a make her dance. If Dr Dre is better, how come his production don't even get a release while luke's songs go no.1 most of the time? Dre works with pop artists too like alicia keys and Gwen Stefani.

    • Troll Killer

This guy's stanning for Juicy J so hard like he thinks that it'll get him to notice him when it won't. He probably has pictures of the guy on his wall that he jacks off to every night.

    • Anonymous

A fucking pop star like Katy Perry with non-stop hit singles and a platinum album is far from irrelevance and doesn't need saving. If anything, she's helping Juicy J since the guy can't get another hit song. Also, Dr. Luke is not better than Dr. Dre at all. Luke is a pop producer who works with shitty pop artists while Dre is a hip-hop producer who works with hip-hop artists.

    • Anonymous

Its no. 2 right now but may go no.1 this week, hence when i said J ABOUT to have his 1st no.1 hit. You're right when you said that Katy Perry ain't poppin like that. She ain't having any more no.1 hits, at least from the album, Prism without some help.

number 1 hit my ass. katy perry aint poppin like that no more. especially with some ghetto rapper on a song with her
