Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 10/20/2013

Dom Kennedy breaks into the Top 30 with "Get Home Safely" while Drake and Pusha T stay in the Top 15 with "Nothing Was The Same" and "My Name Is My Name" respectively.

This week, no new Rap albums broke into the Top 20 on the Billboard Top 200 charts. Still, there were a few notable releases that cracked the Top 200.

This week saw an addition from Dom Kennedy's Get Home Safely in the Top 30, for instance. The project was the only new Rap album included in this week's Top 50. Young Dro also had a new addition to the charts with High Times. Dro's release entered at #57. The project sold more than 6,000 copies. Game came in at #88 with OKE's deluxe edition, which sold more than 4,000 copies its first week.

Other rappers held on to slots within the Top 20 this week. Drake remained in the Top 5 on the charts, selling more than 57,000 copies of Nothing Was The Same in its fourth week out. Pusha T held on to a Top 15 slot with My Name Is My Name, a project that sold close to 20,000 copies in its second week.

Drake's Nothing Was The Same Stays In The Top 5

Drake's Nothing Was The Same landed at #4 on the charts this week, selling more than 57,000 units. The project has been a consistent mainstay in the Top 5 on the charts since it was released on September 24. Drake's music gained additional fanfare last week due to a new interview featuring the Toronto rapper. During Drake's interview on Q with Jian Ghomeshi, the rapper spoke about why he feels his personality is sometimes misunderstood because of the content in his music. “I'm so sick of people saying that I'm lonely and emotional, and associating me with this longing for a woman," Drake said. "I hate that. It bothers me so much…'cause I do make music that makes you feel something, but I'm actually not that guy in real life. I'm a happy person." Drake is currently on his "Would You Like a Tour?" tour with Future and Miguel.

Pusha T's My Name Is My Name Remains In Top 15

Pusha T's My Name Is My Name debuted in last week's charts at #4, selling more than 75,000 copies in its first week. This week, Pusha T sold approximately 19,000 units, landing him at #14. Pusha T's release has allowed many fans to wonder about a potential Clipse album being released. According to Pusha T, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams have also expressed interest in a new album from the Virginia-based duo that also includes No Malice. “[Kanye West and Pharrell] both are like, ‘Yo, we just need to do the whole Clipse album. Both of us. And that’s it.’” Pusha T recently said in an interview with Juan Epstein. For now, Pusha remains in the Top 14 as a solo artist continuing to establish his Name on the charts.

Dom Kennedy's Get Home Safely Arrives In Top 30

Dom Kennedy's Get Home Safely debuted this week at #29, selling more than 10,000 units. Kennedy's Get Home Safely features Krondon and Skeme, but otherwise, Kennedy mans the album on his own. During a September interview with HipHopDX, Kennedy spoke about how proud he is of the album he's delivered. "They can expect the highest quality music they’ve definitely heard from me, and they’ve probably heard from a lot of genres, not just Hip Hop. I’m introducing the album to encourage and reach a lot of people that probably never knew who Dom Kennedy was. But it’s in a great way. Without changing what I do or without compromising the integrity of Rap music or anything, I feel like people will be proud to say that this is their favorite Rap album of the moment. I feel like it’s been few and far between that people are able to say that in our generation. For people interested in Hip Hop and Rap music, I feel like they’ll be proud to say that."

"It's a mixtape" The version on Itunes doesn't have any DJ lead in's, therefore it's an album. You've just been schooled. Take it like a man and go about the rest of your day in peace.

    • Anonymous

remember when you said Khaled is worth 35 million LOLOL, more than Rick Ross, even though he's never been on forbes

  • Anonymous

"5,000 copies sold aint bad when you put it out for free" How much did it cost to put together?

  • Anonymous

"I could say the same thing about about your boy Ricky and 'God Forgive I Don't'! that shit still aint sold 600k over a full year later!" Ross's sales have never been explosive. Plus Kendrick doesn't receive half as much hate as Ross does everytime an album or compilation drops.

  • Anonymous

"kendrick is not really on his level of fame or recognition but he'll eat him alive when it comes to rapping" Oh wow. Rapping lol Sounds like another cypher. Go hard Kenwack. Show the world how gangsta you pretend to be. When the shots were being fired in Compton he was inside the house hiding under the couch lol At least when beef arose, Drake would go outside and fire back.

    • Anonymous

Quote-bitch, you don't know what hip-hop is about.

    • Anonymous

Is this all a joke? "Drake would go outside and fire back." You can't be serious. Drake is a bitch ass coward. He'd be hiding letting his bodyguard do all of the dirty work.

  • Anonymous

"how can you say he should have sold more when he got the 2nd highest selling rap album from 2012???" Now it's 2013 and Drake is closing in on his numbers in record time. Kendrick took a nose dive and despite your wild fantasies about him being an OG, even Macklemore outsold him. Game over.

  • dough

Drake is $... this album is already close to Lamars on numbers... that's crazy, that's crazy, that's crazy!

    • Anonymous

its not that crazy when you think about it. this is drakes 3rd album and he basically got the same fans as justin bieber and lady gaga kendrick is not really on his level of fame or recognition but he'll eat him alive when it comes to rapping

50 can't even get a release date for his album because he know no one is going to buy his shit right now & his run is over & he don't want to face that reality when his next album flop Street King Immortal is becoming the new Detox he started making that shit in 2010 & it's not coming out this year & it might not come out next year. Jay-Z drop a album out of nowhere that he recorded in a few weeks just because he can in 2013 10 years after he retired from this shit to let the young niccas eat now he is back snatching crumbs right from under the bakers thumb. Didn't this nicca 50 say that he was gonna drop an album every time someone from Jay-Z label drop a album? 50 went up against Kanye & lost J Cole went up against Kanye & Won I dare 50 to try to go toe to toe with J Cole he diss retarded kids just imagine what he would do to 50 Cent & I'm out

    • Anonymous

      J. Cole went up against Kanye and won??? LMAO are you shitting me an experimental album that he made in 2 weeks with no lead single of video. Something tells me Kanye was only competing with himself

    • Anonymous

It's all 50's fault. He did all this to himself.

    • Anonymous

j cole dissed retarded kids then wrote a heartfelt apology as soon as he got called out on it just imagine how he would croch down into a ball and beg 50 not to hurt him!! but cole put 50 on his last album so its all love!!!

    • rljunior87

I was just thinking the same shit the other day watching a 50 interview. He used to talk so much shit about how much he sells and others dont, now look at him

TRUE STORY: Kanye: Am a God God: Kanye pleez stahp Comment If You Liked.

  • Anonymous

The height of the sales obsession and the sickness was in 2007 when 50Cent decided to battle Kanye in a sales battle to see who could sell more records. Not who could make the best album or win the most awards but who could sell the most albums. 50Cent even claimed he would retire if he lost the battle and after a while he finally did but the damage was already done.

    • Anonymous

no he isnt.... yall are just too young to remember anything before 2003 LOLOL

    • Anonymous

50 is responsible for people putting beats over lyrics in Hip Hop.

    • Chi Town Bound

To me, that album sale battle went either way. Kanye outsold 50 in the U.S, but 50 outsold Kanye across the whole world. But they only counted in the U.S. for some odd reason. But you're right, he did kinda retire because he's doing other shit to make his money, but do doubt that some of his new tracks, SOME, shows that he hasn't lost his touch

  • Dro fell off...

Smh I hate to see Dro go out like that, 6k 1st week?. TI benched him too long and the game passed Dro by. The album and title str8 wack. I love Dro but I dl that shit and erased em all one by one. Smh!

  • Chi Town Bound

Drake can sell 3 million for all I care. It's all about the quality of the album. He can sell a shitload; that doesn't always mean it's a great album. I don't know why people think that money equals skill and techniques. Lil Wayne can say "Pussy" like a thousand times on his track, and he'll probably make like $20mil off of it. Does that mean he's the best rapper out there? No. Just because these rappers have a lot of money doesn't mean they are the best out there. Quality will always be more important that quantity, IMO

  • Anonymous

"jay, macklemore, kendrick and drake all going plat! you would think he could at least move 60k first week with all those features and publicity stunts he pulled!" Jay always goes platinum, so that doesn't even count. Drake was a given, while Macklemore was a fluke. I won't even mention the other guy simply because his numbers aren't anything special. Khaled is 7 albums deep, and is doing it without a platinum album. That's fucking impressive. Kendrick had Dre as his co-sign and still hasn't even pushed 1.1 mill. That's fucking pathetic.

LOL ^ i dont think he understood the "trolling"

    • billy bucks

I was talking about this the other day. There are "rappers" that know how to make music (catchy songs) they aren't the greatest lyrically, but they get some nice production and a melodic hook, and they sell a few albums. But then you have RAPPERS, MCs, true verbal artists that can murder the mic, but for one reason or another never truly hit commercially because they can't they never develop the knack of macing MUSIC. That's why Outkast (to me) is the greatest. They both can murder the mic, and they know how to put a song together

Jay bought most of the albums after selling a million to samsung, K Dot had Dr Dre buying most of his albums, Macklemore also bought his own albums. Drake, however, is the bright spot where his fanbase bought his album (they are true hiphop fans.) Suffering form Success didn't get a lot of promotion.

Drake has the formula. Bitches buy albums, especially the white ones who worship Beiber and watch Twilight. Drake has a the little teeny-bopper chicks in love with his sensitive-player shtick and his sing-songy tunes. The only time most of us dudes listen to Drake is if we got a bitch in the car or at the crib otherwise his music is just to soft. His fans shouldn't be crowning him after a couple albums, let's see if he lasts as long as his Boss.

all you drake haters have for arguements is that wack rappers have sold big before. Well they have never been as consistent as drake rappers like vanilla ice and soulja boy may have sold big for their first album. AFter that they fell off while drake been on top of the rap game since 2008 and dominating the charts. Drake is the god of rap deal with it.

I salute to his success, he's a multi-talented artist but I prefer HipHop from African American artists where im drom and artists in general who don't cater a large portion of their music to females. LL Cool J was extremely succesful with a career that catered to the females but he had balance in his bag because he could drop hardcore songs and battle other rappers when challenged. Drake is the most popular rap-singer of this era and I'm sure he will have equal success to similar artists like Nelly, Ja Rule, & 50Cent who all used the rap-singing formula to dominate for a while. Who would have ever imagined that the face of HipHop would be a Canadian Bi-racial Jew who was a former TV star.

10K is not bad for an indie rapper with no major label promotion, radio singles or buzz.

    • Anonymous

BruthaDee why do you bring up G-Unit everytime someone takes a shot at MMG?

    • Anonymous

G unit sold more back in 2005! And they had awesome clothing for us.

    • Anonymous

10k is good with no buzz or promo. If he had a heavy buzz, online prescence or was on Wssh then 10k would be horrible don't agree ask French, MMG, YMCMB about their last albums.

    • Anonymous

hahaha 10k sucks for anybody signed. Indie or Major. 10K is good for niggas with only a distribution deal. Dom has no buzz because he can't make good records. His online presence is TRASH. I barely see his ass on worldstar

  • realish

got dam drake is killing 58k last week? hes def passing jayz n wacklemore

  • dowhatchdo

Nipsey and Dom both made $100,000 racks without a major or compromising.Good shit!!

    • dowhatchado

Minus budget still in the neighborhood close to $100,000. But real money is made off shows

    • Anonymous

Dom generated $100,000 yes, then you subtract expenses. I don't know what his budget was but the expenses with recording, mixing/mastering pressing/packaging and distribution are where an Indie artist money goes. Dom makes his real money doing shows and touring.

    • Anonymous

      Dom aint make no 100k

  • whocaresidont

Did Danny Brown drop from top 20 to not even in the top 200? Must be some kind of record.

    • Anonymous

Nah, he's still on the charts DX just chooses what they want to show each week. They don't show all the Hip-Hop albums on the whole Top 200

  • Eric Lujano

Pusha T's album wont even go tin! LOL!

  • Anonymous

How is Drake not platinum yet? shit its been like a month!

  • Anonymous

I think I will base what music I listen to from now on according to what sells the most, that sounds like a grand idear.

  • Anonymous

The sales obsession was a sickness I wish had never started but ironically the guy who made it popular won't be able to ever release another album because his sales will be less than the rappers he mocked when he was able to sell.

    • Anonymous

his worst selling shit still sold more than a lot of these new rappers sell in 3 or 4 albums total

    • Anonymous

50Cent wasn't the first artist to brag about sales but he was the first rapper to make it a focal point of his career and brainwash his fans to do the same. JayZ can feel free to brag about his sales prowess because he has longevity in this game with a consistent catalog of platinum that spans almost two decades (1996-2013). LL can brag if he so chooses he has six platinum albums, 5 Gold albums and has a career that's lasted from 1985 to 2013 dropping albums. These microwave rappers ride a hype machine and drop 4 albums and then wanna brag like they did something.

    • JJ

Umm..Did you forget the line "only dudes moving units Em, pimp juice and us"? Who fell off worse Nelly or Ja Rule?

    • Anonymous

before 50 it was LL what the fuck you think "momma said knock you out" was about boxing? ahah in the early 90s all the west coast artist talked about was going platinum plus and they did when you hate so much you become a dick rider and dont even know it to many people with 50 dicks in there mouths.

    • Anonymous

50 was the first to boast about sales? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HOW OLD ARE YOU? omg save the children

    • imho

fer real. and what funny is rapperrs like to bash the fans n supporters for comparing numbers and albums and stuff but rappers be the first to eb like im bette rthan him. my verse is better. ill sell more .. but when a fan does it its oh fuck him. lol

    • Anonymous

but most of the artists 50 cent mocked about sales couldnt sell more than him, cam, ja, etc... all finished, he could easily sell more than them any day of the year

    • Anonymous

new flash! 50 wasnt the first or the last to boast about sales!

  • Anonymous

NWTS was ok, just don't: 1. Play it in a men's locker room 2. Play in a car with more than one dude 3. Workout to it (can't get sultry on the bench). 4. Play it in a barbershop. 5. Blast it out the whip driving alone (have your bitch with you).

  • Pulse

Pusha T alb the best on here

My boy Dom did all right.

  • Moonshine

It's his Bosses turn to shine

  • Drake Til Infinity

Drake and K. Dot are proof that quality hip-hop music can still sell.

    • YaGrandPa

I'll take Pimp C, Devin the Dude, Andre 3000, Cee Lo, Chamillionaire, Big KRIT and hell even Kid Cudi rapping and singing over Drake crying ass.

    • Anonymous

Biz never claimed to be a singer and off key singing was his schtick after beatboxing. On the other hand your boy Drake claims to be a singer for real, if he only knew how much better rapper than a singer he actually is.

    • ^

All three of you idiotic dickriders are wrong. Drake ain't shit.

    • youngsta

cosign drake til infinity and ovo. but drizzy is already better than those old fools.

    • OVO

Hate all you want GrandPa, Drake is hip-hop! Cosign Drake Til Infinty.

    • Drake Til Infinity

Drake has dropped some quality records--that includes his 3 mixtapes, Take Care and NWTS. Drake is just as hip-hop as Kool G. Rap, KRS-One and ATCQ. Nobody complained about Q-Tip or Biz Markie when they sang. Drake's a better rapper and vocalist than Tip or Biz. Biz was horrible at both and single-handedly ruined songs (e.g., Kool G Rap's - Erase Racism).

    • YaGrandPa

I know you didn't just say Drake and quality hip-hop in the same sentence, r&b maybe but not no damn hip-hop

  • Kid Kid

Calm down Drake fans! How can you sit here and brag about YMCMBs Drake outselling everyone's "favorite rapper"? We all know that Vanilla Ice has a Diamond album and Rakims solo albums never even went platinum, we also know that the Insane Clown Possee have more platinum albums than The Roots. Should true HipHop fans be cheering that Canadians and white homosexual advocates are selling more than heterosexual African American artists who pioneered the culture? Some of us who are familiar with the sales demographics based on age, race, income etc., don't put too much emphasis into sales because sales has never really represented us anyway, it represents the people who purchased 10 million copies of Vanilla Ice & Eminem records. New revenue streams have been opened to allow artists more servings on their table so record sales are no longer a must for an artist to eat and while aim happy for Drakes success I'm wary that labels will be looking for more Drakes now instead of Yo Gottis.

    • OVO

Who cares about sales? What matters is that albums like Take Care and NWTS are critically acclaimed. And that Drake wins song writer of the year awards. Drake is talented. Hate all you damn well want.

    • Anonymous

Some people listen to music because it's the "cool" music of the moment and everyone else is listening to it, some listen dor their own enjoyment, some listen to live a ghetto fantasy. Sales means everything to some people and nothing to other people. Drake fans bragging about his sales and laughing at other artists who don't sell as much is just silly because we all know who buys the majority of Drake records.

    • Anonymous

I guess you think McDonalds is the best restaurant too because it sells more meals than 5 star restaurant, using your logic that's what it's all about right? Last time I checked people listen to music not sales receipts, if sales and heavy promo is your criteria for choosing what you listen to then go ahead and join the herd.

      graftedgenese i see you

  • Fuck off u boring trolling no life niggas on here

if u can sell 5000 copies of a free mixtape on iTunes u definitely got a fanbase why did game destroy his rep by signing to YMCMB
