Kanye West Criticizes YouTube, Calls The Site's Player "Ugly"

Kanye West compares producing techniques to the art of Andy Warhol, speaks on his experience as an art student at Chicago's American Academy of Art.

During what was an impromptu Yeezus listening session held in Switzerland this week, G.O.O.D. Music artist Kanye West was a man of many words as he shared his thoughts on everything from producing to the video-sharing Website that is YouTube.

The “New Slaves” rapper made quite the comparison during his speech as he commented on the similarities between sampling/producing and the way in which noted Pittsburgh artist Andy Warhol created his art.

“What I want people to understand about sampling and producing is that it’s really similar to—and I know this is obvious what I’m going to say, because I’m a black guy so I’m gonna name the ‘most obvious artist in the world’—Warhol, but it’s very similar to the way Warhol would appropriate a Campbell’s Soup can is the way I would sonically appropriate a Ray Charles sample or a Michael Jackson sample,” said Kanye, according to HotNewHipHop.com.

Kanye’s Warhol mention doesn’t serve as the first time the rapper has gone on to reference a popular artist. At the top of the year, the Windy City spitter compared himself to the late Jean-Michel Basquiat and even Picasso during a performance in Paris.

The Yeezus crafter further commented on art as he criticized YouTube for the sites lack of aesthetic appeal. He also gave listeners a little insight into his past background as an art student.

“[I hate YouTube because] the player is so ugly, and it’s presented in such a terrible manner,” Kanye revealed. “I want everything I do to be presented in an art context, as this is a form of sonic art. I was an artist originally, I have been in art school since I was 5 years old. I got scholarships to three art schools, Art Institute of Chicago, Saint Xavier, and the American Academy of Art, where I ended up going—and I dropped out because I had an assignment where I was supposed to do an ink painting or something, and I would take two weeks to do it, and when I looked at my work, I just felt that I would never be one of the great visual artists of the world.”

Kanye West’s listening session in Switzerland comes just days before the June 18 release of his sixth studio album, Yeezus.

I wish the media would ignore him as he wants to be left alone. Just ignore Kanye Best for a while... The world can do without his music... Ive seen Steve Jobs, and Kanye, you are no Steve Jobs, neither do you have the mindset or sense yet to change the world... You cant even portray your self in a correct fashion with the Media... and you expect to change the world?.. Radio can survive without you homs, but the tech industry couldnt without Steve Jobs... Hell music today, couldnt survive without Steve Jobs... . If you were genius, Rick Rubin wouldnt be saving you a week to your album release... Yeezus my ass, no one saved Jesus on the cross Nicca.. He saved us... LEAVE THIS GUY ALONE.. he wants to be ALONE...

You can't make people hate you. They'll do that whether you be yourself or do everything they say. So might as well just do you and be comfortable. Entertainment means allowing yourself to be criticized from 360 degrees.

Kanye's a super talented music artist. But why can't he just accept that as his existence rather than juxtapose his music with Jean-Michel Basquiat or Warhol. I get the analogy but it's unnecessary and neither individual became as fixated on one subject as Kanye has on racism and consumerism. He's becoming a walking contradiction and it sucks. Just be Kanye.

    • train

Co-sign everything you both said. Glad there's some people actually recognizing this. With that said, I'm still pumped as hell for Yeezus lol.

^ agreed. I think Jay-Z is a good example of someone who said he was great so much (but not too much) people felt comfortable allowing him to become that great, over time he was allowed to show and prove. Ye is dooming himself. I never read one Warhol interview where he compares himself to Rembrandt or some other great artist... Its arrogance at it's ugliest

Word. Kanye is missing the point for years: it's not up to YOU to decide whether you're (as a highly influential artist of your age) a modern day legend. You simply cannot name yourself a king and expect everybody to obey because you claimed the title. Matter of fact it's the opposite: focus on your art (or as you said, "just be Kanye") and let your works speaks for themselves. Mr. West should realise that the greatest ones never claimed that title, they have been awarded because their long living legacy.

Can't wait for tomorrow's version of HHDX's "Kanye West Has Opinion" article

  • Anonymous

Kanye needs to stop talking so much...He's making people hate him. No matter how how great your music is, people won't support if they hate your personality. Look what happened to Charles Hamilton...Or Azalia Banks.

    • Anonymous

^ almost has happen...so good point OP.

    • glueanalsex

still hasnt happened.. people still see the rock and vin deisel movies and they cant act and are douche bags. and kanye still is one of the biggest artists out there. im not sure why this particular comment is upsetting people, youtubes player is boring and their site isnt the best designed site by a long shot. It sure isnt something apple would find acceptable.

  • caption hindsight

because Im a black guy so Im gonna name the most obvious artist in the world' ___ you mean your going to name more obvious things besides letting us color blind folks know your black?! i swear i couldnt tell you were black through your numerous claims that your black and anti white music. im glad he let us know again.

    • Anonymous

^ as a black guy - I strangely support your stance. Yeezus don't wtf he believes. one minute he's black louis v salesmen next minutes he loves white women and is "not for sale."

  • Anonymous

I'm fed up hearing about this middle aged white woman on her period who dresses up as a black rapper and claims to be god.

its like kanye doesnt want me to like him anymore

  • lawless

Yeezy need to go back to his no interviews policy. The dude is just too controversial in anything he says. Shut up and make music.

    • Anonymous

^ iif peoplestoped interviewing him he would die

    • Anonymous

Problem is people listen, so he feeds off of that. If people stopped interviewing him, or caring what he said, the focus would only be on the music.

    • Shadow Precinct

Nothing he says is really controversial, though. It's like Lebron. No matter what he does, the vocal subsection of people that really don't like him will continue to really not like him.
