Kendrick Lamar's "good kid, m.A.A.d city" Projected To Sell More Than 200,000 Copies In First Week

Kendrick Lamar is expected to have a strong debut.

Kendrick Lamar is slated to have a very strong first week on the charts.

According to HDD, K. Dot is projected to sell more than 200,000 copies of his major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city. Pop-country singer Taylor Swift is expected to nab the top slot with her latest LP Red, which will likely crown the charts with over a million copies sold.

The Compton, California native's latest release reached as high as No. 2 on the iTunes album chart yesterday. The LP features guest appearances from Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Jay Rock, Drake and MC Eiht.

Dayum man it's alot of haters on this site. As a true Kendrick fan i just admire the growth. This guy hasn't released any of the actual songs produced by Dre yet! I mean this is just the beginning real talk. So with that said, this album will probably go Gold in a few months time. It all about money. This dude has substantial shit but we live in a world of ignorant, shallow, sheep who just want to hear the same 808 the same flow the same shit. So keep listening to the same shit while the true music listeners admire greatness when we see it.

  • Anon

Not hating on Kendrick (I bought the album), but I personally liked Jay Rock's debut better. Good for K-Dot though, hip hop needs this.

  • ETK

I was told not long ago, TK don't stop that rap, now everytime I grab the mic I rock it just like that.

It's funny how one person thinks they speak for "the streets." Well the streets aint buying music so their opinion doesn't matter. Especially to record companies!

  • Anonymous

Kendrick is a decent mc, this album is being over hyped but what do you expect, people are so used to talented artist getting no promotion or airplay that people are sick of it and go on a huge hyping promotion sprees. He still deserves more sells and attention these most of these shitty copy cat mainstream acts.

  • Trent

I love the "da hood don fux wit kendrick" comments.. The the talks of understand complexity and y'all can't even spell. Comedic though.. and all y'all implying the race card, kill yourself.. There are hundreds of years in history of people being wrong and you could learn from their mistakes but you'd rather be a dumb ignorant fuck and piss what, little, intelligence you do have on being racist.

    • Trent

Spelling "lik dis cuz ih mace me gangsta or fom da trap" isn't grammar.. it's stupidity. I appreciate your drawn out and unecessary rant. Still a bunch of dumbass wanna-be thugs who just discovered the internet. Speaking on behalf of the "streets".. I got a street out in front of my house, I must be hood! Guess I don't understand "TEXT" or "SMS" At least you didn't respond to the logic behind how ignorant it is to be racist in 2012

    • Anonymous

The grammar expert committing a mistake in the very same sentence. Actually, the SMS format (texting) has thrived specifically because of the usage of slang spelling. "Eat more Chik'n" bothers you? Or do you understand the TEXT. After all, YOU responded to the sentiment that the urban hoods don't listen to Kendrick.

I see ppl commenting about how the hood dnt fuck w/Kendrick & only suburban kids like his music. That's false cuz ppl in the hood know Kendrick but even if u dnt, that's just ur opinion. Dnt generalize the whole hood as ppl who are ignorant & cant understand intellectual rap. Cuz Pac had both street shit & music w/substance & Biggie had bars & punchlines that werent no easy abc rhyme bullshit either. If u cnt understand complex rhymes or like music w/substance & only wanna listen to songs about killing, hoes & weed than u honestly have a horrible taste in music. Hip-hop is much more than that streetor ignorant shit.Do ur homework & learn about different sides of the culture b4 u judge shit.

@ yo....what the hell you talking bout the streets ain;t fucing with Kendrick....got to youtube and whatch that concert where damn near every STREET RAPPER COSIGNED HIM on stage,,,Kurupt, Snoop, Game, Daz, they all passed the torch to this dude, if that ain;t sreet then what is? This niggaz got a track with MC Eight, I mean what else do you want?

    • yo

Listen up, Pac and BIG WERE the streets, this nigga kendrick is from compton, but nobody is bumpin him in the streets. The auidence listenin to this cat is the same audience u see on Ems dick, Mac Millers dick, all that underground shit, that nobody wants to hear. Being a street rapper is being able to connect to the listener, have good beats, good hooks, and good substance, all KENDRICK has is versatility, everything else is mediocre at best.

this album is m.A.A.d boring!!! a classic? SMH

  • truth

There are two different types of hip hop : Hood (urban) hip hop (2pac , biggie, eazy, ross, big l etc) than there is suburban hip hop (mac miller, tech n9ne, eminem, lamar, any other corner underground artist) theres a reason why underground never gets respect, cuz it's is garbage, nobody is feelin it! Look I understand they are "versatile" on the mic, but I ain't feelin it! There is more to being "versatile" that makes you a dope artist. Wack hooks, wack beats, wack subject matter and rhyming words out of the dictionary doesn't cut it for me ! Theres a reason why suburban kids are the ones dickridin this stuff and the hood people all u hear is dead silence! Who u gonna trust in the hip hop community, kids from the burbs or the urban street community? I dont care how complex they can rap, wack is wack. Than suburban kids have the nerve to say that street hip hop is wack? That's almost as funny as a white dude tellin a mexican how to make mexican food! The fact of the matter is, suburban kids can't relate to people so they substitute rhyme versatile tryin to mislead the listener that they are dope when really they aren't! This is not a classic, and this will be forgottan about fast trust me on this. Street hip hop will forever be dominent and you suburban kids can stop tryin so hard to prove everyone you "know" hip hop, because it's really sad, and funny both at the same time !! LMAO!!

    • ^

Kill yourself for being so stupid.

    • yessir

I think what dude means is that lamar gets no respect in the streets nobody is feelin him, he is a hood dude, correct, but dont get it confused, there is NO buzz in the streets for him, whereas, in the burbs, there is m.A.A.d talk of how this is as "classic" as illmatic. At the end of the day the streets opinion on what good hip hop is far exceeds what the burbs opinion on good rap is, and the people dickridin dude are mostly suburban kids. Most people that listen to that super lyrical type of stuff tend to be suburban kids that can't relate to street stuff.

    • yessir

    • H.Kohr

It's exactly the other way around. "Real" niggaz from the hood with a lil' more in their brains than just air will always respect & enjoy music with a message or outstanding skills. Kendrick combines both so he is definitely one of the greatest mc's now. Being from the hood doesn't mean that you have to celebrate ignorance and gangsta-lifestyle. Only wanna be hard-niggaz with no clue what good music is hate on Kendrick. Go do your real hood-shit and listen to your real hood-music but don't write some dumb bullshit on a hip-hop website.

This album getting these kind of numbers is HUGE,Kendrick Lamar is proving that there still is a large group of people who appreciate music that has meaning and a story, i hope rappers learn that just trying to have an album riddled with drake, lil wayne, nicki minaj, rick ross etc features isn't going to mean big numbers.

    • Allen

The numbers will only keep growing. People just need to wake up to the fact that there is more out there than what is currently presented. (that goes for presidential candidates, food, other styles of music, etc.)

  • Malone

Kendrick isn't the most lyrically versatile artist I've seen. His portfolio might not be as impressive as his counterparts but the reason I think everyone has embraced Kendrick is because he brings and element of realism that hip hop fans have been deprived of for a long time. Yes legends (and I say legends with the utmost respect) like Nas, Common, Jay Electronica possess the lyricism and sincerity Kendrick has displayed but recently Kendrick has been more consistent. Sincerely Yours -Malone

The people who are buying Kendrick's album are the college and up crowd. If you think the hood is buying 2 Chainz, Future, Meek Mill etc. your crazy lol. Its the white people who buy that crap.

  • yeaaahh

I don't agree with the "race" comments but I agree with some others. If you go to the hood right now and ask most young people who they listen to they'll say 2 Chainz, Future, Rick Ross, French Montana etc.. not Kendrick, J. Cole, or Lupe.. I'm in college so I can tell that most college kids and other adults listen to less mindless bullshit and more rappers with better lyrics and music.. I even know adults in their 30s and 40s who bought Kendrick's album.. I'm not saying the hood is responsible for these wack rappers, I'm just saying what I've seen..

WOW. I was expecting 70-100-maybe 120 if he got lucky. But 200,000??? Real hip hop is coming back.

  • poetic assasin

that's our problem though - we feel the "hood" people only listen to one type of artist and dont buy music at all - Kendrick comes from Compton doesn't he? how more hood does he have to be? lol- is it because he is lyrical that the hood supposedly doesn't embrace him? I dunno i'm just tired of hearing that it is only white kids that buy music when it does good and we have no joy that a hip hop artist is selling music

    • Waxxy Gordon

It's not that he's "lyrical" He sounds like a cross of Andre 3000, Devin The Dude, and an alien - and the first two of these are better 'lyricists' than K.dot. The kid is a nice rapper but he's not doing anything any better than some dudes have already been doing for years.

  • 5

I wouldn't say it's just white kids who buy these albums, but most the time it's kids in the suburbs or some shit, (black, or white). If you go to the HOOD, and ask people who they listen to, their tell you Lil Boosie, or Meek or some shit, they don't say K. Dot, or Mac Miller etc. Anyways, glad to see Kendrick Lamar doing well.

  • Anonymous

Does his "first week" end on Thursday since he started on Monday instead of Tuesday? Or does he get an extra day? either way its a great look. I don't know what Taylor is doing. WOW!

why do yall use that excuse of its only white teenagers buying the albums when they do good? is there like a stat book somewhere?

I agree with Bing on the "white teen effect". It's mostly white kids buying up these albums from Kendrick, J Cole, Mac Miller, Wayne, Eminem, etc. Artists like 2Chainz or Meek Mill have way more buzz in the hiphop community then a Kendrick Lamar... But they're never going to move the same numbers until they get white nerd teenagers on their side.

    • Anonymous

"But they're never going to move the same numbers until they get white nerd teenagers on their side." You mean people who will ACTUALLY pay for what they want. I call this the white teen effect (Mommy/Daddy, can i get that album/go see that show?). It's the reason why only certain artists (Eminem, Lil' Wayne, Kanye West etc) can sell out stadiums as opposed to music halls. And a lot of that comes down to the white teen (or pop radio) fan base who invest in trending music. As the album begins to trend, the sales will go up. And on another note, it is a superb piece of work.

    • Anonymous

I love how people always make it about race. Here's a thought. A demographic, in this case, caucasians, aren't afraid to spend money on something they like. That's what it comes down to. Cheap motherfuckers bootleg everything then complain when their favorite rapper goes wood, yet can't part with ten bucks for a CD.
