Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 6/10/2012

Big K.R.I.T.'s "Live From The Underground" and Curren$y's "The Stoned Immaculate" crush the charts and expectations. Tyga's "Careless World" also gains some strong ground after months at retail.

Two major label albums debuted in the Top 10 this week. Meridian, Mississippi's Big K.R.I.T. has won Mixtape Of The Year at HipHopDX for the last two consecutive years. With his first studio album, the Cinematic Music Group/Def Jam Records sensation snagged a Top 5 debut by a margin of less than 2,000 units. His friend and collaborator Curren$y's second Warner Bros. Records release, billed as his first official album, The Stoned Immaculate , was three spots behind. This is Spitta's first Top 10 appearance, in a lengthy career of physical and digital projects, several of which appeared on the Top 200. Both of these albums were available for free stream online prior to release, perhaps hinting to a new promotional method proven successful. Also noteworthy, Tyga gained an impressive 14 spots, while label-mates Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne all lost chart places from the previous week.

Big K.R.I.T. Might Not Be So Underground After All

DXnext alum Big K.R.I.T.'s Live From The Underground sold over 41,000 first-week units. The major label release featuring 8Ball & MJG, Ludacris and Blues icon B.B. King was less than 2,000 units behind Neil Young & Crazy Horse's latest album as well. The breakthrough album from the emcee/producer features 2011 single "Money On The Floor," and solo single "I Got This." The album has pulled critical acclaim from a number of media outlets, including a 4.5 out of 5 at HipHopDX.

Curren$y's Breakthrough Scores A Top 10

After two Def Jam-distributed albums in 2010 and a charting mixtape last year, New Orleans, Louisiana veteran Curren$y has billed The Stoned Immaculate as his official debut. The response showed, giving Spitta not only his first Top 20 appearance, but a coveted Top 10. Now backed by Warner Bros., the release features Rap peers Wiz Khalifa and K.R.I.T., in addition to '90s stars Fiend and Daz Dillinger. Curren$y told DX last month, "I went a lil' further than I usually do," and the fans seemed to have responded.

Meh, its the era of faggot rap, if your music dont attract the homo's, your not gonne sell anything, it is what it it

    • my

While this is somewhat true, this album was undershipped like crazy. Lets look and see how much this dude sales in the long run. Also remember the last couples dude to be really pushed from the underground (J.Cole, Wale, Drake,) have all turned out great.

    • Anonymous

shut up. you fags just won't go out to support the 'true' rappers you claim to love allday on the net.

  • SMH

Krit may hav sold 41,000, but like they said, he did all his production and no radio play, plus im sure hiphopdx doesnt have the resources to pull up digital sales and all that bs, and Krit no fool, i bet he getting a good chunk of of change from the sales.

  • tylr66

how can 41k be a flop for krit, when he has zero radio play and it's his debut album, only hardcore hip hop fans know his mixtapes exist, if 41k is a flop for him then whats 75k first week for b.o.b's sophmore album and his platinum singles or 25k for waka's sophmore album?

  • Anonymous

typical hip hop purist faggot hypocrite. talk all that shit about real hip hop then dont even support the album when it drops. that's why nobody respects your voice or values your opinion of how everything is gay. at least the "gays" buy albums and support their "gay" artists.

  • Anonymous

Who gives a fuck people! These are good numbers in today standards regardless. I guarantee if these dudes got radio play they would already have went gold, blame the fucking industry for only playing trash not these guys.

  • Anonymous

anonymous: hate to say it cuz krit makes good music but he definitely flopped in terms of seeing a sophomore release this album has been "coming out" for almost two years.....luckily he produced most of it himself.. ^ smh...... "spitta on the other hand did ok cause this album came out out of nowhere really and probably has some fans who don't even know ut came out" ^ double smh You don't know anything about that man's contract so stop it. It's his FIRST week of sales, NOT the LAST WEEK FINAL RESULTS. And THEN, you pat Spitta on the back when he and KRIT are promoted the same way, grassroots, no big promo budgets, let the music speak for itself. Curren$y's first album Pilot Talk sold a little over 10,000 FIRST WEEK. I don't even think you can see how badly you contradicted yourself.

  • asdsada

I just found ANOTHER mistake in your article - Childish Gambino cannot possibly be at 160,000, since 2 weeks before this chart he was confirmed at 162,936. Judging by that and his average weekly sales of 2k to 2500, you probably meant to write 170,000 instead of 160,000.

  • Anonymous

while the sheep are stuck on a label i own krit album so im one of those special 41 thousand people that owns a classic album.

  • Bawse

see I don't understand this y'all spent the whole week talking bout fuck YMCMB and let's support real hip hop but y'all didn't even buy K.R.I.T.'s or Currensy's albums. Y'all don't support real Hip Hop.

    • The MG

I think 41,000 is a very reasonable amount for him, considering the fact that he's not heavily promoted like Drake or Nicki, and that he doesn't have a top 10 hit song being played repeatedly 24/7. And not everyone knows who he is right now, so I'd say that 41k is a good start.

    • Bawse

^^^^^^ C'mon nigga those numbers ain't shit K.R.I.T. could of have moved way more units than some small ass 40.000

    • The MG

41,000 for KRIT and 36,000 for Currensy, and you say people didn't buy it? Lol. And I did buy KRIT's album last week and I'm playing that shit right now.

  • m.black

Sales are pretty weak..nothing really to get excited about though and I think I know why...K.R.I.T. and Curren$y have given A LOT of music away for free over the past 2 years, which rivals and even trumps their Major Label albums. It kinda explains for the weaker sales in a sense...Radio Play and Mainstream featuring also play a big role. I think they should've sold in the 60's-70's first week out for the strength that they have as independents hooking up with a major label. But then again they have no dominant radio single out for the majors to push either.

  • Anonymous

Travis Porter shoulda went GOLD by now smh....support the artists

41k and 36k with no hit is worth a salute in my mind, means KRITS and Curren$y's fans give a damn about em. Gonna buy one of the two albums this week so they hold up well.

    • The MG

^^ You're missing the point of what he's saying. They worked hard off of mixtapes and gained a sizable fan base to sell that much in the first. Not every single artist has to have a hit song in order for people to buy their album.

    • Anonymous

without a hit. why doesnt he have a hit. how is not having a hit some medal of honor in your book.

5000 people bought Future's album this week ? why ? I can understand Tyga and them other cats selling still but Future ?

Bought 2 copies of #livefromtheunderground last week, no iTunes. One in the car and one on my mantle. I'm from NYC. Salute real hiphop

  • Really??

Sales are no indication of quality but they are predictive of which artist will get a budget for their next project. Looks like we will be getting more free music from Krit and Spitta before another studio album...maybe its for the best. STUDIO ALBUMS ARE FOR POP STARS MIXTAPES ARE FOR US REAL NIGGAS...We support by showing up at your shows...even though its at a club where we would have been anyway but still its a nice coincedence.

YMCMB is the group for kids that can't think for themselves. cuttie-cutter BS. wayne is clueless. nicki is what you want her to be. tyga can't rap. and birdman buys albums to boost sales numbers. i'm glad we have YMCMB tho...keeps their fans away from the rest of us.

  • H-DUB

Not surprised by CURREN$Y and BIG K.R.I.T. Numbers, both were on Sale at Amazon for 7.99 and 8.99 ! But still, i like them both and picked them up !

  • Anonymous

I say give to hip hop what is hip hops' and to pop what is pops'. Currency and KRIT put out arguable the best albums so far this year, that fresh raw hip hop we have been missing, but the numbers dont reflect the quality of music. Taste in music is an individual choice not a collective attempt to sound cool so buy and enjoy the music you like, it is that simple.

  • Anonymous

These guys are living good he will prob make 6 firgures off this album considering def jam prob didnt spend money so unless he didnt take a huge advance hes good and also hes prob getting 6 firgures monthly on the road

    • YESSIR

YOU THINK KRIT GETTING 6 FIGURES A MONTH ON THE ROAD? LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NICKI GET HIGH SIX FIGURES FOR A SHOW

  • Anonymous

Big Krit produced his entire album, his budget wasnt big at all, on the other hand nicki had had producers that run about 6 firgures for one song plus big budget videos she considered one of the most popular artist in the world she should have sold more. Big krit is really a popular underground artist on a major 41k is good def jam didnt spend anything on promoting him.

    • FuKKK NiKKKi Minaji

nigga NiKKKi sold 7 copies worldwide no way that bitch is platinum

    • blaze

yessir where do you get your stats from Minaj has only sold 650k worldwide get your facts straight.

    • iLLz

profit equals revenue minus costs, dude is trying to say that even though Nicki sold a lot she had high costs (promotion, high priced production, expensive videos) so in the end since Krit had low costs (no promotion, in house production) maybe he was more PROFITABLE, i don't think this is the case but you never know....though I think no matter how high her costs might be I'm sure they've been recouped ten times over by her touring

    • DK

      What a logic...damn.Less than 100k worldwide> 1 milli worldwide

    • YESSIR

These hiphopdx guys are funny. Krit's and Curren$y's numbers are well below what this very site predicted last week and those numbers would've been considered a flop by many. Damn just keep it real. Both are good but mainstream just ain't feelin it.

    • Anonymous

lol @ nobody's selling. nigga who is nobody. another typical justification for failure. falsely applying it to everybody to make your favorites seem less pathetic by comparison. just keep it real my nigga.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOW FIRST LET ME SAY I AM A FAN OF SPITTA AND BIG KRIT. BUT SPITTA SHOULD HAVE NEVER LEFT WAYNE AND HE ALSO SHOULD HAVE NOT TREATED DAME DASH LIKE THAT WHEN DAME AND SKI BEATS GOT HIS BUZZ UP NOW YOU HAVE TO CALL BOTH ALBUMS A FLOP BECAUSE YALL CALLED NICKI ALBUM A FLOP. NICKI DAMN NEAR DID SPTTA SALES THIS WEEK. SO AS ALWAYS YMCMB IS THE BEST TEAM IN THE GAME. NICKI HAD A GREAT WEEK OF SALES THANKS TO ALL THE SUMMER JAM CONTROVERSY SO WE AT YMCMB THANK THE HATERS. HATE SPREADS FASTER THAN LOVE SO KEEP HATING THE BEST TEAM IN THE GAME ALSO YMCMB IS DOING GREAT INTERNATIONALLY. NICKI ALBUM HAS SOLD OVER A MILLION COPIES WORLD WIDE. TYGA JUST WENT ON A 3 MONTH TOUR IN EUROPE. TYGA MIGHT ONLY HAVE 250,000 BECAUSE OF THE FIRST MEEK SAMPLE PROBLEM BUT HE IS ALSO DOING GREAT IN EUROPE AND THOSE ALBUMS SOLD PUTS JUST AS MUCH MONEY AS A US ALBUM IN THE COMPANY POCKET

    • Anonymous

No flops are based on expectations.

    • YESSIR

^ FLOPS ARE BASED ON MONEY NICKI MAKING MORE MONEY FOR THE LABEL THAT CURRECY OR BIG KRIT. THE LABEL EXPECTED NICKI TO DO WHAT SHE IS DOIN WHICH IS SELL ALBUMS AND SINGLES ALL AROUND THE WORLD

    • Anonymous

Nicki's numbers are wrong think about it Currensy is at 8 and Nicki is at 22 with only a thousand less? It's a typo not that many people would have around the same sales. Also based on expectations you can't call either of these a flop. Flops are based on expectations which is why Nicki's was considered a flop by some she should have sold a lot more than she did.

Wow, these are some fucked up numbers all around. WTT came out before Take Care and Drake is still killing them? B.o.B. hasn't even reached 200K yet with that bullshit pop trash he put out last month. My question is why do hip hop artists even bother trying to sell out anymore? It's OBVIOUSLY not working. In the words of Phonte: "How the fuck you sell out when ain't nobody sellin?"

    • Anonymous

Watch The Throne: more Grammys than take care, global tour, no press or media run. No radio budget (i.e. def jam didnt pay for radio). Both rappers have been in the game longer than Drake and still put up numbers. Let's see drake due this after hes put out 6 plus albums. Drake suppose to do these numbers, he's new to the game (i.e under three studio albums). I actually think Drake is the only real artist that they have. Not to mention he looked up-to Jay and kanye long before he looked up to Wayne. Also take care is more pop/rand b which lends it self to a different buying demographic than a straight rap album with no pop or records strictly produced for radio play.

  • Matt

LMFAO, Drake is still raping the sales. Currency and Big K.R.I.T. can't never ever fuck with his numbers or talent for that matter. So I ask these Hip Hop DX dick riding faggot ass fans, what's a peasant to a god? Hahaha, haters gonna hate. Fuck yall.

Nicki Minaj didnt sell 35k this week..Do the math..She was past 500k last week and sold 35k this week and she's at 522k..?

    • Anonymous

That's the same thinking i was think. She was at 508k last week, 35k sold this week would mean 543k total. There is def an error somewhere.

  • internet gangstas at hme makin less than da maids of da rappers u laugh at smh

U nerds kill me talkin bout flop dis and flop dat a flop means when a album sell less than expected just because its not platinum or gold does not mean its a flop if a album is exspected 2 sell 2 mil da first week and only sell 1 mil da first week means dats a flop big krit and currency sold more den expected so dats not a flop dumbassess now dis me I bet u wnt get a reply

    • Anonymous

Theres no way you dont live with your parents. A flop is when the album isnt profitable. With the amount of money spent on production/promotion/videos for Nicki Minaj's latest you could call her album a flop. Krit and Currency will make more money from their sales/shows than most mainstream artists.

    • Ash Motown

Curren$y has been around the game for a while. He has his own imprint on Warner Brothers so I'm sure he fronted majority of this album budget himself. So really all Warner Bro. Records did was pay for distributions which they taking their cut of about half. Only features probably costing him any money was the Pharrell, Marsha and Estelle features. 2 Chainz, Wiz, and K.R.I.T. did it probably for the low cuz he is close with them two. Since K.R.I.T. album didn't cost Def Jam hardly anything and him being a producer as well entitles him to a larger share.

@ash motown I don't know where you get your figures from B but no artists now gets 4 bucks a pop for a CD. Even the big stars like Jay only get like 1.50 or 2 from a CD. CD sales are not the moneymakers for artists, its touring and merchandise shit that gets the paper now. Oh yeah and itunes singles.

In today's music climate Big K.R.I.T. selling 41K Curren$y selling 36 K is good. At 10 dollars a bop and Spitta probably getting around 4 dollars a CD made over 100 K this week.
