Funk Legend Jimmy Castor Dead At Age 64

The legendary funk/disco saxophonist passed away today at the age of 64 from unknown causes.

Today, Hip Hop lost one of it's most sampled and beloved forefathers. Jimmy Castor, saxophonist and leader of the seminal funk/disco group Jimmy Castor Bunch, passed away today at 64.

According to Prefix Mag, the legendary saxophonist who struck it big in 1972 with the song "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" passed away at 2:30 p.m. at the age of 64 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The causes of his death are currently unknown.

Castor's music has been sampled by dozens of Hip Hop artists over the years, including Eric B. and Rakim, the Ultramagnetic MCs, N.W.A., Kanye West and others. His song "It's Just Begun" also became a staple break of '70s and '80s b-boy scene, even appearing as the backing track for the Rock Steady Crew in the film Flashdance.

DX sends its condolences to Castor's family and friends. The scene from Flashdance can be seen below.

I am very sadden to hear about the "Transition" of My long time Friend & Colleague, Jimmy Castor (Composer, Musician & Producer). Back in the late '50s, while attending Music & Art H.S. in NYC, Jimmy had distinguished himself, as a Composer and Singing Group Leader (Jimmy & The Juniors). Also, during that period, Jimmy and I, along with a few other talented Musicians formed a Youth Combo and performed at many of the Metropolitan New York area Cabarets, Dances, and Weddings. This Band preceded "The Jimmy Castor Bunch." We also enjoyed riding Motorcycles together. The E-Man has achieved perpectual Immortality through his Blessings & Talents! -Bro. Ric Powell
