Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 6/5/2011

Nicki Minaj and Drake's debuts may be in a close sales race, as Rick Ross, Wale, Pill and Meek Mill continue to hold rank on the charts, as Jadakiss pushes his retail mixtape another week.

Independent releases from Vast Aire and Kool G Rap did not chart in the Top 200 last week, nor did a long-awaited full-length collaborative project from Canibus and Keith Murray, as The Undergods.

Rick Ross' re-vamped Maybach Music Group roster slipped out of the Top 10 with their new compilation, Self-Made, Volume 1, but the project still topped all urban releases. Now backed by Warner Brothers, the trio of Wale, Pill and Meek Mill sold another 18,000 units, backed by their Def Jam star leader. MMG's Teedra Moses, Stalley and veteran Gunplay of Triple C's also appeared on the project.

Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Holligans, now a platinum release, climbed six spots to #14. Mars has been an urban Pop sensation for Atlantic Records' roster renovation and newfound success.

Mars' label-mate, emcee Wiz Khalifa climbed five spots. With weekend performances at The Roots Picnic and Hot 97's Summer Jam, the Taylor Gang founder's major label debut Rolling Papers is headed towards gold status. The Rostrum/Atlantic Records release features Chevy Woods, Curren$y and Too Short.

Climbing six spots, Urban Pop princess Rihanna reached #23 with her platinum 2010 album, Loud. The Def Jam starlet is just shy of 1.3 million overall units sold.

Twenty five years after releasing their first album, New York Hip Hop/Punk trio the Beastie Boys crossed the 200,000 mark with their eighth studio album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. The EMI Records release, which dropped before Part One, features artists that Adrock, MCA and Mike D have influenced, including Nas and Santigold. The work fell to #25, 11 spots from last week.

Eminem could reach 4,000,000 sold by mid-summer. The Aftermath/Interscope Records superstar's 2010 album Recovery continues to move and shake on the charts. The best-selling album of last year features production from Havoc, Just Blaze and DJ Khalil.

Lupe Fiasco did indeed cross the 400,000 mark with Lasers last week. The Chicago, Illinois star's album features label-mate Trey Songz.

Odd Future's leader, Tyler, the Creator's Goblin sold another 5,000 units, landing it the #85 spot. A follow-up to 2009's self-released Bastard, Goblin features band-mates Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis and Frank Ocean.

Jadakiss' retail mixtape, I Love You (A Dedication To My Fans) fell 67 spots to #106. Releases as a free project earlier in the month, the D-Block/L.O.X. lyricist and Def Jam Records opted to release the fan-inspired project as a physical and digital retail project. Maybach music is putting up lloyd banks numbers. You have to give them props for that. Bad thing for them is its on a major record label so they have to give half the profits to their boss. Then they can split the rest between 5 people and walk away with 10 grand each. But to actually profit off of a horrible album is amazing.

Dawg, look at his sales, he's almost at 4 mil!!! Em is hip hop! Hey I know when you are younger and there is something you don't like you can't understand that maybe you and your friends are normal, but the average person that buys hip hop loves Em, he's the only that sales! Think about it, the reason people can't sell records anymore is because - they suck! But Em fans like him so much they actually go out and buy it! I know for you young cats it doesn't make sense but I'm older have a career, little bit of money and let me tell you like this IF SOMEONE COMES OUT WITH A TIGHT STILL, SOMETHING I HAVE NEVER HEARD I WILL PAY MY MONEY TO HEAR THEM! I know you young cats are like why buy it, but that's because you don't have money, the average cat that is making $60K, $70k, $80K will buy a good CD if it comes out. Em is the only CD that has come out in the last few years that MILLIONS agree it's worth buying. In this fucked up economy you have to be good to get people to spend money on you. Rick Ross, Kanye...they can't fuck with Em. I know you guys hate, but numbers don't lie. You can argue he sucks, has no skills, but the kid has one thing Ross and all those other fools don't and that is LOYAL FANS THAT WILL PAY THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY IF HE MAKES A GOOD AS ALBUM. That's real!

  • hey

COME ON LET'S BE REAL! IT'S EM'S GAME AND IT'S BEEN A YEAR!!! Pop bitches can't even out sell him! I'm thinking only Dre and Detox has a chance of selling 4 million in this day and time of Dead Hip Hop, weak economy and wack ass lyrics and rappers! Rick Ross could go plat with a gun and ski mask in his hand. I mean I keep saying it, people keep arguing but HIP HOP IS DEAD! LOOK AT THIS NUMBERS! PATHETIC!!!! IF YOU AIN'T EM, YOU BETTER BE POP OR R&B BECAUSE YOUR SHIT WON'T BE HEARD BY MOST. SO I ASK YOU, IF YOU CAN'T GET SOMEONE TO BUY YOUR SHIT, HOW IS IT ANY GOOD??? SIMPLE ANSWER, IT AIN'T! HIP HOP IS DEAD, WE ARE JUST WAITING FOR THE NEXT EM/DRE PROJECT PRAYING THEY WILL REVIVE IT! THAT'S REAL TALK!

Listen people, yall internet haters got it wrong,Ricky Rozay is winning yall dumb ass is too ignorant to see that. While yall worried about album sells he is selling out stadiums every other day. A album is pretty much an artist marketing tool. If the album is decent they will fill the stands and they make album money in one week that would take a whole year for slow fans to buy the album through the year

  • Rick Ross the Bawse

run what??? they ain't selling shit and officer ricky running shit!! HIPHOP IS DIEING ONCE AGAIN

  • cane

Who the fuck is Bruno Mars?

  • nibs

Because not only are people sick of that gangster shit, they also don't want to hear and entire album, no, an entire DISCOGRAPHY, that says nothing track after track other than: "I'm better than you and other rappers" Skyzoo, Joell Ortiz, Royce, Kool G, the list is longer than the list of artists tryin to capture that catchy south sound. Artists that may have incredibly intelligent and thought provoking vocabularies, say nothing but "I'm better than you" That's the problem. Even in the "real hip-hop" there is STILL no originality. Eminem sells because (even though I hate him) his "I hate you mom" shit is at least, original and mad white girls connect. I'll support Immortal Technique (the only artists who album sales still steadily increase in the 2000's) because he talks about real shit. 90s hip hop is dead. It was big then because it was all original. Hip Hop was still fresh in general. Not no more.

    • Ramiro

"you screaming no homo, but that's so homo, such a no-no, please swallow the fo-fo" FAGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

    • nibs

hahaha this shithead I'm saying the problem is hiphop isn't evolving enough, and that the industry has stopped it from growing. I hate to use analogies but the game is inbred and all we're left with now is deformed mashups of the same old formulas. soulja boy is pop and while he may have produced a catchy bubble gum dance song for kids, whatever creativity he had was taken from him when interscope began to mold him. I do give him credit that he did bring the first big wave of mainstream eyes to the internet for music. this was one of the cornerstones of change in the hiphop industry, and I think it was a positive change, as the internet has made it possible to step outside the box. and musical talent aside, I feel charles hamilton suffered a similar fate, as his pre-signing first album pink lavalamp really shone but he became an egotistical marketing disaster after a 7 figure contract its not just immortal technique or charles hamilton that have stepped outside the box. curren$y is a big one. blu. saigon was one of the first. jay electronica. and theres more I'm just too high right now yet i say all this knowing you're just gonna reply with something ignorant and hilarious.

    • SODDM

u could have just said that you are a immortal technique dick ryder fag. EMINEM >>> I.T. ANY DAY OF THE WEEK SOULJA THE BEST TO EVA DO IT SODMGGGGGGGGGGGGG

    • FUCK A NIGGA.NOHOMO

NIBS NIGGA YOU THE REASON HIP-HOP IS DEAD BECAUSE YOU STILL LIVE IN THE ICE AGE WHERE RAP HASN'T EVOLVED BET U STILL BUY OLD DISC RECORDS LIKE ITS THE 80'S SO GET JIGGY WHIT IT OLD ASS NIGGA,SWAGGGGGGG

    • WTF???

I NEVER talk on these things, but Heat357, are you possibly the dumbest person on this earth? Immortal TEchnique is dumb? Son, that was THE DUMBEST shit I ever heard. That man is a FUCKIN GENIUS, bottomfuckinline, you stupid fuck.

    • Ramiro

yup they fucked up the industry pretty good. alright man it was cool having a good conversation here, shit is rare now lol peace

    • nibs

It's true. And the industry did it to themselves so they could make as much money as possible back then, instead of lettings the industry grow naturally. Capitalize on the fresh sound of hip hop in the 80s. Gangster rap in the 90s and ring tone rap in the 00s. All we are left with now is a bunch a formulaic mash up of all 3. I will check out qn5 though for sure because I also thought the Saigon album was super dope. Thanks man

    • Ramiro

@nibs Yeah thats true man nowadays you cant say anything. It's like say something bad about a rapper and you're a hater, say something positive and you turn into a dickrider, shit dont make sense to me. I thougt Saigon's album was great. And marco polo is a hell of a producer, i like that guy. Check out the whole qn5 label they cool as well. The thing is I never thought hip-hop died, i always thought the fans are the ones that died.

    • nibs

And to heat357, you are so fucking borderline retarded it's crazy. Just because he uses words you don't understand doesn't mean he's making it up. You post any of his lyrics here that you don't understand and I'll help you out. Immortal technique is leaps and bounds more educated than anyone else in the game. Who would you consider an intelligent lyricist? Lil Wayne? I actually am awestruck someone could have that mentality. Do me a favor. Get a handful of people you know to listen to some tech and see if they agree with you.

    • nibs

@ramiro I'm glad you have a real opinion. I'm almost done with comments due to the lack of people that can have un-biased intelligent conversation. I definitely see where you're coming from, and to some extent, I am down with some of that stuff. Some of the lines Crooked I spits do blow me away. And I enjoy the odd Torae record. In fact, double barrell (marco polo x torae) is a great example of an album that really is super dope, but doesn't say much of anything. I just feel like people that enjoy that are now a minority, whereas in the 90s, it was cool.

    • Ramiro

Immortal technique doesnt make sense?? Which parts dont make sense maybe we can help you with that. Tech is a pretty wise man, i guess the only "moron" is you.

    • Heat357

I agree with you but come on man... Immortal Technique? He has the IQ of Lenny from mice and men... That guy is a moron who tries to play big words in his verse without making sense.

    • Ramiro

Although i respect your opinion, i gotta disagree man. There are still rappers nowadays who are creative, intelligent, and fun to listen too. Those are the kinds of albums i like to purchase cause like u i was never that into that "gangsta" shit, unless they got something positive to talk about.

    • nibs

haha you stupid fuck people like this are part of the problem

    • Anonymous

What the fuck are you talking about man?

  • Anonymous

This numbers are DEPRESSING ME week after week. I think I'm going to stop buying HIP HOP albums and download it on internet like many peoples are doing. I guess Ziggy or Stephen Marley will be on charts with their new albums.

    • slapyobitchass

Exactly niggas on here always bitchin bout sales of the popish artists and then bitch bout how they favorite rapper can't sell. Maybe if yalll niggas who bitch bout underground rappers not sellin actually bought the albums instead of downloadin em, underground rappers would actually have sales. You know why guys like Shady, Jay, Ye & Wayne get sales, cuz they audience buys they albums instead of sittin around downloading and bitching bout the numbers.

    • Anonymous

Exactly, hip hop fans are the biggest hyprocrites and most pathetic people out there when it comes to music.

    • Anonymous

Thats why the numbers are low...Especially for underground hip hop. Hardly any underground fans actually buy music....But theyre still the first to bitch about what an artist is doing with their music.

  • Connie Edison

The G Rap album was fake movie gangster trash; if more than 300 people bought it they were suckers. K. Rap's first three albums were brilliant but he's beeb playing himself ever since. More puzzling, is where the fuck is Joell Ortiz? You'd think with all his "fire" and "beasting" his last piece of shit would be jumping back into the top 200? Wouldn't it?!

  • Lol

Sell 18k, and you reach number 12 on the list. Industry is dead. And where the fuck is Kool G Rap? Fuck this.

  • Bryan Moore

Almost 4x platinum in a year is pretty damn good in this day and age, even if Recovery wasn't that great. Hopefully Lasers can get to gold status soon.

  • Nico 3

Wake up industry and release the Red Album, Detox, and The Carter IV already. Enough of these indie albums already. They don't even get released in most stores.

    • nibs

agreed. and these were huge money making artists at one time. labels are terrified to put it out there without 12-year-old-girl support. real music is now almost exclusive to the internet. real artists will tour and make wages that aren't in the millions but will still do well without an album on the shelf. take big krit for example. he'll never be as rich as jay-z. but he'll do better than most people will at their 9-5. before the internet, an artist could never have a chance of national independant success. the internet is the best thing to happen to the industry. I also co-sign that those albums will be garbage anyway. real music is on the internet. real artists will tour and make wages that aren't in the millions but will still do well.

    • Ryan MacQueston

all of those albums will suck

  • Doug Nichols

It's articles like these that send me back into my hip hop related depression.

  • t

jadakiss mixtape is ok im his biggest fan but man i had to drop $15 for 10 songs? hes lucky to have fans like me!!! lmao!
