Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 5/8/2011

During a week when even the most consistent artist slipped a few spots, The Beastie Boys reign supreme and almost take the number one spot.

Legendary Hip Hop trio, The Beastie Boys shook up the charts this week. Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2, the group’s first new release in nearly three years, was the top-selling Hip Hop album. After not charting at all last week with an online pre-order campaign, MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D narrowly missed the overall top spot to UK crooner Adele.

While no other Rap acts cracked the top 20, both Chris Brown and Bruno Mars used the popularity gained from various Hip Hop collaborations to hold steady. Brown’s F.A.M.E. continued a slow push past gold status, while Bruno Mars’ Doo Wops & Hooligans fell one spot down to the number 14 ranking and just shy of platinum.

After a significant jump last week, Wiz Khalifa’s Rolling Papers fell out of the top 20 yet remained the second-highest charting Hip Hop album. Rihanna continued to chart with her Loud album, which is well past platinum.

* Please note: figures below approximated to nearest thousandth.

Nicki Minaj remains the lone female emcee on the SoundScan charts. Having already been certified platinum; Pink Friday continues an epic run. The recent release of her "Super Bass" video, a spot on Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music tour and plenty of cameo appearances will likely keep Nicki on the charts well through the summer.

Lil Wayne will likely have two projects on the charts this summer. Wayne’s I Am Not A Human Being is showing no signs of leaving the charts anytime soon. And, pending any further delays, Cash Money Records’ flagship artist will likely release Tha Carter IV over the summer.

Snoop Dogg saw his eleventh full, solo release, Doggumentary, maintain on the charts. After a six-week stay, his most recent project featuring cameos from Wiz Khalifa, Young Jeezy and Willie Nelson, dropped twelve spots.

Despite criticism from some circles, the ever-controversial Waka Flocka Flame continues to chart. His debut album, Flockaveli is halfway to gold status after charting for over six months.

Continuing a strong viral campaign as well as consistently touring kept Diddy-Dirty Money within the top 200. The experimental, Euro-dance inspired Last Train to Paris is in the midst of a 21-week run on the charts.

Rank Artist Album This Week Est. Total
36 Nicki Minaj Pink Friday

Will Tyler, the Creator garner enough support to make the charts next week? Stay tuned to HipHopDX.

I dont think race has anything to do with the album sales. I think the main factor is the female demographic. All the top selling acts are the ones whos main fanbase is girls. Fact is alot of women (and young girls at that) dont know how to download music or burn cds. Using Kazaa and napster was a hard for them to understand to begin with. These days when majority of music comes from rapidshare and torrents its not a wonder they say fuck it and just got spend 12 bucks on the album. And this is the truth. Listen to any hip hop or pop station. Who is the people callin in to request songs 95 percent of the time? Its a woman. Its no wonder that pop and rap radio is geared towards club (dance) songs that women like. Its no wonder that every guy i know thinks having a CD player in the car is a must. Alot of girls have them too but they still listen to the good ole fashion radio alot. I dont know a single guy with a CD player in the whip who ever says "lets see whats on the radio". Never happens.

Gold is the new platinum. Platinum is the new Diamond. 250k is the new gold. 100k is good. In these times.

    • da1

Noo platinum is the new multi-platinum and diamond is the new thriller.lol People like Taylor Swift, Susan Boyle and Eminem are still going multi platinum. It's not like diamond happened often anyway. But white acts like Lady Antebellum, Justin Bieber and Lady gaga are still going multi platinum. Not to bring race into this, but I can't think of any black or hispanic acts selling those type of records anymore.

    • Sleepy_Jay

The RIAA really should introduce the Silver certification for 250k sales. I think only the UK and one other country offer silver certifications

  • Mook

Damn wayne could have went platinum for IANAHB if he would have did a video for Right Above It and release Bill Gates or With You as singles... his team is stupid for real but 800+k is impressive tyler doing around 50k....

    DJ QUICK???? wACK mILLer?

with no bullshit promotion, arrests, beefs, somehow the beastie boys pulled that out of their asses. im not even a fan of them, tbh, but got mad respect that their still puttin up good material after all this time and actually selling doing it. i was expecting 15k, but that shit made me happy

  • Pablo Escobar

Of course Tyler will; I'll expect a Top 5 Debut nothing less...He'll sell minimum 75,000 units easy; Album is digitally charting all over the world already anywhere from top 2 to top 15... Smh @ Nicki Minaj still pulling big numbers out of her plastic butt lmmfao.... Even more hilarious = Diddy @ just under 300k Best new this week is a complete WTF??!!! Holy shit, these numbers Beastie Boys just managed are mind-numbing. Total Surprise. Yes they are rap veterans and have the longest track record of any group but Damnnnn son That's Impressiv b/c well-recognized Legends usually pull weaker numbers with their careers having gone on only half as long as these guys. Probably due to their crossover appeal to rock listeners and I sure as hell AINT HATIN but at lweast rock isnt nearly as played out a scene as Pop/Techno/Electro is these days....

  • The MG

The Beastie Boys beasting again after 7 years. And with no played-out europop-inspired single to help it out either? Rappers take notes. Great album too!

  • LHamburg

yo check out some fresh rap of the german newcomer SAME with LA MC Hugh Augustine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6gzhiqLzvQ&feature=feedu

  • Swaggot

What are Drake's sales? they ain't been updated since December

  • L-Boogie

Hip Hop isn't even hip hop anymore, it's more like electro, pop, techno, and disco all into one. I can't believe how bad mainstream music is now a days smh.

    • HHH

Well, it's only so much you can expand on a genre that's over 30 years old. There was only so much new shit rockers could do until rock turned into something else. That's what we're seeing with mainstream rap, it's shifting into something else because the public demand wants to hear something other than what we've had for 30 years. Obviously to every person with at least 2 brain cells this is a given, but it's a bit sad that I have to explain such a obvious thing to you.

      Real Talk fam

  • AlShan Barnett

It took Tha Carter II, the best Lil Wayne album period as well as my favorite, forever to go platinum, and these people want us to believe, in this day and age, that I am not a human being is pushing platinum with 1 single, annoying as that single is, and with a recycled flow by Drake that you can watch on the Tim Westwood video.......... C'mon Son Fuck Outta Here With That Bullshit! Men lie, women lie and so does the record industry, they cop'n the albums and throw'n fake numbers, cus they got enough money to do it, and if you think other wise, you're lost. Real Talk

    • Anonymous

^^^^ too long didnt read bro

    • AlShan Barnett

I feel both of you, I cop albums yamean, like I go on the day it drops and pick up the CD, not off iTunes or amazon, I know he's on tour and yeah I just saw Miguel, my manz opened up for him, and son goes in, my girl tried to put me up on him a while ago and it took his show to make me see that he does his thing yamean. The material on that cd is not in comparison to anything else he has done that got him the critical acclaim. I'm sorry it's weak, "Ball'n with my bloods, call it B Ball." I mean how much more corny can you get. You might not make money fake'n the numbers, but if you think that a record company makes their money solely off of record sales, you're sadly being misled, hence why they tried to sign Lupe to a 360 deal when he decided to put out more music. In order for Wayne to be in the topics of discussions like we are having now, they need his numbers to look good, because he is not the best rapper or MC, but he will be in all Rap related convos as the "Hottest" "Rapper" right now. They can't have his numbers looking bad, watch, after he goes platinum with this record, they won't even show it on this radar. Then next focus for him will be Tha Carter IV. The numbers lie fam, because the people are not buying this stuff, especially with gas prices the way they are, and you can't say all the people that go to the show, because look how much you spend'n on that ticket. It's all a dirty game.

    • Anonymous

wayne didnt blow up with the mainstream public until the carter 3 with lollipop so ofcourse everything he does after that is gonna sell faster than carter 2

    • Anonymous

Lil Wayne have a strong fan base if you like his music or not. Dude is on tour performing to Sold Out Arenas. Many artists can't, not to mention rappers. It don't make sense for a record company to cop their own records. You don't make money doing that sh!t.

  • JOE6PACKNCGBOR336

IANAHB goes hard C4 wiz will do 500k but thats all man snoop not worried bought moving no units

  • Jessica.Smith

We want you to list Recovery, The Marshall Mathers LP & Curtain Call aswell seeing as they are all hip-hop albums and all on the billboard 200.

    • Rick Ross the Bawse

Fuck Feminem and his pop garbage shit. Who cares how much he sells, all you dick riders will suck his cock anyway. Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • r0cstar

Who the fuck r those rappers u r talking about. Besides Jig, em and a few other rappers this hip hop shit is dead and its time to move on to something else

    • Heat357

Jessica--- Don't listen to those fag boys. They're always trying to tell people what to listen to but they have no power.. And I agree I only came here for eminem's numbers too..

    • Doubl Negative

Damn, this Jessica bitch won't get off Em's nuts. Every week she's enquiring about his sales. If you're a true follower of hip-hop, you'd appreciate other rappers as well, not just Slim. I recommend you investigate Ill Bill, REKS, eLZhi, Fresh Daily, Celph Titled, Oh No and Blu.

    • Anonymous

noone cares except you, why do you need to know the exact numbers? he sold more records than everyone else put together, isnt that enough for you? whats another 50k here or there, go to another site for that shit.
