Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 3/20/2011

Lupe Fiasco can barely be topped, as "Lasers" leave a mark on the charts. Raekwon's "Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang" remained at war with the majors, and Lecrae and his "Rehab" are back in the Top 200.

Lupe Fiasco maintained a #3 spot in his second week on the charts. The Chicago, Illinois emcee may have had his share of disagreements with Atlantic Records over the content and direction of his third album, Lasers, however the work sold nearly 50,000 more units, bringing it halfway to gold status. Lupe's album features label-mate Trey Songz and longtime 1st & 15th singer Sarah Green.

Lasers was topped only by new albums from Adele and Rise Against.

Blink 182's Travis Barker released his solo debut, Give The Drummer Some to a Top 10 debut. The drummer's production work features emcees including the aforementioned Lupe, as well as artists including Lil Wayne, Game and Beanie Sigel. The Interscope Records released scanned just under 30,000 units.

For the third consecutive week, Floetry alum Marsha Ambrosious' long-delayed solo debut maintained a Top 10 position. The songstress is widely known in Hip Hop for her tenure as an artist at Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, as well as her feature work with Game, Slum Village and Busta Rhymes.

Young Money's Nicki Minaj and her Pink Friday came in at #13. The DXnext alum's record-breaking feat for a female in Hip Hop, both as a onetime #1 album, and consecutive weeks in the Top 10, a feat that recently ended earlier this month.

At #14, Rihanna's Loud  pushes well past platinum.

Kanye West's acclaimed My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy slid three spots to #35. Chef Raekwon, who worked on Kanye's album, fell 33 spots to #45. Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang, a concept in development since 2007, sold just under 10,000 second-week units. Released on his own IceH20 imprint, and distributed through EMI, the Wu-Tang Clan member's fifth solo work features Jim Jones, Black Thought and a reunion with Nas. Producers include Evidence, Oh No and legendary House deejay Kenny Dope.

Miami, Florida's Rick Ross was just outside the Top 100 with Teflon Don. Raws' latest work features Jay-Z, Drake and Cee Lo Green. Christian emcee Lecrae popped back into the Top 200 with his Rehab album, which is climbing towards 100,000 units sold from the independent Reach Records.

It's simple, PEOPLE BUY/SUPPORT MUSIC THEY LOVE. If you can't sell, that's because people don't want to waste their money on you. Em sells because people are willing to spend money on him, not just download his shit. Raekwon used to sell, but he can't now, he's done. It's not hard to understand, all these rappers that can't sell are because THEY JUST AREN'T WORTH BUYING! HIP HOP IS DEAD OR IT WOULD BE SELLING. EM 3 MIL, PEOPLE FEEL HE IS WORTH BUYING, BUT OTHER THAN HIM, WHO REALLY IS WORTH BUYING TO MOST PEOPLE? It's that simple. For those of you who say Hip Hop is alive, tell me how many album have you bough in the last year? It's obvious most aren't buying, they are just downloading, that means artists can't survive, that means HIP HOP IS DEAD.

Fuck, Rae sold only 38,000 units since 7th march, it ain't enough compared to the ep's quality, the Forever era when the Wu used to excel in sales is definitely finished

    • andre

It wasn't on the album you stupid fuck.He did it so that the younger generation could find about Wu-Tang and old school east coast hip hop that was made back in the day.Financially he didn't get jack shit for that.

    • BWS-Fish

Raekwon done a track with Justin Beiber. How much more pop can you go ffs???

    • Anonymous

yeah its pretty sad, watch, fucking wiz khalifa is gonna do huge numbers when his album is 90% ass if rae sold his soul and made pop records for 15 yr old girls and people with no taste in music he might do big numbers too

  • CooperHaus

Joell Ortiz is hot trash and the most tiresome hype of the last five years besides Saigon. Q: how many verses has he dropped in the last three years? The first album was decent, the rest is shit, as is his idiotic fake-ass 'nickname.' If he's trying to 'brand' himself, try CHUMP. Monch-- like Mos Def-- spits when he has something to spit. Joell can't keep his mouth shut but guess what? Only nerds are listening and it's not enough. Fuck Dre, Joelll needs to get with his GRE and take it from there.

    • huffy

wtf you dud joell has dropped nothing but fire the last three years what about nissan honda chevy I agree though his album pretty much sucked except for battle cry that was fire i liked his first album I really was psyched for free agent but it was a boring album i couldnt help but skip tracks

  • mr718

Niggas just dont buy albums anymore unless that artist is new, popular or a legend... How great hip hop artists like Raekwon,Ghostface,Banks,Ortiz,Buddens,Sheek etc struggle to sell when their body of work is 10x better than the avg artist out now... I know time changes and the youth nowadays prefer listening to club records and songs that have no lyrics or meaning but just a catchy hook wit a nice beat but cmon now 9-10 yrs ago songs wit a hot beat and catchy hook still had meaning smh...

  • Leo Goodman

Ortiz is a mediocrity, yes, which is why he had the worst verse on "Apollo Kids" and why barely 1000 people bought his dead BORING second album: garbage beats + whiny voice + corny punchlines does not a "nice" rapper make. Wishing it were otherwise doesn't make it true you fucking NERDS. Listen to Pharoahe Monch and hear what you're missing. Yeah, Joell, give yourself a fucking 'nickname,' that'll change everything.

    • Anonymous

Ah, I guess that's the reason why he gets respect from almost every hiphop legend your faggot ass can name.

    • Anonymous

Joell Ortiz Battle Cry >>> Your favourite W.A.R track and his lyrical skills are beyond Pharaoh Monch too Pharaohe is limited as an MC as proven by his catalogue when compared with Joell Ortiz

  • white milk

no one is buying rae's album! get tha fuk over it. if that makes ppl gay pop fans in your eyes then may someone pour acid in your sockets...

  • Anonymous

everyone needs to go out and cop that raekwon album, support a real hip-hop legend so he can keep putting out ill music

    • andre

I don't give a damn about no record labels as long as the message is right and as long as Hip-Hop artists can express themselves without being restricted.Hip-Hop is the only music genre out there that needs to stay real. Those who want to be brainwashed should stick to listening pop, dance etc. and Drake, Wale should stop calling themselves Hip-Hop artists. Our beloved music genre had its run and now it seems that it's time to return to its underground roots.

    • aa

@Andre Haha illuminati.. Government.. Manipulation..?? You are part of the sheeple. You are no different than the young children. In fact you may have grown into an adult body but your are ignorant. If you bought Raekwon's album you're supporting the elite. What record label is Rae signed to? So, don't act as if you're changing our society in anyway. You are part of the cattle and don't you forget it loser!

    • andre

You can see the Illuminati and the government brainwashing effects on this young kids nowadays. They wanna' listen to Drake, Kid Cudi and all kinds of shit, because they think that everything in the world is just fine, jolly & pink. They can't comprehend the fact that there are a lot of people out there who struggle to survive by any means necessary or fantasize about a better life and the only way to do that is to be involved in all sorts of illegal activities.Or maybe they just love the thrills and respect that comes with that sorts of activities.Or maybe they just wanna' listen to some hardcore beats, raw lyrics and sick delivery not that bear huggin' faggot music.Sometimes I think these young kids don't stand a chance against government manipulation of their taste ranging from music, movies, tv shows...Fuck political correctness this days!

    • JOE6PACKNCGBOR336

bs erbody want a no.1 record that shit means alot

    • da1

You guys are so stupid, no one buys there own cd's. It's not like that money is completely going back to them. Some of that money goes to the retail stores and the government. Plus it would also cost money to pay people to go out in droves, to purposely buy lupe's cd. No one cares about being number 1 on the charts or looking good on billboard. It's all about making profits. You can have a low debut but aslong as you can consistently sell records week by week and eventually sell big, thats all that matters, ie Kesha and Bruno Mars. It's all about profits, labels could care less about anything else.

  • Conselyea Skillman

@ therapbox no dude it doesn't exactly work like that...95% of sales huh? thats really what u think? u think necro made 500k off 50,000 copies huh?...more than kanye and ross u say? not by a long shot...There are expenses, hands in between lets say, that EVERYBODY on every level of the business has to work with...no one drops an album alone, you pay your peoples who pay their peoples and so on and so on...and ur discounting their ringtone money, itunes money, licensing money, and merchandising money (not to mention live performances in the form of TV spots, tours, award shows etc...)all of this generated by ONE ALBUM... PLUS (since u brought them up) the fact is: guys like Ross can go gold (and further with time) and guys like Kanye can go platinum (and further with time)....when ur capable of those numbers u move into a different relationship w/ ur label...Kanye and Ross are the biggest things poppin on Def Jam...period, except for Rihanna and at one point maybe Jeezy...these guys can also go international with all the licensing and merchandising etc. that i mentioned before...and u would be surprised...rappers aren't dumb, these days they shoot videos on a budget, and sometimes even release them on their own outside of the label marketing,(Rick Ross for example)...or lets take Kanye again...he definitely works with other producers/artists but Kanye can contribute a HUGE portion of actual work done on the album...all the writing, producing, arranging and key playing he does by himself is all stuff he no longer has to pay someone else to do, in turn, he spends less of his budget given by his label/deal...Kanye is also big enough he can promote an album almost entirely on his own at this point (as he did w/ the good friday series) just by putting new work out there with his name on it, no label help required, again, saving money on his budget...he can then turn around and sell over a million copies just in the U.S., plus digital sales and blah, blah, blah...plus international physical cd sales etc...not to mention that someone like Kanye has become popular enough in this country that during the summers, and holiday seasons etc. people are still actively buying his old albums...think about it, people still buy Jay-z's, 2pac's, Biggie's and others' old rap albums because they are popular american hip hop albums, they sell for years, sometimes getting remastered and repackaged... see the difference? trust me...i'm not saying underground heads can't make some good money...but being successful on a major label(key word SUCCESSFUL) puts you into a different league of money and opportunity... whoa...commenting system just bugged out on me...probly cuz i just wrote a novel on here lol...my bad for the rant...just trying to drop some knowledge....

@therapbox you sitting their preaching bullshit! shut the fuck up clown. everybody knows what you just said. i am not disagreeing with what you say. its just the fact that this shit is old news and real heads been knowing whats up (notice i said lp as in vinyl) and you sound like a faggot. btw i love necro and i have all of his cds ALL of them and everything that has ever come out on plr and 12"s. morbid/btw empty the clip is one of my most spun singles of all time. BUT i'm pretty sure he does not sell that much.

    • TheRapBox

I don't think yall realize that Raekwon is an independent artists, meaning most of the sale value goes to him. If you are on a major label they take 95% of the sale value, as apposed to Rae taking 95% of sale value. Also, remember that Raekwon only sold to independent stores / Itunes. You will never find his album in Best Buy, or in Walmart... He did that specifically for people diggin in the crates. Necro sells 50k a album roughly, and makes nearly 10 bucks a copp. Thats 500k, more than Rick Ross is doing, more than Kayne.... You guys gotta realize that.

    • EddieMurrrphy

i agree w/ the second anonymous comment. homosexuality is some weird shit in that regard. and when i was about 14 i used to think like that, that it is unnatural and weird. some part of me still thinks like that. it really is unnatural on many levels. but you would have to be retarded to think people would choose to be gay. who the fuck would choose to be gay. look what it does and gets you in the world. you would be labeled a minority and unable to marry and basically be a fag w/ aids lol. but for real who would choose to want to hide their sexuality from their parents and shit, get they ass beat for being queer and be fucked basically in life scared and nervous all the time. that would suck and nobody would choose that shit fool. but sex changes on the other hand, i cant sympathize w/ i dont understand them at all.

    • EddieMurrrphy

i will not argue with you about jesus. for real that is a pretty inspiring figure/symbol. BUT THE TEACHING OF THE BIBLE IS NOT LEGIT, IT IS AN INCREDIBLY ALTERED COLLECTION OF STORIES THAT HAS BEEN ALTERED MANY TIMES THROUGHOUT HISTORY. IT IS A BOOK OF MORALES THAT HAS GOTTEN TOO MANY PEOPLE KILLED IN TOO MANY WARS THROUGHOUT HISTORY. IT HAS BEEN OVERALL THE LARGEST CAUSE OF CONFLICT AMONST HUMANITY SUCH AS THE MAJORITY OF WARS. AND IT ALWAYS CAUSES PEOPLE TO GET RILED UP AND ANGRY AND HATEFUL/SPITEFUL. NOTICE ALL YOU CLOWNS TELLING ME TO BURN IN HELL. IF IT EXISTS WE'LL SEE WHO REALLY ENDS UP THERE PAL. WHEN YOU GIVE DO YOU DO IT FOR THE FEELING OR FOR THE CREDIT?

    • Anonymous

The reason why Christian teachings are against homosexuality is because it is unnatural. It does not procreate. Also, most studies into homosexuality contradict themselves and there is no solid evidence people are born that way.

    • Anonymous

Moron. You just put an entire group of people into one category. Bigot. Have you ever heard of Mother Teresa? You young, dumb, uneducated, ignorant dumb fuck.

Obviously you have been hurt by someone saying they were a christian, otherwise your comments wouldnt be so inflamed. Christianity doesnt mean you are perfect, and some people use the title as banner to hide their bigotry and hate or to further their own agendas. But the TEACHINGS of JESUS are legit.

    • EddieMurrrphy

i figured this would happen. i have never had my asshole touched or touched an asshole (even a female's but hey i'm still young there's still time to cop some coke and pump myself into it).
