Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 9/19/2010

Black Milk cracks the charts, while Trey Songz sells a quarter million first week, as B.o.B. gets 400,000, Rick Ross is close, and Fab's mixtape hits 20,000.

Singer Trey Songz disrupted the charts with his latest, Passion, Pain & Pleasure. Selling just under a quarter-million, Trey may now be Atlantic Records' biggest star in the wake of T.I.'s legal woes. The Petersburg, Virginia native's fourth album features Drake and Nicki Minaj. Eminem's Recovery was right there at #3 this week, behind Trey, gaining some ground after last week's VMA performances.

Drake's Thank Me Later slipped two spots to #15 last week. The Toronto emcee's single "Fancy" gives the sensation a fourth single from his platinum-selling official debut.

Usher's EP, Versus moved one notch to the #16 spot. The supplementary release to this year's Raymond v. Raymond fell just two spots. Drumma Boy, Polow Da Don and Jim Jonsin are amoung the producers on the EP, which cleared 85,000 units. Rick Ross approaches 400,000 units sold with Teflon Don. The Def Jam rapper's fourth official album features work from veterans such as No I.D., DJ Clark Kent and Cee-Lo.

Man, I haven't bought Em's last two albums cause I'm just not that into Hip Hop anymore but 2.6 million when 20% of the country is underemployed and kids nowadays have no problem stealing music and still feeling like good people! It's probably gonna sell 5 million. I don't know if any rapper will ever have as loyal and large of a following as EM.

dude eminem is weird. his ex got pissed at him and almost killed herself. he wrote some stupid song about Mariah Carey and he's not getting laid, he's not getting a hot wife or anything after being in the spotlight for 10 years. he's not that bad of a guy, but the dude is pretty weird overall.

    • jacob

yo dude get a fuckin life. hatin on eminem like you fuckin know hiphop. cuz you sure in the fuck dont if you sayin em aint good and his shits on life support. have you heard recovery? ems a beast bitch, hes real, his musics real, you can feel the shit, aint no reason to be hatin on a fuckin legend. the people who hate on him are jus haters tryna think of an excuse to make themselves feel better.

TRUTH. im laughin at these clowns that back"not afraid" lmao fucking dweebs u like eminem because everyone likes eminem hes a fucking goofball now

  • Mannyfresh

Eminem doesn't sell only because he is white. Eminem sells because he has a huge fan base made possible because the hottest/most respected producer at that time endorsed him to the nth degree. If a white rapper were to join Young money and have wayne endorse him like he did drake, trust me that boy would sell. He has to be able to rap to some degree though.

  • Djdontopper Vega

Atmosphere - To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy. its a coo album!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jason Smith

here is something to consider about eminem. how many people who almost never buy hip-hop always buy eminem? who are these people? i don't want to stir up the race issue but numbers don't lie. that said, he is one of the five dopest MCs out, in my opinion, but he's a much easier sell for "middle america". the only people even close (in terms of widespread popularity)are jay and wayne.

Black Milk and Atmosphere are incalculably better than anyone else on that list. In a just world, the whole Rhymesayers, Def Jux, QN5, Stones Throw and Duck Down crews would be owning the charts...but sadly, people seem to prefer watered down commercial nonsense to good music.

Recovery is one of the dopest hip-hop albums this year, imo the only albums left that could dethrone it are Kanye U J. Cole's. And btw, at this rate Bobby Ray will at least go gold, so that's what's up!

  • SutterKane

People been beating these same arguments about eminem into the ground for closing in on 12 years now,lol........ Recovery aint his best work but its far from bad, truth be told if it wasnt as succesful as it is, people wouldnt nit-pick at it as much, success breeds just as much hate as it does love, I'm sure when Micheal Jackson was dominating in the 80's there were people sitting around saying "God this guy Sucks"...... Didnt stop the history books from writing themselves tho *Shrugs*

  • im right yall wrong

tha white boy deserve every sell he got recovery is off da chain muthafucka the lyrics off of relapse kill damn near every rapper in tha game the songs and concepts werent about shit when em go in the studio and talk about sum fo real Tha whole fuckin rap game get put on hush mouth that white boy a beast and thats why he is tha num 1 selling hip hop artist of the decade besides what any hater gotta say......

    • whitepower!!

next thing you know they will be sayin steve nash is only hype because he is white.....em would eat anyone's fav mc alive!!! fuck the haters... man could give a fuck!!! infact he probly fucking a haters girl right now as we speak...

    • Josh Bechard

nah eminem when he was shady made him what he is today. Relapse was average, and Recovery is corny hahaha songs wit rihanna and him singing, sick taste u trendy queers u probably think kid cudi is an amazing artist. em is a fade

    • JordanM91

co-sign but theres that group thats always gonna deny this...The same ppl that say he went pop, that say he wouldnt be anything without dre, that say he only sells cuz hes white, the ones that say he fell off...they just dont know

  • Josh Bechard

eminem's recovery is so overrated its redic. he got the same flow on everysong, and when comparable to when he was shady he just isnt half of what he is today, he needs to stop rapping. fuck album sales. and rick ross' teflon don is surprisingly good

    • jacob

dude you know nothing. listen to the whole recovery album. he switches the flow alot. and recovery is a bomb album.listen to seduction and cold wind blows or anythang off the album. he goes hard as fuck

    • JordanM91

You just called eminem's cd overrated, and then called rick ross (exposed as a fraud) cd good. umm....

  • Anonymous

hip hop aint dead but we gotta murder that bitch impostor that is tryna take her place!!!

  • da1

I hate when people say that eminem only sells cause he's white. Nooo he just got a crazy fanbase. Does Asher roth sell nooo. Does bubba sparxx sell noo. There are no other white rappers thats selling just him. Why is that. Ummm maybe because he's just good at what he does and just have alot of fans that are willing to buy his album.

    • newman

are we still on the race thing really? its 2010 motha fuckas who gives a fuck what color your skin is!!! quit hatin on em

    • sdsd

@demize i think he was reffering to what he is now. back then he was straight now his psa song wit rihanna and half of his own album is MAD WHACK i think you are trying to live in a world that is racist free and it isnt. Are you going to tell me that white ppl are for the most part accepting to white kids in the hood? but either way i agree proclaiming that he is among with biggie, big l, pun etc gives the white fan bragging rights because flat out he aint even that good!!!!!!

    • dmize-one

@anonymous damn, white boy has got you all fucked up huh?? nowhere above you does it say eminem is the best.. and come on now.. tryin to call him wack just aint right.. no one with a sense in music can call dude wack.. and claiming white people back Em because "it justifies the white fan to be a part of hip-hop without being made fun of" just proves how much of an ignorant, close minded , closet rascist you are.. motherfucker, people (white, black yellow, brown, red)relate to Ems shit, thats why they listen.. not because it justifies listening to hip-hop... last time i checked people are free to listen to whatever music they choose too.. oh i forgot tho, hip-hop is only for blacks and latinos huh?? go play in traffic....

    • Anonymous

em is by far not the best rapper alive! he's ability to with word play is astonishing and his creativity of topics was new back when he first came out but since then he has watered down and is completely whack but his fanbase(who is predominately white) chooses to back him up because it justifies the white fan to be a part of hip hop without being made fun of that is why they dub him best rapper....but it aint so!!!!!!!!!!

    • Spanky

Who cares dude listen to the music enjoy it and have a nice day don't get your oversensitive over-thoughtful panties Ina bunch LOL

  • sharpsh00ter155

deadly medley is my favorite song of 2010. fyi, stop riding rosses dick and stop hatin on him. hes average, not great, but there are better people to dickride and to hate on in music.

  • c red

man that teflon don is the album of the year so far you haterz crack me up all of you all said he wouldent do 100k now hes about to cross 400k next week and well on his way to gold and has only released one offical single he will prob drop two more singles and if one of them takes off he could go plat i bet that would get some panties in a bunch lmao!!!!

  • John-Boy

Looks like Officer Rossifer still won't be getting that platinum plaque. Oh well. He still has 2 maybe 3 albums left before he only sells 10 to 12,000 copies per album. The corrections office is still hiring.

    • Anon1

I don't understand why like 80% of the people who post on DX think album sales is the only way an artist generates revenue. Do people not realize what year it is? Sales don't reflect much but it is interesting to compare previous years to the present numbers. But yal need to realize that sales don't reflect wealth. Lol look how much Dre makes.

    • GStheBest

actually they give out silver plaques at 250k. and yeah 400k is the new platinum because of the declining number of hit albums, wealth in music is being spread out more evenly between artists and now making 500k is equivalent to platinum about 10 years ago, based on chart ranking.
