6LACK has given his fellow DMV native, Wale, his flowers, calling the More About Nothing rapper one of Hip Hop’s “building blocks.”

During an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, 6LACK discussed an array of topics including his third album, self-care, mental health and more. However, at one point in the discussion, the singer praised Wale, who is also featured on his latest project, Since I Have a Lover.

“I know that Wale has always had a way with his words,” he told Lowe. “I know that during times where I was still figuring out myself and figuring out my music … his words spoke to me. Flowers, man. Flowers for him all day long, because everything that we see right now as far as Hip Hop goes has graduated from a specific era.”

The pair also discussed the many Hip-Hop eras and pioneers of those eras, in which he also noted Wale’s impact — as well as that of Drake, Kendrick, and J.Cole.

“As of right now, the current day, that era is Drake. That era is Kendrick [Lamar], that era is Wale, that era is [J. Cole],” he said. “These are some of the building blocks of what we have right now. So flowers for him. It was an honor to be able to reach out to him and just say, ‘I need you for something.'”

6LACK is fresh off the release of his third studio album, Since I Have a Lover, which arrived on March 24. Ahead of its public debut, the Baltimore native dropped the news with an accompanying video for his single of the same name.

The video, directed by Andrew Donoho finds the singer falling from the sky before crashing into a home at the start of the clip.

The video progresses with 6LACK singing the lyrics to the record inside the home that appears to have been engulfed in flames. He finds his way out of the home and levitates onto a street where people are going about their day. Things change towards the end when 6LACK and the people he saw in the street fly up high into the sky.

“‘Since I Have A Lover’, the title track, is the highs of having a healthy love, compressed into song format,” 6LACK said in a statement. “It’s a note to self, that I’m no longer who I was or where I was, and that there’s a bigger purpose starting to reveal itself in the things I create.”

He added: “We are simply pushing love, because it’s needed. The verses are short and serve as a moment of acknowledgment for how I feel, and the chorus is less of a lyric and more of a feeling. It’s an exhale, it’s relief, it’s trust, it’s happiness, it’s surreal.”
