ScHoolboy Q's Interscope debut, Oxymoron, has often been delayed, with the rapper finally submitting the album to TDE just last week.
In an interview with Miss Info at a New York City event sponsored by The FADER and Vitamin Water, Q addressed a slew of topics, including an explanation of the album's delays. "Oxymoron is finished. I finally turned it in," he confirmed. "They probably thought I was having label problems. I just wasn't ready, so I just kept recording and recording and recording."
The Black Hippy rapper went into further detail into his perfectionism. "It's like your baby, so you want to make sure it's perfect. 'Cause this could make you or break you, 'cause I could really fall off. Rappers do it all the time."
"I'm just saying, it could happen if I don't really put that work in," he added. "It's not in my mind that that's what's gonna happen, because I work hard."
Another explanation for the delay, according to Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith, CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment, is that the album was having sample clearance issues.
However, ScHoolboy Q's motivations go beyond just making the best album, but also towards providing for his daughter. "Making sure that she's good. Doing what I have to do before I leave. Gotta leave your mark and treat whatever you got right, and making sure that's taken care of before you go. You're already gone! It's over! You're here, it's over...once you finish grade school, it's over!"
"My mom did it for me by herself. No father figure in my life. She kept the lights on."
Q spoke about his daughter to HipHopDX earlier this year. “She been knowing it since she was born,” he explained. “Every time I walk out the house, she asks, ‘Where you going? The studio?’ It’s the first thing she say. She don’t say, ‘You ‘bout to go with the homies? You ‘bout to get some weed?’ She say, ‘Where you ‘bout to go, the studio?’” He looks up for a moment, his eyes filling up with a sense of honest joy. “I’m kind of proud of that.”
