Yeah Pac liked a lot of the East Coast rappers that he dissed right before his death. He had a song called “Ain’t Nothing Like The Old School” on his “Me Against The World” album. He said “when de la soul was putting pot holes in the game.” He repped a lot of east coast in high regard. He was just involved in all that subliminal dissing that went on between east/west in the 90’s and Pac really didn’t like it, but he didn’t just quiet down from it, he tried to rectify it and also defend himself as now being a west-coast rapper, originally from the east. Just played out badly man. I hate that.
He was paying tribute to them but I heard somewhere that artists like Cool J and perhaps them too felt a sort of way like as if he was implying they were out the game, seeing it that way it kind of makes sense when you read into it like that although pac obviously had no ill intentions with it
let’s add a few facts.. a. pac was from harlem. b. pac felt hatred for the east coast once he was shot. c. treach and pac became friends due to juice. past that naughty and de la are part of native tongues and have had incidents prior to this including a fight involving q tip where he was hit in the eye and received nerve damage from it (the rap group zhiggie and wrex n effect was also involved) so a lot of this does stem from treach relationship with pac but also he did something similar at the source awards to ll and tribe. treacch and pac were hot heads need more examples look nbn taking happy meals full of rats and snakes to their label office and releasing them. or the all out fight that treach and uncle Vinnie had a few years ago.
I love the video. Nice piece of hiphop history. Best article/video I’ve seen here or any rival forum in awhile. I also wondered how the Tupac/fugees beef started I think when we ride on our enemies is another great Tupac diss song
Great wrap up of key history homie, salute! BUT…. you are missing a key KEY part of this whole beef issue, De La went on record during an interview with Vibe / Source and mentioned Pac by name referencing his beef with Bad Boy like it was some sucka shit and then TuPac released the hounds on they ass!! They fronting now like they aint talk reckless about a real hitter. Bottom line they was clean cut guys who kept their nose out of trouble then all of a sudden they stepped into it like no one would address them on some street life just because. they poked the bear and got the claws
The De La Spul song Stakes is High itself from that album, is aimed directly at 2 Pac, however some of that songs lyrics took on a new meaning after 2 pac died. Yet De La had made Fun of Gangster rappers back from Me myself and I, on to the song, Afro Connections at High Five, up through the Mindstate as noted here, to Stakes is High, De La was trying to fight the tide of gangster rap for conscious music, yet after 2 Pac died De La Soul fell back respectfully and would never say I told you so, and so today it’s all love, the Fugees definatly fired a direct shot at 2 pac with the posse cut Cowboys on the Score.
Love these breakdowns Justin! You should cover the Method Man VS Ice Cube from the late 90’s that NO ONE has spoke about. They both released albums on the same day and it was straight up dis tracks for the whole of the 2 albums. *Ice Cube – War and Peace, and Meths – Tical 2000*
Best breakdown ever! I always knew they had beef, but I had no idea why. Thanks, Justin! True hip-hop head. By the way, “Watch Yo Mouth” is crazy, for those of you that haven’t heard it.

“Like them west coast kids who be throwing up signs,
I hate a busta unless his name is Busta Rhymes”
De la Soul – Dinninit – Stakes is High
This line at the time of the Stakes is High release would have been edgy.

Justin is fucking incredible on camera. Someone might think about swiping him up for a bigger platform.
