This was actually good and somewhat accurate but Drake is being a little underappreciated here but at least, there is acknowledgement of his lyrical skills. I mean If You’re Reading This, So Far Gone What a Time to Be alive aren’t even mentioned but Kendrick’s Untitled Unmastered and Section 80 are highlighted. J.Cole isn’t on the same level of Drake and Kendrick to me and last thing I’ll say is Biggie Smalls is really to be credited for all this and should have been mentioned along with Jay-Z and 2Pac. Biggie created JAy-Z and Drake’s lane IMO
Just because Jay Z uses credited writers and spits biggies lyrics better than Big doesn’t mean he doesn’t have lyrical skills. He at least has to know what is dope or not lyrically! Look at Nas, his mature album didn’t get any play but King HOV’s 4:44 is universally praised. The difference between being broke and a rap god.
Do you read liner notes? Because every Jay Z album has had credited writers that were not people that composed beats or are you DaAlternativeTruth?
Hold up…
I’m not a fan of Mac Miller and Jay-Z will always be a better rapper in terms of lyrics, sales and cultural influence.
But you can’t call Mac Miller out for using his relationship with Ariana Grande to augment his career and give Jay a pass when he’s been rolling Beyonce out for 15 years.
Dude also gained a fair bit of crossover appeal by appearing on guest spots for charting pop and R&B artists. He ties himself to the flavor of the moment and has had continua success that way.
Entire albums with R Kelly, Collision Course and constant Kanye assists. Ain’t hip-pop, just pop af.
But even before he was successful he was willimg to go straight pop (Hawaiian Sophie?) to get till.
I like most of his albums and I think he has played the game smarter than anyone who came before him. But by these metrics Jay-Z has been as pop as Michael Jackson since 2002.
This breakdown is accurate for all three. I’ll say this, that MC Eiht and DJ Premier album is probably the dopest album to come out of the west this year. I recently bought it and have been playing that album almost daily! That MC Eiht album is too hip hop to get recognition it deserves..echoing Murs’ point in the breakdown about hip hop success and radio play vs “hip pop.”
Why is it that hip hop is the only art form subject to these discussions. Don’t get me wrong, wack is wack and there is plenty to go around. But is Will Smith a comedic or dramatic actor? In rock music Corey Taylor can go from hard core with Slipknot to soft as fuck with Stone Sour and it is applauded as showing range. I’m not a Drake fan but at least he is spitin, there are rhyme schemes and lyrical intention. In my opinion Cole and Kendrick are dope, regardless of sales or how they were obtained. With so much mumble bullshit rap and garbage why can’t it be a two lane theory… wack and not wack
Loved the talk. Great to see Drake get the props he deserves. Too many people dismiss him for being pop and never talk about his excellent lyricism and flawless flow.
Shut the fuck up
murs a fuck boy. he kissed a man in his video! sucka!
Kendrick Kamar: The New Tupac
J Cole: The New Nas
Drake: The New Britney Spears
Murs deep throating drake with this one.

He has no lyrical skills. He doesn’t write

So this is what Jay does inbetween making trash albums for white people that pay for music streaming.
Jay Z doesn’t use writers. Did you even listen to hiphop?

Good breakdown Murs. Nas and Common are two of my favorites of all time. Where would you put them?
