J. Cole: Nas Without Illmatic

    Let’s break it down.

    1. Drake is more like this generations Nelly. I can’t see the comparisons with Jay-Z whatsoever. It’s like saying Adele is like Michael Jackson because they are the best selling artist, which is why these kind of comparisons are dumb. I normally enjoy these in depth breakdowns, but not this one. Sorry.

    2. Lyrically, J. Cole is pure trash. His rhymes are simple, his delivery is boring and his flow rarely matches the beat. Give me a trap rapper who is good at rapping over J. Cole, an “artists” who can barely master the fundamentals of rapping.

Content wise, J Cole is a starting point for a generation that never truly thought before. The reason people prefer J. Cole over real conscious rappers like Kendrick, Common or Black Thought is because they are not use to complex lyrics. Cole makes content for the diluted mind. There is nothing wrong with that but don’t insult my intelligence by saying he is one of the greatest thinkers of our generation. Nothing Cole has said or done is deep at all. But I guess if you don’t know how to swim three feet of water seems deep.

      1. Yeah he’s not on a Kendrick or common or Lupe deep at all. This album was just ok, had some good songs but I don’t think he executed the way he wanted to. Or if he did then he’s just not good enough to try the complex stuff that ppl claim he’s good at. Some good verses for sure but it’s not like he’s blowing anybody’s mind. I find he’s just good enough at most aspects of rap but not great in any.

        1. Im not sure if this album is for you. For the 25+ it is about that real life you go through. This album is not traditionally structured. Its a muted and dark narrative with a sort of lo fi sound. Most of listeners who love trap or high bass sounds or ignorant shit may not vibe to this

          1. Yes, Lupe fiasco, jay-z, Nas, Eminem, logic, Kendrick are trap music and do not represent the essence of hip hop. That’s why I listen to wack rappers like that but can’t understand j.cole. I just want those bangers because apparently I’m under 25. Your statements make you look arrogant, ignorant, straight up uppity lol. This album did not live to the hype, he put a diss track out and couldn’t back it up with a classic . Takeover was ill, blueprint was legendary. Ether was ill, Stillmatic was great. Both were amazing tracks yet not even the best on their albums. That’s how you back up a diss track, make the album fire so ppl know you’re legit.

            1. Im uppity? Lol. I didnt know you could be penalized for speaking intelligently. But mess with the artists you mentioned. I take it you like alot of aggressiveness in hip hop. I love ether more than takeover. But thats not Coles MO. He is going down as one of the greats but he isnt your taste and its ok

            2. You once again assume things about me which actually says more about you. The uppity comment isn’t because you speak intelligently, it’s because you look down on someone and say they don’t understand the “essence of hip hop” because they disagree with your view on the album. I like Cole, he’s just not that great or creative or as deep as people like yourself claim he is. But you do you, I’ll do me. Lupe and logic indicate my love for aggression apparently, more ignorance. And the point about the ether and takeover is they. Other involve shit talking that was backed up by legit albums that included amazing tracks like “one mic” and “u don’t know”, tracks Cole could never come close to.

            3. What are you talking about?!! You are the one assuming. Nas is my number one MC of all time. Without Nas there would be no Cole. I have all all Lupes albums except lasers. Just because i think Cole is one of the greats doesnt mean that i consider others great or legendary! Nas is legendary! Common is legendary! Im from where Logic is drom and i have both of his cds. Logics favorite MC is J cole!! Im just saying. But hey you just do you but imma do me lol. I think assumptions were on both sides. Its all good!

            4. I’m talking about what you said to ghost and to my first comment. I never made any assumptions about any of your preferred choices. You attacked someone else’s intelligence on hip hop, I stepped to you, you claim this album is not for me and listed the people who it is for. But I am over 25, and don’t like trap music that much so you were wrong there. I said your comments make you look uppity, arrogant and ignorant (never said you were), you came back with I only like aggressive shit. Assumptions were made by one person, so it’s not all good. Dont try the “we were both wrong” bs, take the L. Peace out

    3. Weak breakdown I must say. How is that Cole is meant to be the subject matter yet you spend more time discussing hov and nas. If there’s a comparison to be made between the two compare how Cole relates to his contemporaries vs how nas compared to his, and end it there. Do sales and critical acclaim mean anything anymore, no, not in a piracy generation, so why bring it up. Every one of Em’s albums was completely panned or given a 3 star rating at the time. Every one of those publications that put out a rating proved how irrelevant and outright biased they all are by going back to rerate all his early albums years later to give them a proper critique. Why, because of the standing Em has held over time. How do you trash one of the supposed GOAT’s entire catalogue, yet accept his position in the game. Point being, it doesn’t matter what critics thought of Cole’s last album, give it a few more years and a few more well received releases by fans and they will rerate his albums the same way. Believe it.

How anyone can question Cole’s artistry baffles me. The man in entirely involved in his own production. He crafts the songs he writes, he doesn’t just pay some big name producers and rap over a beat that gets emailed around. Show me footage of HOV or Drake producing their own music. These aren’t artists, they’re rappers, and weak ones in my opinion. You want to point out Hov’s line about 1 classic every ten year, Hov can eat that line cuz he only has 2 real albums himself (Blueprint and Black Album).

Some of the strongest artists, and the word ARTIST gets stressed here, are Cole, Kendrick and Krit. But each have their own lane, and differing recognition. But people listening to hip hop need to stop with the CLASSIC moniker. Deeming an album classic or trash in the first few hours of its release shows we should not be graced with your opinions because they’re premature. All any of these people are interested in is being some of the first to express an opinion. Keep them to yourself, enough with the trolling, and either enjoy the music or move on.

    4. Future is the evolution of Lil Wayne?? Possibly the dumbest thing I’ve read on here all week. Future isn’t even a rapper, nor does he have the success or worldwide appeal of Lil Wayne nor has he ever spit a punchline or taken over a track as a guest appearance.. I’m not even a Wayne fan, but the ludicrous-ness of that statement couldn’t go unmentioned.

    5. Str8 retarded. Missed it by a mile on every single one. These new dudes don’t even come close to these legends. With that said, it is a new era of rap. Let these new dudes do their thing and be who they are. Quit comparing because there is no comparison at all.

    6. And when are the cut offs? When Pac and Biggie were living or after they died?who are Shawn Carter’s contemporaries really? Not Tupac, not Nas,neither even Biggie.Because at about the time that he became really noticed,Pac was dead,Biggie was dead, and Jay was not the top seller at that point coz DMX was topping the charts, and then there was Eminem. There was another guy called Coolio, yeah.Maybe Cole could be Jay Z,because the earlier Jay Z’s style wasn’t refined,he was trying to hard to sound like a cross between Biggie and Nas.But atleast Cole is original.Drake?maybe he can be compared to Ja Rule, who was selling like hot cakes under the rap banner when actually he wasn’t even a rapper.Kendric, could be Nas,good but underrated, constatly moving us and forcing us to take notice.Lil Wayne murdered hip hop…it was 50 Cents first then Wayne nailed the final nails on hip hop’s coffin.

      1. Jay steps in the booth, raps what’s in his head in one take and creates classics without writing. Drake has dozens of dudes writing for him has still has ZERO classics. I fail to see the comparison.

        1. Take Care was classic to me, but he does have mad ppl writing his shit obviously. Jay never seemed to have ghostwriters plus he made Blueprint. Two different era homie, comaparisons arent needed for real. This generation is pretty light comapred to the previous.

    7. Drake is not even close to HOV comparisons! Nothing in his catalogue comes close to anything Jay ever made. Even as much as Drake bangs out the female joints, nothing in his catalogue can come close to Song Cry.

      1. dude below go it right with the Drake Ja Rule comparison. Both sing songs about bitches, and then try to thug it out when they want to switch it up. Both pop, both sold, both far from the best in their class. It’s never gonna be another Nas and Jigga, just like it was never another NWA or Run D.M.C. Legends are legends for a reason. Hold this L DX

    8. A bunch of idiots work for Hiphopdx. Gravity is undeniable. Time being relative is undeniable. J Cole being Nas is very deniable, the majority of the comment section is denying it because its an OPINION you morons. Let me get this straight, Nas straight up told Cole to his face that Cole dropped some garbage, Cole got in his feelings and made an entire song about how he let Nas down…and now he’s just as good as Esco???? GTFOH. J. Cole has zero classics. “Name a rapper that I ain’t influenced” Nas impacted the entire culture was his discography, don’t pretend like Illmatic is the only gem he dropped. Very very stupid video

    9. First time I came here in a long ass time.
      Why?
I got this email from hip hop dx regarding this.
Justin Hunte yous a bitch ass nigga for trying to compare this nigga to the God.
Fucking puto yo moms shoulda swallowed you.

    10. Nas without Illmatic still has: It Was Written, God’s Son, Stillmatic, Life Is Good. But just for facts sake, he DOES have Illmatic. There is NO logical comparison than can be made between Nas and J. Cole.

    11. Who wrote this. Jay never put out music relentlessly. Hov in his prime selectively timed the release of his music which is why people still look forward to his music today. Kendrick is nothing like Pac and to compare Jay Cole to Nas is totally upserd. All the rappers above are nothing remotely similar to each other which is why fans are drawn to them. Oh yeah, if Future is the evolution of lil Wayne, we have big problems ahead.

        1. He doesn’t know HOV was touching everything even without permission he hopped on that Juvenile “Ha” shit quick as fuck..lol

      1. Released an album every year from 1996-2003, also had best of both worlds early 2000s, unfinished business in 2004 plus collision course around that time too. Then 06,07,09. Now he’s older he slowed a lot. But before that he was everywhere, ppl have short memory or are too young to remember nowadays

      2. Jay dropped album after album, year after year. There was no one as prolific as Jay. The only selective timing he had was, “Oh it’s a new year?? Time to drop another album.” His catalogue may have been better though had he taken more time between releases.

    12. Justin Hunt is clearly a Hov fan. Please tell me what Jay Z album stands the test of time in his first 5. Maybe reasonable doubt? HOV is super nice, but has put out a gang of awful albums full of commercial tracks. Nas first 4 damn sure better than Hov first 4

      1. Stop. Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint and the Black Album are undeniable classics. Outside of a few misfires, Vol.1 and American Gangster are right there too. For Nas, Illmatic, IWW and Stillmatic are classics as well, with LIG and God’s son not far. Not many rappers have 1, let alone 3+, so we don’t need to decide between them, they’re both greats in their own right…

    13. I think Kendrick and Cole are more like Kweli and Mos because they’re friends and they could do an album like kweli and Mos, and that album was great and fans were hoping for a sequel which won’t happen because of the mindstate of Yasiin Bey a.k.a Mos Def. Album wise I think they are their merit because how they released them.

    14. comparing this generations rappers to yesterdays mc’s is bullshit bc the world is different now so heads are gna be goin thru different shit, n that’ll ultimately show in the music even for glorified pop rappers like drake j cole etc, u gotta have perspective hiphop is 10000% more profitable nowadays compared 2 the 90s, plus modern rappers spend too much time tellin their twitter fanbase what they ate for fuckin lunch lol smh

    15. J Cole on his best day comes nowhere close to Nas, I don’t care how much people try to pump that. Cole is a really good rapper in a generation full of garbage ones, let’s not overly celebrate above average just because of that…

      1. You can smoke dope and just right an article about some bs that ran thru your head for a split second. Thats why I hate this fuckin site
All you did was try to berate NAS down to J. Cole level. Naw fuck that!!! Cole will never be on NAS level EVER!! With a capitol E so go take your wack ass new-gen wanna compare any half ass whoever is poppin @ the moment to people who actually did something for the culture and left and impact for generations Cole never did that he might one day but dude got 2 albums NAS got like 10+ so your fuckin trippin
        -Peace!

    16. Also love how the article doesnt even have the writers name
Im assuming a small asian child in bangkok wrote this in some internet cafe for 2 dollars and twenty cents(American) Wick Wick Wack!
      Hahahahahahaha

    17. YO, Im 36 – born late 1980 – so I think Im an X-Millennial hybrid.

      I fuck with Cole
      I fuck with Nas
      I fuck with the Cole / Nas = 2016 / 1996 comparison.

Nas was the most insightful and honest artist of his generation – short of Tupac.
Cole is the most insightful and honest artist of his generation – short of Kendrick.

      #LongLive HipHop.

    18. I can see the similarities, however I think Nas is still more lyrical by far (shit, just look at the ‘Nas Album Done’ from the khaled album as recent proof). That said I’m a big Cole fan. He’s doing music with a message, radio jingles be damned.

Now if Cole comes out and marries Kehlani, or some 1 hit wonder chick, who then takes half his shit….. this comparison gets a little better.

    19. Why would he need an Illmatic when he has FHD or 4 your eyez only? There are similarities, the new album is short, cohesive with the best production around these days. It’s a pleasure to listen to it. BTW i was blown away into oblivion when i first heard that 2pac flow in “deja vu”, The Game could learn a thing or two.

      1. FHD and 4 Your Eyez are nowhere near Illmatic. FHD wasn’t even rated as the best album of 2014 anywhere. And lyrically Nas is light years better than Cole.

        1. To be fair, its kind of hard to top one of the most influential hiphop albums of all time (Illmatic). And yeah Nas in his prime is way better than Cole right now. But Cole is still nice.

          1. I agree. Cole is nice and doesn’t need to make an illmatic. But, he lacks that definitive, unanimous classic that everyone can agree. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Liquid Swordz, The Chronic, Blueprint, Doggystyle, Late Registration, Ready to Die, Food & Liquor. These are all albums that at least 90% of people can agree on are classic. Cole is missing that. That’s what he need.

    20. These blog writers really believe that they are gonna re-write the history of rap. They will do anything to protect their own relevancy (lemme dick ride all the Poppin rappers so that I stay in their good graces for the purposes of my position). However, looking at this thread the people have spoken… It’s a resounding HELL NO. Cole is not in league with Nas.

Cole is dope in an era where practically nobody is dope. Of course he stands out. Not saying I think he’s wack, just adding some perspective.

Nas RULED during a time when being lyrically onpoint was the goal for 85% of emcees. Where is Cole’s verbal intercourse? Where’s his Eye For An Eye? … Where is his “If I Ruled The World”?

I appreciate Cole and I respect what he represents. Very few if any gimmicks and a solid pen game. However…. He is not on Nas level. I’m proud of u guys on this thread. LET THESE MUFUKKAS KNOW… JUST CAUSE U WRITE ABOUT RAP FOR A WEBSITE DOESNT MEAN YOUR OPINION WONT BE CHALLENGED.

    21. JCole is this generation’s Nas? GTFOH… Nas created a classic in his debut album, Cole is still waiting after numerous projects! Cole is nice, but he hasn’t put together an album that can be considered on any “classic” lists

    22. Nigga said Nas did the mafioso shit cuz of Jay. No he didn’t. It was cuz of Cuban Linx. Everyone got the mafioso shit from that, HHDX needs to stop riding Jay’s dick he didn’t do shit.
