As he preps his upcoming project Conflicted: A Tragic Love Story, Queens MC Gist The Essence has shared the visuals for “Overstand,” which was executive produced by Tha Jerm (of SOI). It touches on the current cultural climate and personal battles Gist The Essence faces every day.

In the song, Gist The Essence’s thoughts are enveloped in his own mortality — thoughts fueled by the unjust killings of Black people by those entrusted to protect them.

“Following what feels like countless unjust deaths of unarmed black men that has come to light in the past few years, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how precious time is, how fast it moves, and how important it is to have a sense of urgency to leave a mark, especially if you’re a black man and you’re trying to change the fortune of your family name,” Gist tells DX. “This record and music video was the byproduct of those thoughts.”
