HipHopDX Premiere: Los Angeles-based, Louisiana-bred rapper Cliftun puts his raw lyrical prowess on display on his new album Where Is My Mind?, which carries 14 new tracks packed with tales of tragedies, dreams and nightmares as he comes to grips with the excessive partying he uses to self-medicate and cope with it all. After his father was murdered in 2010, he sought comfort in substances as a way to numb the indescribable pain. The album is glimpse into what he’s been going through since the horrible incident.
“[It’s] a journey in which he loses his mind in attempts to find it again,” as explained in a press release. “Around his 27th birthday, he realized he didn’t want to end up like his artistic role models—Kurt Cobain,Jean Michel Basquiat—by letting his vices and depression get the best of him. He tries to baptize his brain in hopes of ridding himself of party demons, so called friends and fallen angels disguised as pretty girls. His ability to blend styles and genres is in rare form here as he spills his creative guts over dark trap and grunge inspired beats with an abstract, imaginatively gritty flow.”
Beginning with “M.O.T.H.” and culminating with “Weak End,” Cliftun puts it all out on the line, especially on “Dad.” Listen above.
