Southern rappers seemingly spring up a dime a dozen these days but when an artist cites influences such as Master P and Nelly, the bar for breaking through the regional mold is set to a very high standard.
Such is life for the canvas Mykell Vaughn is drawing his inspiration from. Originally hailing from Kansas City and now sending shockwaves throughout the Atlanta scene, his newest record, “Run It,” exhibits an attention to detail to melody most new jacks looking to score instantaneous success will never learn.
Backed by his partner-in-rhyme Lil Stl, the marathon sprint to stuff Ben Franks in designer bags doesn’t feel like an exercise in futility as the song is so damn catchy. And, of course, anyone who thinks it’s best to walk “to the money” simply doesn’t want to get paid in this capitalistic rap society.
Mykell Vaughn not only has pen game, his delivery appears to be tailor-made for crafting hits for public consumption (like say, visiting a strip club). His previous records, the ode-to-Gucci Mane “What Would Guwop Do” and sizzling “Bend it Ova” (alongside TK & Cash) gave clear signals to the lane the budding artist wants to steer his whip in.
