The one, the only DJ Premier is known to lend his legendary production touch on several alternative acts such as Maroon 5, Janet Jackson, Yuna, Lion Babe, and of course, Christina Aguilera, and he knocks one out of the park with Wantagh, New York native, Torii Wolf, on her new single, “1st.” The fleeting lovelorn record employs Rakka Iriscience’s from Dilated Peoples’ “Good As Gone” in masterfully Premo fashion, and leaves zero doubt that Hip Hop has a place in all genre bases.
When there’s smoke, there’s fiyah © Fizzy Womack and Premo will be manning the boards for Wolf’s entire debut album, Flow Riiot.
“Torii has such a weird, wicked style,” Premier tells Pitchfork via press release. “It’s just very left field—reminiscent of a Björk or something like that. She is so unique and versatile; she writes, sings, and is an accomplished guitarist and drummer. But image-wise, there is no comparison. Subject-wise, Torii is in a whole different place.”
Listen to “1st” up above and look out for the rest of Flow Riiot later this year.
