Sippin’ on Some Syrup aka Sippin’ On Some Sizzurp may not be the song that got Three 6 Mafia an Oscar (that goes to “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp”), but it is undoubtedly one of their most popular and defining records. Released on February 6th, 2000 as the second single for the group’s fourth studio album, When The Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1, the song featured Three 6’s Juicy J and DJ Paul as well as guests UGK and Project Pat. Paul and Juicy provided the production, sampling Marvin Gaye’s 1978 Is That Enough for some synths and a keyboard instrumental. The song helped propel its LP into being Three 6’s first platinum album and also holds the unique distinction of being DJ Paul’s favorite Three 6 album. Lord Infamous’ untimely passing in December of last year meant that he couldn’t join the newly formed Da Mafia 6ix (Three 6 minus Juicy J) on their current tour, but DJ Paul vowed to take Infamous’ casket to every tour date. Give this classic a play and take yourself on a trip back to the streets of an early aughts Memphis, Tennessee.
