Granted, his beat often sound very similar, but his production stays true to hiphop by using samples and are actually some of the most well-constructed beats around. Cole composes his own shit around a sample (in a similar fashion to Kanye) and I respect that. Cole’s beats are amazing.

But what about songs like Dollar and a Dream 3, Lost Ones, Lights Please, Rise and Shine, God`s Gift, Never Told, Breakdown and Sideline Story those songs are no different from the stuff on his mixtapes.

That depends on how you define a flop. I think I see where you are coming from. A gold debut album in this economy is far from a flop. He did go soft on the album though and didn’t give us the J.Cole we all heard on his mixtapes.
Yeah you can say that for the singles on the album tho (Can`t Get Enough, Work Out, Mr Nice Watch). But what about songs like Dollar and a Dream 3, Lost Ones, Lights Please, Rise and Shine, God`s Gift, Never Told, Breakdown and Sideline Story those songs are no different from the stuff on his mixtapes.
Honestly bro, I had this discussion with my brother over a week ago and he didn’t really care for J Coles album at first but he started liking it over time. I thought it was a good album. I like Mr Nice Watch but lights please, cole world, nobodys perfect,

It’s not even his fault that his album didn’t sell many copies..plus, Gold is the new platinum these days with downloading an what not.. his label in the end makes the decisions for which songs get cut an get put out thats why you should stay independent.. if more artists did it that way they wouldn’t have 3 good songs then the rest of the album sounding like wtf?! basically the label only cares about the album sales.. whatever they think will sell they put out.. not taking into account that
his loyal fans want to hear what he is best at. They want the masses to buy the album.. thats the industry.

i think its mainly his beats. this is my favorite beat hes spit over but most of them are too soft
J coles only problem is all his music sounds the same i hope he grows as an artist and stays around…….he should keep his message but try different sounding beats hes a great artist the mood he puts you in is almost depressing…….if he adds the real feel good music then hes unstoppable
