@ what. im guessinv you probably dont write/produce music as if you did, u might be aware how hard it is to right effective popular music without following the standard arrangement rules of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-etc. The song is very unconventional but yet effectively catchy like any popular song despite its weird arrangement. thats what makes Drake a great artist. His songs are very strangely structured for popular songs. He really baffles anyone who makes music. tbh, saying he is just standard is absurd. there has never in history really been an artist who has reached his success and been just “standard”. The nature of success suggests an artist/who ever is successful must be an anomoly
You’re reading WAY too much into a simple love ballad. This is the most conventional song ever made. Its structure and arrangement is not strange or weird at all, it’s your standard mainstream song that we’ve heard a million times before. It’s verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge like you said. And anything with a repetitive chorus is considered catchy, doesn’t always make it good. None of Drake’s songs baffle anyone in music since its standard mainstream music and it’s an imitation of other artists. You want unconventional strange music, go listen to any of Kendrick’s albums. Those songs aren’t structured like anything in mainstream rap. Many artists have achieved success by doing things that are standard, Drake is one of them. An artist or anyone achieving success is not an anomaly, it’s normal. Success does not mean innovation.
@ what.. if thats the case, then name the chorus- where is it? cuz i cant. usually a chorus will double down on drums etc and will accenuate itself in an obvious manner. cuz u claimed this I went to rapgenius to see how they had it chosen and even they didnt identify a chorus in a so-called “standard” song. to take an artist like beyonce and relegate her to a voice without singing is an odd choice in itself. ok here we go: kendrick vs drake as if this guy Drake introduced to the mainstream and Drake himself are somehow diametrically opposed ….ok….cool..it is what it is… been a big fan of Kendrick since Overly-Dedicated and agree Kendrick lamar is a great talent and very capable. Cartoons and Cereal or ADHD are awesome examples of him taking a completely unusual approach yet making it still oddly listenable. when those
songs came out, they sounded like revolutions… but tbh, his latest work i find excellent/great to listen to but not as risky as his pre-Aftermath work. I grew up listening to funk/soul..which is great but he borrows very heavily from that era making his music much easier to digest. his latest reminds me of like the best Roots album ever made or like Daft Punk’s last album (both of which I like alot so its no diss) but it doesnt hit u in the juggular like “WTF is this?”…..I think you always need to be a little skeptical when all the critics get an album right away….influential great music is rarely universally praised to start.. most of the songs on Kendrick’s latest are kinda predictable arrangement-wise: intro, 16 bar verses, chorus, verse, chorus etc. Sure, lots of great lyrics etc and he is definantly an amazing talent but personally, i have felt a lil disappointed since he joined Aftermath as he clearly has the ability to break all the rules and distinguish himself as a level higher but he appears to take a more conventional path than i expected. He is still breaking rules but its very digestable to me. Still great album and more consistent than any album Drake has dropped but less risky than Drake’s work, in general. To me, his last album sounds like it could have came out in 93. It would have been a great album in 93 but it still sounds too easy to follow whereas this Drake song and say “Cartoons and Cereal” sound new, fresh and weird. It consistently takes me like 5!listens to really get what Drake is doing whereas Kendrick these days, its like two listens and thats it: my opinion never changes. i like it but i never go back and listen to it again. anyways, whatever….despite all the reflexive Drake-hate…as time goes on, you will see it will be like debating Michael Jackson vs Prince. Cuz both these guys are going down as legends but I do believe Drake will be much more appreciated later (this happens to a lot of the very best most influential artists) whereas Kendrick is already universally loved.
“if thats the case, then name the chorus- where is it? cuz i cant.” The chorus is obviously the phrase “Can I.” “I went to rapgenius to see how they had it chosen and even they didnt identify a chorus in a so-called “standard” song.” Rap Genius isn’t always accurate. “to take an artist like beyonce and relegate her to a voice without singing is an odd choice in itself” There’s nothing odd about what Beyoncé did in the song. This isn’t the first time she didn’t sing on a song. “kendrick vs drake as if this guy Drake introduced to the mainstream and Drake himself are somehow diametrically opposed .” Drake never introduced Kendrick to the mainstream, Kendrick did that himself. “his latest work i find excellent/great to listen to but not as risky as his pre-Aftermath work.” GKMC & To Pimp A Butterfly are risky records. GKMC, he told an entire story instead of making an album full of “bangers” and TPAB mixed jazz, funk, and soul; what artist now is doing that in the mainstream? “I think you always need to be a little skeptical when all the critics get an album right away” Not really. “most of the songs on Kendrick’s latest are kinda predictable arrangement-wise: intro, 16 bar verses, chorus, verse, chorus etc. ” No, they aren’t. Wesley’s Theory, For Free, u, Complexion, etc. “but personally, i have felt a lil disappointed since he joined Aftermath as he clearly has the ability to break all the rules and distinguish himself as a level higher but he appears to take a more conventional path than i expected.” He’s not taking a conventional path. ” He is still breaking rules but its very digestable to me. Still great album and more consistent than any album Drake has dropped but less risky than Drake’s work, in general” Drake’s work isn’t risky at all. ” whereas this Drake song and say “Cartoons and Cereal” sound new, fresh and weird.” There’s nothing weird about this Drake song, it’s the same shit we’ve heard from him a million times before. “It consistently takes me like 5!listens to really get what Drake is doing whereas Kendrick these days, its like two listens and thats it:” You have a terrible mind. How do you instantly understand Kendrick’s complex lyrics, but not Drake’s simplistic lyrics? Kendrick’s lyrics are full of layers and detail while Drake’s are simplistic ABC shit. “both these guys are going down as legends but I do believe Drake will be much more appreciated later (this happens to a lot of the very best most influential artists) whereas Kendrick is already universally loved.” No. Only Kendrick will be a legend while Drake won’t. The most influential artists are appreciated immediately.
@What? Just bodied this whole argument. Agree 100% with everything he said. Drake is nothing special…he’s very orthodox and traditional. Nothing about him screams “risk”. I expect every song of “his” to sound the same or embody the same structure as the one before it.
Nigga no, lol. His credibility isn’t ruined, even though he used a few written lines, that isn’t new to hip hop and other rappers just as big as him have done it before Its not special, you guys are just being haters. It isn’t okay when -drake- does it, but let whatever rapper you think is better than him do it. Then its fair game. FOH.
If being on a track with one of the hugest stars in music right now is having no hiphop credibility then fuck hip hop lol. $$$$$$$$$
Drake fans are always internet tough and completely delusional. lol Okay ghostwriters are okay and others have done it. Okay, then name one artist that used reference tracks? I’ll wait… 😉
Q didn’t write this one. I could sense this one in Drake’s soul. He meant every word and he has a strong desire for Queen B. I do too. Beyonce I love you. Sorry J
this song is amazing
Good Job Quentin!!!
Quentin’s work is implacable. Such a phenomenal talent.
pretty cold..
Drake is clearly her baby daddy NOT GAY Z. The kid looks 100% like Drake
Because you were there right? In the bed huh lol
how do yall got yall real pics on here?
say what you will, Drake is innovative. he takes risks.
What risks? Everything he does is safe and standard. He is not innovative.

Jay-Z uses reference tracks. Look up Lucifer on youtube with Kanye coaching him. How many times do you have to be disproven?

Idk what the issue is…i thought it was pretty cool. Mellow joint. Nothing special, but cool
Aubrey (aka Drake) is the male version of Beyonce. So this is the perfect match up, of two vastly overrated musical acts
Utter crap
This song makes me feel all types of feels
I would have liked a little more though
