Equipped with a new label and a new outlook the Sunz of Man return to a hip-hop world desensitized to the onslaught of commercialism we have to bear. The same qualities that once made them strong may now be their commercial downfall. These Wu-Tang disciples, now without Killah Priest, deliver a refreshing alternative to the norm. Beginning with a RZA intro and ending with Method Man is a good foundation. The inclusion of Ghostface Killah on the title cut doesn’t hurt either.
Can today’s hip-hop climate weather the storm of five- percent knowledge? Is there still a market for these teachings? Time will tell, as the industry hasn’t been too kind to past philosophers (Poor Righteous Teachers, Killarmy, X-Clan, etc). In addition, will the listeners take heed or will they do the usual and distance themselves from hip-hop with a substance. The beats definitely weren’t made for the clubs or the radio. However, Saviors Day featuring Ghostface Killah is a slow tempo banger to nod to. It leaves the jewel, ìÖyoung broads became strippers when they used to be queens. A lot of us became sleepwalkers chasin a dream.î
Bankstas featuring RZA is one of the album’s highlights as its slow nodding beat allows them to slow down their flows to a decipherable tone. On this cut they ìroll like Shaft not Pacino.î RZA kills it with the gem, ìfuckin the President’s daughter, resident out in Florida. Platinum plaques on the corridor.î True hip-hop heads will definitely appreciate the lyrics laid down. The only downfall, as previously mentioned, is the messages may be lost within the same styles that once set them apart.
The surprise of the album is when labelmate MC Eiht comes through on People Change. Remember him? He’s also on D3 Entertainment. Upon listening I have wonder why Method Man was only given an outro skit. Can I get sixteen from Meth? Meth would’ve given them that push to radio and opened up the group’s fan base. It’s worth a listen. Although it doesn’t contain any groundbreaking material it does maintain a level of consistency throughout. Saviors Day is coming.
