Big K.R.I.T. – 4eva N A Day (Mixtape Review)

When Big K.R.I.T.’s Def Jam debut was set on the proverbial back burner last Fall due to sample clearances, the Meridian, Mississippi native took it upon himself to preserve his stature with one more mixtape before Live From The Underground surfaces this summer. Conceptually, 4Eva N A Day offers the listener a 24-hour window into his life, and in the process it displays an individual that is undoubtedly built for Hip Hop longevity.

For anyone worried about a sonic shift in Krizzle’s music need only turn to “Me And My Old School,” a syrupy ode that highlights the Southern car culture over a chopped and screwed sample. Reveling in his third coast upbringing, K.R.I.T. continues the celebration with “Country Rap Tunes.” Humble but proud, it’s clear that he is able to respectfully salute his predecessors while still solidifying his own status within the community. Of course, he doesn’t forget about his hard-working devotees in the gentlemen’s club either, with “Temptation” acting as an extension of what “Money On The Floor” capitalized on last year.

    At 15 full tracks (17 if you include intro and a late interlude), 4Eva N A Day is a tight-knit project that also provides some of Big K.R.I.T.’s most potent lyricism to date. Tackling the issue of artistic integrity, “Handwriting” sends shots at label executives who smugly walk around like they’re urban tastemakers. Carrying this intensity over to “The Alarm,” K.R.I.T. candidly highlights the insecurities that hang over his crown. With his words supported by hollowed piano keys, cymbal snaps and a shrilled voice asking “do you believe?” the performance is as enlightening as it is cautionary. A subject only brushed upon in his past, “Red Eye” goes into the unraveling of a relationship that is faced with adversity. Lust, musical endeavors and humility are all tested, and the pain for both parties involved is palpable by the song’s closing. Aware of the inevitable end, K.R.I.T. admittedly raps;

“I can’t be what you want me to be / You shooting too high ‘cause you ain’t aiming at me / One minute you calling out for the D / Then the next minute you wanna be free / Then the next minute you hollering out peace / Although I know it’s a war and they’ll be blood in the street / If you call, don’t be frustrated at me / Just leave your heart at the beep ‘cause mine is harder to reach.”

With three impressive mixtapes in as many years, Big K.R.I.T. has raised the bar for his peers when it comes to consistency, depth of lyricism, and an overall will to succeed. To classify 4Eva N A Day as a circumstantial interlude to his debut would be an appalling understatement; whether it’s a mixtape, a production placement or a featured verse, K.R.I.T. has yet to disappoint. In that regard, Summer can’t come any sooner.

DX Consensus: “Free Album” (the highest possible praise for a mixtape).

    1. Agree with everything said in the rating and review. The last two KRIT albums are 5/5, but this one’s a 4/5. Still probably best thing smokin’ this year.

    2. great album. i put it second to returnof4eva with KWH shortly following it.

I havent been hit by a song in a while. Redeye is a masterpiece.

    3. KRIT really is coming into his own. The mixtape is so well put together. It’s jus packed wit soul and meaning along wit outrageous beats. Shit reminds me of the feeling I had wit Kanye’s first album or common’s like water for chocolate, or even outkast aquemini (referring to the soulfulness). Wake up, Me and my old skool and red eye are my favs but, thats jus splitting hairs cuz I can’t skip any songs… Hip Hop Classic

    4. Im not a huge big Krit fan but he definetly has more talent than some of these wack rappers in da game right now. I personally like returnof4eva more than dis one but they’re both still good. I’ll be looking out to see how well his debut will be.

    5. I’ve been a listener of KRIT since his earlier tapes (read: pre-“KRIT wuz Here”), but I’ve gotta say that this album (forget mixtape) is bordering on classic status. Now, I know that we throw that word around a lot for mostly undeserving music. But, the beats are on point. He’s lyrically at his peak (or damn close to it), the subject matter includes socioeconomic critiques in ways that most people can comprehend (and then still goes over some people’s heads in the process), and overall it’s just a solid project from start to finish.
I can’t wait for Live from the Underground, but until then I’ll be playing 4evaNaDay.

      1. I highly doubt that, but it’s your opinion. However, to call this wonderful mixtape/album that Krit obviously put his heart and soul into a “piece of shit” is disrespectful and shortsighted on your part, and shows how little character you truly possess as well as how ignorant you are. Slap yourself.

      2. hahaha his name fag uhhh i mean swag soldiar boy really lmfao obviously this kat aint shit like u said swag!! lmfao fag!!!

    6. This mixtape is a too nice. Krit always delivers with hard hitting bass lines for the car. Spoken word at its finest.

    7. This is his best mixtape I think. The other 2 I absolutely love but there a few songs on each I usually skip upon relistening. There is not one sub-par or boring song on here at all, every song is awesome.

    8. I been telling people for years this dude is probably the best of his group of artist. I definitely like Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Curren$y, Stalley and Meek Millz but there is something about KRIT that’s just too real. The way that nigga can just connect real shit that everyone goes through and put it in a song without coming off overly hard or super emotional is just something that hasn’t been seen in a while. Dude is just Amazing at this music thing!!!!

    9. This mixtape is by far better put together than most of the albums I heard this year and last year. It feels good to get that feeling from hip hop. I liked it instantly. Krit just followed the traditional formula; beats, lyrics, creativity. I actually feel bad that I downloaded it. This man is ready! Mississippi should be proud!

    10. love this dude. He is in my top 3 list.

      Kendrick
      J. Cole
      BIG K.R.I.T.

Cant wait for his album. Love the lyrics and the chill beats.

    11. not that great it has the sound of what rap was and not what it is he is more of a t.i. and young jezzy rapper and we already have those slots filled i don’t think he will have much commercial success

      1. Your wrong. BIg K.R.I.T. is exactly the opposite of what you believe. He actually raps about real life things and it sounds good.
        Mississippi stand up@

    12. I like Returnof4eva better. 4evaNaDay feels more hook and melody driven, with more breaks and less rapping, than the former. It’s still great, though. I just hope he does more some more rapping on Live From the Underground.

    13. Just started listening to the mixtape. Not sure if it can be considered a mixtape. Not it a diminishing sense anyway

    14. KRIT really went back to his roots on this one… it was much appreciated and as well, respected. I would be too disappointed to see his style become flawed by the industry and its predisposed ways. Keep doing your thang KRIT. forreal.

    15. K.R.I.T earned a fan on this one. I’m from NY so I didn’t hear him much in my cypher besides country sh*t. I’m real with my hip hop though and I know he’s been grinding so when this dropped I DL’ed it. Definitely worth it if for his content alone. Add in that he produces and arranges his own sh*t and he’s shaping up to be one to watch for.

    16. This reminded me of when I listened to SouthernPlayalistic for the first time back in high school. This has all the quality of an album, i wont even call it a mixtape. He killed it big time. He did his thing. Quality music at its finest.

    17. instrumentally i love this dude and its sooo cool to see a cat from Mississippi shine hard. love the Sade sample on skyclub and i love the flute on me and my old school. and the boobie miles saxophone is amazing!!!

    18. If Outkast and Scarface had a baby it’d be Big KRIT – no homo; he’s one of the only cats out right now that has something to say that actually makes you thinkn when you listen, paints pictures – what a true artist should do

    19. If Outkast and Scarface had a baby it’d be Big KRIT – no homo; he’s one of the only cats out right now that has something to say that actually makes you think when you listen, paints pictures – what a true artist should do

    20. If Outkast and Scarface had a baby it’d be Big KRIT – no homo – he’s one of the only cats out right now that has something to say that actually makes you think when you listen, paints pictures – what a true artist should do

    21. krit is 2 raw with this mixtape, right where returnof4eva left off…a bit slow at times but thats what this is, straight ridin music

    24. Big Krit is a young nigga wit a soul of ol nigga, this lil fagswaggers out right now puttin out pink music wit pink beats of course Big Krit wont prolly make it in the mainstream cuz the industry is gay now and control by females because the shit he releases is too real

    25. Definitely one of my favorite new school MCs. The beats are incredible. There are a nice variety of lyrical concepts on this album. Job well done Krit.

    26. I only started listening to krit about 3 months ago. I ain’t played anything else in my iPod since. The dude is setting his own bar. His beats are ridiculous aswell.

    27. cant believe this was only a mixtape! the albums is great from start to finish, I think that the songs get better the closer you are to finishing the album
