Young Jeezy Names His Top Five Rappers, Speaks On Vocal Chord Damage

Young Jeezy recently stopped by KYLD WILD 94.9 to speak with host Nessa, who asked the rapper to run down his top five rappers, dead or alive. During the interview, he revealed an unlikely assortment of emcees, a combination of the deceased and contemporaries.

“Tupac, B-Legit, Juvenile, Scarface and Jeezy,” he said, swapping out his own name at Nessa’s request. “Ice Cube,” he added.

The Snowman also reflected on hurting his vocal chords from not knowing how to properly perform. He said that his nine months off from recording was a learning experience, and that he’s far more invigorated following his recovery.

“Nobody ever taught me how to perform, in the studio or whatever. I just had to learn on my own, and I was yelling when I was performing and I tore my vocal chords. I wasn’t able to talk for nine months. I had to have surgery and it was just different, because I felt like I was going to lose my gift at that point. But I told myself that if I got through it, I was going to give it 180 percent and I got through it. So that’s where I’ve been at – at 180 percent.”

      1. somebody that should never be in your top 5. I’m so sick of these top 5 list. it gives rappers a chance to show how much they don’t listen to other rappers. No big,nas,common,jay,em,3stacks,kane,ll,bigl,pun I can go on and on

      2. @June why does his list have to include those guys you mentioned? it was HIS top 5 and he gave HIS personal opinion whats the big deal

      3. straight up, also, if you repeat those same people, ur probably a sheep. Not saying any of those ppl aren’t top 5 material, but there a lot more ppl that are worthy. The top 25-30 best emcees…the degree of excellence is small

Jeezy mentioned Scarface and Cube. I’m also talkin pharoahe, talib and mos, AZ, a good chunk of wu generals, black thought,

Biggie only had 3 albums, two alive, so if you put him up at that level you gotta justify why he’s that much better. Hell i’d probably put him up there too, but ppl r sheep in their thinking.

    1. damn no wonder this dude sucks look at his top 5, other than 2pac and scarface there str8 garbage not lyricists, and maybe if he didnt smoke newports since he was 5 he would still have a voice but hes always sounded like that he should be the spokesperson for halls cough drops

      1. Dont put pacs name and lyricist in the same sentence. Pac was no super lyricist. He was an amazing story teller and put a lot of soul in his music. He had no amazing punchlines, no witty word play, etc etc. He was the best storyteller ever.
But dont put him in the category of all time lyricists

      2. I agree with Anonymous, Pac told stories and was great at painting lyrical pictures. But outside of that, he didn’t really have any other tricks. Still one of the best tho

      3. best story teller? nas and biggie were better. He was just energetic and had revolutionary messages through his music.

      4. Pac had the best messages in his music, it had a very deep meaning, he could connect with his fanbase and every other thug hustlin’ behind the corner

      5. LOL TUPAC A LYRICIST. CUBE IS UNDERRATED AS MUCH AS PAC OVERRATED, YALL STUPID IF YOU DONT THINK CUBE IS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE ON SOMEONES TOP 5 FAVOURITE RAPPERS

      6. I don’t really consider 2Pac as a lyricist as well, but more of a storyteller or a poet in hip hop. His wordplay isn’t all that fantastic as somebody like GZA, but it doesn’t mean that his music is shit. His stories really hit the soul and many of them sound like they should be told in a poetry slam lol.

      1. if your list includes biggie, pac, and nas, throw jay on the list for good measure, it shows just how cliche a list it is, music is supposed to be subjective so why does everyone’s favourite list have to include the same 3 or 4 names to be legit or indicate you know real hip hop. I respect people that reach beyond the most common names for their favourite, cuz if everyone’s list is the same so much for discussion, might as well shut the door on the genre. Although I do consider Nas up there.

      2. Co-fucking-sign casper!!!

I appreciate nas, biggie and pac just as much as the next dude, but they dont HAVE to be on my top 5 for me to know hip hop. I own every album from each artist. I like each artist. But that doesnt mean i have to put them on MY LIST rather than Black Thought, Big L, Binary Star, Saigon, Joe Budden, Brother Ali, Styles P, Rakim, Kurupt, Andre 3000, Jay-Z, Sean Price, Skyzoo, or whoever else.

Thats like me saying “Whos your favorite ball player? if you say anybody but Brett Favre, Bo Jackson or Johnny Unitas you dont know football”. Maybe you like Tom Brady, Jerome Bettis and Deion Sanders.

    2. How Pac not a lyricist when his lyrics >>> everybody else. Fuck that punchline metaphor shit niggaz. Wanna hear lyrics, listen to this track called Blasphemy. Then get ya mind right ignorant fucks

      1. Exactly. That Blasphemy song shits on anything out now period. Folks don’t know shit about what real lyrics are. Now I gotta go listen to that song and my Me Against The World cd while I work out…

    3. His top 5 is alright. Juveniles good but nowhere near top 5. Same with b-legit. Legits an og in the game and had some good albums but naa. These two niggas is like in the 70s of a top 100 list.

    4. pac not a lyricist? what the hell do you listen to…smh you have to be like 13 yrs old because if your not you should just jump off the highest building you lame….pac never said wack shit like “talked to a female dragon had a fire conversation” or ” ill turn her out..door nob” or “im on like the television”…smh…pac had a message in his music and was a true poet…smh

      1. having a message doesnt equal being a lyricist though? smh you dont understand the meaning of the word son.

and just because hes more lyrical than drake and waka flaka doesnt make him a lyricist. my boss has more money than i do but that doesnt make him rich.

      1. I’ll help and counter with a Pac song- “96 Big body sittin on chrome” known in the new version as “Still i rise”.
Lol that opening verse from Pac shits on your favourite rapper’s lyrical song all day but i got mad love for DMX though, one of the realist to ever do it.

      2. Pac wasnt that lyrical though. he was a philosopher, and had alot of passion whether it was anger, sadness, joy, reflective, whatever it may have been from song to song. but he wasnt LYRICAL like a talib kweli, mos def, joe budden, one be lo, black thought, jay-z, andre 3000, etc.

thats not to say he wasnt dope, or one of the greatest ever, but yall are talking lyrical without knowing the meaning of the word.

      3. Pac was more of a social commentator, rapping about things he saw and lived, and conceptually was ahead of his time, which is why the argument always goes back to him. but to say hes more LYRICAL than Immortal technique, or anybody i just mentioned, is just false.

Once again, not saying youre wrong for thinking he’s better, thats your opinion and the great thing about hip hop, its all subjective. just saying, he’s not more lyrical

    5. jay z is greatest alive but he just isnt as good as pac…he can be but he is more focusses on his watch and benz…dont get me wrong i enjoy those records but he needs to be diverse….other than that he is the best rapper alive……..

      pac
      jay
      em

    6. In my opinion, this is Jeezy’s best work to date. The production here is amazing. The lows are pounding like a mother fucka. I got the deluxe edition, kinda sounds like Lose My Mind was tweaked for perfect production. Anybody who was a fan of Jeezy before will for sure cop this shit the day it drops.

      1. bow wow ..lmfao.. You can’t be fucking serious… I’m all for folks having their own opinion, but you need to be shot for that one…smfh.. I can’t stop laughing, cuz you must be high as fuck to put him there..lol…

    7. Legends cannot be numbered, they are just there:

      2pac
      Biggie
      Nas
      Jay-Z
      Eminem
      Big L
      Big Pun
      DMX
      Jadakiss
      Andre 3k

I guess you can call it a “top 10”

      1. Ah nice to see people putting Pharoahe Monch in list, although I disagree with it, since he only has 3 solo albums in like 500 years. The dude deserves props so its all good. Good list, although I disagree.

    8. 1. Jay-Z
      2. Black Thought
      3. One Be Lo
      4. Joe Budden
      5. Andre 3000

Just my favorites. People hatin on peoples list for no reason…

    9. Lol mine is a top 15 as too may ill rappers

      1.Pac
      2.Em
      3.Nas
      4.Scarface
      5. Biggie/Jay-Z
      6. Rakim
      7. DMX
      8. Mos Def – a true poet
      10.Big- L
      11.Big Pun
      12.Andre 3000
      13.KRS-One
      14.Lupe Fiasco
15 Red Man – very underated rapper

Big up to Jeezy, i’m getting that TM103.
For me lyrist isn’t exactly about punchlines or metaphors. If it were that then you can easily put in the likes of Big L, Cannibus, Immortal technique, Pun, Rakim, Lupe .. the list goes on. Hip hop as a whole was started with young blacks voicing their opinions and frustrations back in the day and each one had a story to tell. Pac will almost always top the top rappers list becaue he was just a true poet. I don’t think Pac’s emphasis was ever on putting complex word play and metaphors in his rap. He used a few here and there. Even Biggie and Em don’t use much metaphors in their raps. Biggie. Nas, Em, Scarface are all great story tellers but Pac just told his better. Jay-z, to me for all his talents just doesn’t say much relevant things. Too much wealth themed lyrics and personal glorification but he makes great music.
There’s a reason why no one could stand against Pac in the East coast- west coast rivalry. The east had lyrical monsters but Pac shit on all of them, ask yourself why? Rapppers could use their complex word play and metaphors but when Pac rapped, people listened and thought about the many things he said in the verse.
Any top 5 list with Pac, Nas, Em and Scarface inside is o.

      1. Hey look here son, pac was not real fact check and i mean do your own research, pac could tell stories and make it sound like he lived it he chose to be poor, B.i.g. and pac are only talked about because they are dead but you have to give that inch to big he kicked that ish he talked, those are also fact. All NAS was was the second coming of pac again a great story teller or if you insist a great poet but thats all. Jay-z might bite big but there isnt one rapper out that hasnt done it too. Also jay-z kicked the ish he spoke, alot of people seem to think there was only one diss from jigga to nas but thats not the case the real diss never gets talked about look it up he ishes on dude. I agree with dude though pac and big shouldnt be in a list they are dead and lets face it your only a legend when your dead. I personally dont like eminem but you are one ignorant fool to think he isnt top two alive expectational if you consider he talks about real life not money, cash, or hoes. and 3 stacks my god 12???? come on son

      1. Hopsin has only 2 albums, took eminems craziness and masta aces flow, and didn’t change the game. I like his music (Despite what the above may show) but come on..

      1. Naw ummmmm U SHUT THA F_*K UP this Man Entitle to his own opinion, plus I hear alot of these Artist he Named In his Music.YOUNG!!!

    10. immortal technique, diabolic, tech 9ne, eminem, 2 pac, biggy, jay z, nas, dmx, t.i,Andre 3000. this is my list but not ranked in order of who i prefer, this is jst my list of favorite rappers

    11. For once this nigga makes sense. His top 5 list the same as all them other niggas. At least Jeezy know his shit even though his rhymin wack as fuck. Top 5 in no particular order:

Scarface, Biggie (Rawse the new biggie BTW), UGK, Nas, Rakim.

Pac good but overrated as fuck.

      Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. I disagree with pac being overrated. Dude died 14, 15 years ago? His music is still relevant and still inspires people to this date. Pac was truly a once in a generation type person.

      2. How the hell would you call 2Pac overrated if Rick Ross made a song called “Tupac Back”??? I think the reason why people think 2Pac is overrated is because too many people are hyping him up, just like Rick Ross! smh!

    12. Too many to mention/try not to leave out, but this is off my head (no order):

      Big L
      Raekwon
      Ghostface Killah

Just cuz the bottom 3 are new to the game doesnt mean they dont kill it every time they spit

    19. 1.) Jay-z (Longevity and consistency)

      2.) 2Pac (Bravado)

      3.) Big (Versatility)

      4.) KRS (Teacher of Hiphop)

5.) Rahkim (“True” Master of Ceremony)

      6.) LL (Swagg)

      7.) Chuck D (Malcolm X of Hiphop)

8.) Kool G Rap (The Blueprint)

9.) Scarface (King of the South)

10.) Ice Cube (Heart of the West)

      1. Although I don’t agree with the order of your list (mainly on where Jay-Z was placed), this is actually the most perfect list in here

    20. A True B-Boy List:
      1. Rakim
      2. KRS
      3. G Rap
      4. Gza
      5. Nas
      6. Kane
      7. Masta Ace

      16. Grandmaster Caz
      17. Guru
      18. Method Man
      19. Deck
      20. Jay-Z

It’s my list…order changes from time to time…but, top 10 usually stays the same.

      1. YOU KNOW WHAT FUCK U EAST COAST BITCH YOU CANT HAVE ANY TOP 20 LIST WITHOUT 2 PAC OR ANY WEST COAST RAPPER THATS LIKE SPITING ON ARE WHOLE MUSIC GENERATION AND MOST OF THOSE RAPPER ARE IN YOUR LIST NEVER AMOUNTED TO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. yeah so kanye is a little on the fashion side of things and he did wear a skirt to one of his concerts but that doesnt take away from his abilities to bless the mic. And jay z is always in the top 10 list somewhere but i do agree he shouldnt be #1 that spot is reserved for pac.

    21. Here’s my Top 10 list in no particular order:
      Nas
      AZ
      Black Thought
      Common
      Rakim
      KRS One
      Eminem
      2Pac
      Biggie Smalls
Mos Def & Talib can slang it out for the last spot

Top 5 right about now in no particular order:
      eLZhi
      Skyzoo
      Kendrick Lamar
      Royce Da 5’9″
      Torae

      1. Special mention to Big L, Big Pun, Andre 3000, Pharoahe Monch, & Raekwon. Too many dope emcees, the deabt is eternal.

      2. is it just me or is Royce da 5’9 a black version of eminem?? they rapped exactly the same on Hell: the sequence

      3. You could say they share similarities but Royce is his own man. Royce’s technique is a tad lower than Shady’s. On Hell: The Sequel, they went toe-to-toe but Royce outshined Em, even though the way Shady was putting his lines together was straight insane. Royce’s bars were just more venomous. Slim kinda rambled at times. Peep the BET Shady 2.0 Cypher. Em got the technique & the substance on point. He buried it (Well, Joe Budden has a strong case as well ey).

    22. Here are the best rappers of all time:
      JERRY SANDUSKY
      RICK ROSS
      CANIBUS
      VINNIE PAZ
      IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE
      CELPH TITLED
      APATHY
      LOWKEY
      NAS
      BIG KRIT
      EAZY-E

Every rapper sucks especially faggots like 50 Cent, Eminem, Drake, Kanye West or J. Cole.

    23. GOATS in the Hip Hop Genre:
      Justin Bieber
      Drake
      MC Barack Obama

    25. can someone explain to me why tupac is considered the best of all time? no hate here, i was jw why everyone always has him at the top. i like his main songs everyone has heard, but could never really get into him like some of the other greats..
please explain! and again, no hate, i just wanna have a real hip-hop discussion

      1. Exactly why is Pac that great?

His first 2 albums were decent nothing special, The Thuglife album was decent. His first and best album came in 1995 MATW and thats it. AEOM had to much filler and the killaminati album was okay.

10.000 songs by pac sound the same: smoking weed and drinking henessy, thug in jail, thug in heaven,my homies, all women are bitches, all women are sisters

Pac could never hang with Biggie, Big L, Kool G rap, Krs etc.

        Oh im not a hater

      2. I know what you mean. I have every single one of Pac’s albums and I think he was good, but def waaay overated. If he were still alive he probably would have faded away from public eye and let’s face it…He would say the same shit on almost every record and the rhymes were basic. I always wished Biggie, Big Pun and Big L left more music behind because they were lyrically insane. I would put Scarface or Z-RO above Pac because they also have shit to say but they are more creative at saying it.

      3. I appreciate your sensible way of asking the question. its very simple why he widely regarded as the best ever. Pac was perhaps more passionate (socio-economically)than anyone else I can think. he translated that passion into his rhymes betther than anyone outside of Bob Marley. I am African, so my view on this is a bit different than yours i’m sure. Furthermore I’d venture to say that as a result of his ability to capture the imagination of the black youth which he did splendidly, could have caused a revolt.

Musically, his work is rivaled by none. with all due respect Biggie’s delivery, Jay-z’s poignancy, Eminem’s brilliance, Pac embodied all of that and without question did it while maintaing an incredible amount of ‘Realness’.

Just listen to the man, and you’ gon’ feel me

Pac could never hang to Biggie, Big L, Kool G rap, Krs etc?

Really? How exactly. Because they could use punch lines. You have to be kidding i guess. Lyrically none of those could even be compared to Pac let alone hang with him. Sure they could have better flow but that’s as far as it gets. You say Biggie is lyrical yet compare Hit Em Up to Who shot Ya and see who got murdered. Didn’t Biggie say he was hurt by Hit Em Up? Lets be honest. Pac made those rappers you mentioned above average at times.

      5. This is a relevant question. I feel like Pac’s raw lyricism does not compare to that of a Nas, EM, or Lupe. People try to murder you for being honest about that. Where Pac distances himself from other rappers is what he meant to Hip Hop. He was a polarizing figure with a captivating personality. For me, he’s more remembered for how his music made me feel as opposed the raw skill of his lyrics… It was never about what he said. It was the passion in which he said it. That’s what sticks with me. He’s not in my top ten as far as lyrics go, but you’d be hard pressed to find another rapper that meant as much to the game as he. That’s real. I’m a Jay-Z fan first and foremost. This is my objective opinion of Mr. Shakur.

    27. GTFOH this East coast cats saying Pac was overated. Lol, how exactly? Was Pac not shitting on the whole East Caost and embarrassing them in diss and also record sales? The East Coast with their, we lyrical, we can battle rap blah, blah, blah… were they not running scared of Pac? To the dude below saying Pac only talked about things like –
” smoking weed and drinking henessy, thug in jail, thug in heaven,my homies, all women are bitches, all women are sisters”
Wow so that 8 topics Pac speaks about. What does your favourite rapper speak about? Let taker Jay-Z, i’m a pimp, i sold drugs, i’m rich. Biggie, i sold drugs, death, bitches, what else they talk about?
And to the other dude talking shit about his albums, lol don’t waste time listening to them. Strictly for My Niggas which by the way went platinum as well had lemme see..mmm Keep Ya Head up. Shits on your favourtie East Coast rapper all day. Should i talk about MATW? No.1 while Pac was in jailed. Outsold the whole East Coast. AEOM, the larger than life album? Where the fuck was the East Coast when Pac was doing 5x platinum in 2 months? You need to educate yourselves on hiphop history. Oh yeah and the 7 day theory? Hail Mary? Didn’t Jay-Z run to do “Me and my girlfriend” about Beyonce? Know what Pac was talking about on me and my girlfriend?

Funny how 15 years later and he is still relevant. Some of you need to understand what lyrics means. Lyrics and the content of as verse. Different from rhyming and flow. Something you people fail to understand. Saying complex things in a rap means nothing.

      1. pac was that nigga no question but get the fuck outta here with all that east coast bullshit u kickin! if u REALLY was into pac youd know what it is u punk ass! You the type of “fan” that got into 2pac for all the wrong reasons. why dont u just spew a meaningless top 5 list like all the other muppets on here and shut the fuck up…fuckin hater…

      2. God damn how you know the dude is from the east coast and not bum fuck Antarctica? we are on the WORLD WIDE WEB ya know! Maybe blaming east coast just makes you feel like your sticking up for 2pac? man what a dick head -_-

      3. Lol @ This Guy, why mad? I just said what i said and i don’t mean to disrespect other great East Coast MC’s. I got love for lot of East Coast rappers, Nas, Biggie, Mos Def, DMX etc but facts are facts when it comes to Pac. I did not get into Pac for any wrong reason. I hated the verbal diarrhea of ‘ Hit Em Up” and till this day think Pac should have never gone that hard on a diss record.

      4. Gets your facts straight Pac was from the east coast he lived in Harlem until he was 15 moved to Baltimore and then moved to Cali we he was 17. It wasn’t until jimmy henchman, Haitian jack, and king tut tried to have him kill in quad studios that pac started beefin with the eastcoast and eventually biggie because he was a mutual friend between Haitian jack and him. But before any of that went down pac had MAJOR LOVE for the east coast and all the music that came from it just check it out he says it himself Old School http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amvjP7TDhNk

      9-Kanye West
      10-Rakin

      1. So you put Kendrick Lamar on your “Top 10 dead or alive” list? But Big, Jay, and Pac don’t make the list? Interesting…

      1. The same person who told you to ask that stupid question. You are the odd ball out, who didn’t list anything, which has to do with everything about the article. Grouch…..lmao

      2. yo stupid ass nigga you was not suppose to answer that question, it’s call rethoriocal question? well the point is the article is abou jeezy listin’ his Mc’s, what he did.
But you don’t have to act like predictable sheeps makin’ the same ol’ boring lists with the samo names. SMH

    30. RARRRRRRRR, you don’t know anything about hip hop RARRRRRRRR I know everything and you know nothing RARRRRRRRRRRRR

    31. Cold 187 aka Big Hutch ,Spice 1, Mc eiht,N.W.A.,A.T.L Snoop,Crooked I,Ice Cube ,MC REN,Pac,Eminem,I love the golden age!

    32. NASIR JONES
      KRIS PARKER
      ICE CUBE
      SCARFACE
      EM
      and as a bonus….GURU
I didn’t put Jay Z up there, because of Jay changed his style AFTER Nas came out. Rakim is in another subject, that he deserves himself. I didnt forget about Biggie, Big Pun, and other deceased rappers but I feel these dudes I put up there, have been consistent and never really was forced to change their style, due to sales or lack of sales. REST IN PEACE to GURU. Never forgotten. I could care less about the new school from MMG, to YMCMB and anyone else in between even though Weezy is a MONSTER. Haven’t been in the game long enough even though you put out commercial hits that teach nothing but sell because of popularity….”Who stole the soul” – public enemy. PEEAACCEE !!!

      1. To Anonymous. I’m a tool?? First of all. State your name, coward. You really sound like a hater, hater on a true Hip Hopper. I grew up in it while you learned it on computers and imitating people. I AM HIP HOP. I know you are not based on your comment. Hip Hoppers don’t make comments like that. You must like 24 years old, just learning the genre and wearing skinny jeans crushing your nuts. Man up. Sucka

    33. tupac wasnt in there either because, tupac was an icon, much bigger than rapping. He is in a whole different kind of category, from his parents being black panther, tupac being an actor, but also a musician/rapper. Too many skills there to just call him, “one of the best rappers”. Tupac wasnt just a rapper but an African American icon who died too young.

    34. Good list from almost everybody. No need to argue everybody is entitled to their opinion with the exception of yadig. That nigga just Dickrides any young money artist. And one more thing the pac And big arguement is stupid. They both were great but pac was the poet. And biggie was the lyrical. Big couldnt do what pac did and vice versa. Pac did get repetitive after a while though. He rode on his enemies and had weed and hennessy every other song. No pac haters im just saying.

    35. tupac dick riders are the absolute worst. he stole his style from a different rapper everyone of his albums, lyrically he isn’t the best, socially uhm no. consciously uh yeah not even close. gangsta? nope. he’s overrated
