Young Dolph’s Murder Suspect Released From Jail On $90K Bond

Young Dolph has been sorely missed since he was killed in late 2021, but now, one of his alleged murderers has been released from prison.

Hernandez Govan, the alleged mastermind behind the plot to murder the Memphis rapper, was released on bond less than 12 hours after Judge Lee Coffee set it on Monday (May 11), according to Action News 5. Govan’s new attorney, Manny Arora, has been credited with securing the bond for his client.

Judge Coffee, however, made clear that Govan’s bond was contingent upon his compliance with house arrest. Govan is only allowed to leave his house for medical emergencies or to meet with his attorney.

But perhaps most shockingly of all is that Young Dolph’s family reportedly gave approval for Govan to be released on bond to the Shelby County District Attorney, Steve Mulroy.

The social media reactions to this ruling were swift and fierce, with many commenting that justice was far from served. “Hope he can get bonded out so the streets see him,” wrote one commenter on Twitter, with another remarking that the “judge said let the streets pick the verdict.”

Govan has been accused of being the mastermind behind the plot to kill Young Dolph, allegedly dispatching Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith Jr. to kill the “100 shots” rapper in broad daylight outside of Makeda’s Homemade Cookies in Memphis, TN.

But another suspect, Shundale Barnett, was also able to walk out of the Ft. Worth, Texas jail where he was being held on an undisclosed charge, back in January 2023.

Barnett, who was charged as an accessory after the fact, was captured with the primary suspect in the case, Justin Johnson.

In a press conference at the time, U.S Marshal Tyreece Miller said that Barnett had been charged as an accessory because authorities believed he was aware of Johnson’s fugitive status and assisted him in evading arrest during a week-long search.

Justin Johnson was transported to the Knox County Indiana Jail and booked on violation of federal supervised release before being transferred to Shelby County Jail in Memphis, where he remains. Shundale Barnett was held at the Clay County Jail in Indiana and was also expected to be transferred to Shelby County.

He was instead released from the Indiana facility on January 21, 2022. On February 17, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office issued a warrant for Barnett’s arrest, admitting that they had “no idea” where he was.
