This Monday saw the protest of NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg’s education cuts to the New York City public school system. As I reported last week, the protest was organized by Russell Simmons’ Hip Hop Action Summit. The demonstration drew some famous faces to support the cause, Jay-Z, Chuck D, P Diddy, LL Cool J, Doug E Fresh, Dead Prez, JT Tha Bigga Figga, Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys were among the protestors.
20,000 people or so showed up to the protest outside city hall. Of those 20,000, 10 were arrested. Rapper Wyclef Jean was among them. One individual was charged with assaulting an officer while the other 9 were charged with disorderly conduct. Wyclef in particular was arrested for attempted to perform. A rather interesting note to all of this is that Michael Bloomberg is a billionaire, you’d think that someone in his position could make a charitable donation to the education system of the city in which he represents.
