Will Smith Says He Once Considered Suicide

Will Smith has been more than vulnerable since he turned 50 in September 2018. With his life and marriage with wife Jada Pinkett Smith becoming more fodder for social media to debate and discusses, Hip Hop’s first-ever Grammy winner is also shedding light on another difficult subject for him – his mental health.

Smith launched a brand new web series, Will Smith: The Best Shape of My Life which documents his body transformation to lose 20 pounds in 20 weeks. In the trailer, the Fresh Prince details how at one point, he thought about suicide, though he doesn’t divulge what moment or incident drove him to such a severe point.

“When I started this show, I thought I was getting into the best shape of my life, physically,” he says in the trailer. “But, mentally, I was somewhere else. And, I ended up discovering a whole lot of hidden things about myself.”

While sitting down with his family going over his upcoming memoir, Smith alludes to almost taking his life. “That was the only time in my life that I ever considered suicide,” he says.

The memoir, Will is set to be released on November 9 and coincides with a book tour beginning in Smith’s hometown of Philadelphia on November 8. The five-date trek includes stops in Los Angeles, New York, Brooklyn, Chicago and London and arrives as he prepares to play Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena in King Richard.

The emphasis behind documenting Smith’s weight loss journey came from a May 2021 photo he shared to Instagram. Clad in a jacket and underwear, the Academy Award nominee bluntly captioned the photo, “I’m gonna be real wit y’all – I’m in the worst shape of my life.”

Time will reveal if Smith stuck to his guns and dropped the weight to get back to his action role good looks.

    1. as someone who suffers from mental illness i only attempted about two or three times. did you know there are medications which make you want to die. just thought these drug makers would try and refine their product but no.

      1. Glad you still here fam. Personally never tried nothing beyond meditation but I could see how drugs could have a negative effect on a vulnerable mind. Had the same thoughts, know it’s like fighting yourself finding reason to stay here. Keep pushing, you got this.

        1. Im glad youre still here. I hope you figure out your way through the medical quagmire America finds itself in. And if the medicine weren’t bad enough, the food also contributes to this. So many of the processed foods kill gut bacteria which are essential for mental health. One of the best things I have ever done in my life is to simplify my diet. Mentally (and physically) i feel much better.

    2. Personally I think everyone has thought about suicide at in part of there life or another, if you’re the exception to that then thank the high power because you’re blessed and highly favored

    3. FOH! I know people who lives with almost nothing and they lean on some high power whatever they call it to make through this journey called life. They just accept their fate and all the shit that comes with. Then you have these celebrities living in multimillion dollars houses with fridge plenty of food and clothes on their back and they still find something to complain in their lives cause their ego can’t take it. FUCK OUTTA HERE! Maybe the reason you feel shitty about yourself is because you and your wife have this fucked up mentality where you let your kids being weirdos and agreed to an open relationship where your wife can fuck whoever she wants and humiliate you on social medias about it. SMH

    5. Lol at this “weight loss journey” nonsense. Obviously he gained a bit of weight to play Richard Williams. Looks like 15 pounds tops. He’s clearly puffing his stomach out trying to look fatter than he is. Unlike somebody who’s been 30 pounds overweight their whole adult life, Will’s body is used to being trim so cutting that 15 pounds for him isn’t that tough. And we all know they have doctors that can prescribe very effective diet pills for him in one phone call

    6. No disrespect, but when you in the game and letting guys Benny Medina, Quincy Jones and whoever else down the line fondle you and do all kinda dick-in-the-booty type things to stay in position, then suicidal thoughts are going to come with that at some point.
