Tyler, The Creator Rubs Grammy Win In Detractor’s Face 9 Years Later: ‘Good Day Mark’

Tyler, The Creator took home a Grammy Award in the Best Rap Album category for IGOR on Sunday night (January 26). The unexpected victory gave the Odd Future co-creator the perfect opportunity to revisit a tweet from someone who told him in 2011, “@fucktyler dont b too excited. u wont get one.”

“I FAVORITED THIS 9 YEARS AGO JUST FOR THE MOMENT TO TELL YOU I GOT ONE,” Tyler tweeted shortly after the win. “YES IM PETTY AS FUCK, GOOD DAY MARK.”

Despite Tyler’s win, he still was outspoken about his feelings toward the Recording Academy and Grammys in general. During a press conference, he equated the word “urban” with the “n-word” and admitted he was torn on how to react to the recent controversy swirling around the Academy’s voting process.

#GRAMMYS: Tyler, The Creator Says 'Urban' Is Just Another Way To Say The N-Word'

“On one side, I’m grateful that what I can make can just be acknowledged in a world like this but also it sucks that, whenever we, and I mean guys that look like me, do anything that’s genre-bending or that’s anything, they always put it in a rap or urban category, which is … and I don’t like that ‘urban’ word. It’s just the politically correct way to say the N-Word to me. So when I hear that I’m just like ‘Why can’t we just be in pop?’”

Tyler continued, “So I felt like half of me feels like the rap nomination was a backhanded compliment. Like ‘Oh my little cousin wants to play the game. Let’s give him the unplugged controller so he can shut up and feel good about it.’ That’s what it felt like a bit.

“But another half of me is very grateful that the art that I made can be acknowledged on a level like this when I don’t do the radio stuff. I’m not playing in Target. I’m in a whole different world than what a lot of people here listen to so I’m grateful and like ehh.”

IGOR arrived last May and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking Tyler’s first chart-topping album.

    1. Didnt he just call his Grammy win a backhanded compliment?? He knows exactly he would never got this Grammy if the Academy had put him in the pop category and that he would never win one with an actual rap album

    2. Im here for the petty! Tyler is immensely talented and self confident. I love when I see people achieving their life goals like this.

          1. Haha, I’m sure he’s gutted you homophobic dickhead! I’ve never commented here before and never intended to, but I couldn’t resist. Also, btw, I’m straight and not even a fan of Tyler, not that it should matter but thought I should make that point before you go down that road. If you hate gay people that much maybe you should give music a miss altogether. I’m sure there’s a lot of closeted dudes in hip hop and you wouldn’t want to unknowingly get converted to the dark side! Hopefully you’re a 14 year old who’s yet to mature, if not, it sucks to be you!

    3. Love how yall mad that he won and are also mad that he wanted to be in the pop category instead since he didn’t rap too much on the album. You people are just bitching just for the sake of bitching at this point and don’t even know how you feel. Just write a rap album, produce your own beats, and then win a Grammy. Better than bitching on forums about things you can’t change

      1. What it comes down to is we are hiphop fans on a hiphop site. So, we pretty much hate the grammys, and we hate the people who talk shit about the grammys, because they mostly suck balls too, and Tyler also sucks balls. We’re not hypocrites, we just hate all of this crap. Destruction of good hiphop complete!

    4. The same dudes who are like “fuck a Grammy”, then win a Grammy, and then are like “look yall, I got a Grammy!!!”. Hahaha

    5. This site keeps deleting my comments. Like I said before, hip hop is in the worst state it’s been in currently.
