Toronto’s Duvy made waves last year after releasing his debut album, Greenwayz; however, his career’s now on hold amid him being brought up on murder charges.

CP24 reported that Duvy (real name Tafari Minott), was arrested on Friday (May 26) in connection with a 2022 shooting that took place in the North York area.

According to police reports, on October 6, 2022 officers responded to a shooting call at 5 Needle Firway, in the area of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West, at around 1:40 p.m. The victim, who’s been identified as 28-year-old Osman Bangura was pronounced dead at the scene.

Despite Duvy’s appearance in court on Saturday (May 27), there have been no further updates regarding the case. Those with information about the incident are encouraged to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.

This incident occurred at a time when the rapper was gaining popularity. Tracks like “Shlime Talk,” “Nightmare Z,” and “Clear the Spot” were helping him gain a wider audience.

However, after his debut album, Greenwayz, released in March 2022, the spotlight only heightened. In an interview with Complex around that time, he explained that the album served as an homage to his childhood.

His laidback flow and gritty intensity were complemented by his candid approach to street life — which may explain his current position.

“(Grassways) is a lot like every other neighborhood,” Duvy said. “It’s dangerous. There’s a lot of ups and downs. You see a lot of people change. But if you’re not from there, the only thing I would tell you is not to come here. You know what I mean?”

It was even reported he had run circles around Toronto heavyweights like Drake as the spotlight on him grew. Meek Mill was even rumored to be eyeing the project for his label Dream Chasers at one point.

Those rumors, however, were quickly dispelled by him. “No, nothing like that,” Duvy admitted. “But Meek showed me love.”
