The Weeknd has revealed he’s working on something for the upcoming film Avatar: The Way of Water, and fans are wondering what it could be.

The Canadian crooner hopped on Twitter on Sunday (December 4) with a post that came with the blue Avatar logo and a 12-second music clip.

“12.16.22,” The Weeknd wrote alongside his ominous tweet.

To get fans talking even more, film producer Jon Landau also shared a snapshot on Twitter with The Weeknd and wrote, “As the Na’vi say, ‘Zola’u nìprrte’ soaiane Avatar’… Welcome to the Avatar family.”

It’s unclear what The Weeknd’s involvement with the film could be, but many believe it has something to do with the official soundtrack. The last time The Weeknd dropped new music was with Dawn FM, his fifth studio album, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in January 2022.

December 16 is the same day the James Cameron-directed film is set to release. The movie is a direct sequel to 2009’s Avatar, which became the highest-grossing movie of all time ($2.92 billion worldwide) and received nine Oscar nominations, winning three of those awards: best art direction, best cinematography, and best visual effects.

A major motion picture isn’t the only thing The Weeknd has been working on. The XO leader is teaming up with Euphoria’s Sam Levinson on a new HBO Max TV show titled The Idol. The show follows a Los Angeles club owner and cult leader (The Weeknd) who enters into a complicated relationship with a rising pop star (Lily-Rose Depp).

The cast also includes Troye Sivan, Debby Ryan and Rachel Sennott, with former Saved by the Bell star Elizabeth Berkley, Power Book II: Ghost actress Melanie Liburd and the multi award-winning Anne Heche having recurring roles.

Produced by A24, Bron Creative, Little Lamb and HBO Entertainment, The Idol was first announced in June 2021 and began shooting in and around Los Angeles last November. In April, however, it was reported the show was going in a new creative direction amid changes to its cast.

The Weeknd shared a 93-second teaser on social media in July that gave fans an explosive, X-rated glimpse at what’s described as “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”
