The Hip Hop Week In Review: Nicki Minaj Twerks On Lil Wayne, Will Smith Vs. Eminem Explained

This week, Hip Hop featured new performances, new music, and old beefs. Nicki Minaj made Lil Wayne (and everyone watching) feel the heat as she worked her assets on Lil Wayne at the Billboard Music Awards. Just about 13 years to the day since Marshall Mathers LP dropped, DJ Jazzy Jeff explained why Eminem dissed Will Smith on “The Real Slim Shady.” Finally, French Montana’s Excuse My French drops to mixed reviews.

Nicki Minaj Twerks On Lil Wayne During Billboard Music Awards Performance

Nicki Minaj was a big winner at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 19), taking home three awards, but some would argue Lil Wayne was the biggest winner of all.

The duo’s performance of “High School” culminated in Nicki twerking and grinding on Weezy, who sat in the center of the stage.

“I am the luckiest guy in the world,” said a grinning Wayne after the dance.

MInaj’s awards included Top Rap Artist and Top Rap Album for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

DJ Jazzy Jeff Explains Why Eminem Dissed Will Smith

It’s difficult to forget Eminem’s famous words on perhaps his most well-known song, “The Real Slim Shady,” when the Detroit spitter rhymed, Will Smith doesn’t have to cuss to sell records / Well, I do / So fuck him. And fuck you too.”

Eminem would go on to reveal that the lyrics were a response to a speech Smith made at the 1998 Grammy Awards, where Smith said cursing was unnecessary to succeed in music.

However, DJ Jazzy Jeff revealed that there may have been more to it. “I was a big fan of Eminem’s—you know, especially of his super early stuff,” said Jeff to Montreality. “I just kinda reached out to him, ‘Yo man, big fan. Would love to do some stuff.’ And he ended up comin’ to Philly and we went in the studio, and just knocked out some stuff. It was crazy, because that was one of the times that Will [Smith] was in town. Will walked into the room, and I think I played Will ‘Just The Two Of Us.'”

“Will listened to it, and Will looked at him and said, ‘You’re either gonna be the biggest flop in Hip Hop, or you’re gonna be the biggest thing that we’ve ever seen in Hip Hop. And [Eminem] never forgot that.”

French Montana’s Excuse My French “Repetitive,” “Lacks An Overall Direction”

French Montana’s Excuse My French may have been highly-anticipated, but club bangers won’t save if from mediocrity, says HipHopDX.

“If affiliations and features could make an album, Excuse My French would be near classic,” says our review of the album. “However, the results of the excessive collaborations, along with French’s limited subject matter, and lack of lyrical ability or overall direction make for a very bad introduction.”

Noting the the album feels “like more of a compilation than a solo project,”the review goes on to say that “French fails to stand out” on the few tracks that are solo affairs.

Ultimately, DX came away underwhelmed with French’s studio debut. “Excuse My French comes off as extremely formulaic. The use of recognizable samples, the go-to features of the day (Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, two Lil Wayne features, three Rick Ross features), the attempts to cover all markets and demographics, give the album a forced feel.”

      1. ignorant comment. Shady is dope and the goat. But hip hop isn’t black or white. if it was black it would be a little harder to be accepted. you just gotta be able to rhyme and show your actually trying that’s why I feel white rappers get respect

      2. As much I think Eminem is a dope emcee, there is no way he is the GOAT. That title is reserved for one of Nas, Rakim or KRS-One in my opinion, since I feel that overall, they have had a larger impact on the development of hip-hop music. For me, Eminem falls somewhere in my top 20, maybe in the same ballpark as Big L or Raekwon.

      3. A Person…top 20? try top 5….when artists within hip hop consider him a top 5 hes a top 5, your opinion on the other hand matters not…..I think you mad that the possible best mc is white.

      4. LOL this fool said Eminem was somewhere in the top 20 close to Big L or Raekwon…hahaha you are a FOOL! Eminem is the GOAT…ACCEPT IT AS FACT. How many classics does Nas have? A couple right? How many classics does Em have? At least 3 by most people’s standards, if you’re asking me I’d say 4 or 5 (cause I’m counting Infinite…and Relapse was incredible and such a cohesive COMPLETE sounding album). Save the “stop sucking Em’s dick” comments for someone who cares. Nas drops an album now it doesn’t even move 200,000 first week…Em’s last album did like 700,000 first week and so did Relapse. I know I know, first week numbers mean nothing…but still. Nobody is listening to Nas like that anymore, he doesn’t have that clout that Eminem still commands. NOBODY in hip-hop brings in numbers like that anymore (except Lil Wayne, but he’s another story and I honestly think some fishy shit goes down with his numbers cause his Carter albums sell HUGE but I Am Not A Human Being 2 didn’t even do 200k first week I don’t think…that shit is fishy). Other rappers say Em is top 5 cause they don’t wanna get on his shit list cause they KNOW IT’S TRUE. Who’s the last person to diss Eminem? Nick Cannon? LMAO…somebody with NOTHING to lose and EVERYTHING to gain. Fuck your favorite rapper. Shady is the GOAT

      5. Funny thing, I have Grandmaster Caz and Melle Mel above Eminem. And I them Eminem is great, don’t get me wrong…. And really, Top 20 on my list is incredible in and of itself. I am not mad at all either way, good music is good music, and all the artists in my top 30 are very close together….
My top 30 or so, not in any particular order, Nas, Rakim, KRS-One, Masta Ace, GZA, Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, Pac, BIG, Eminem, Elzhi, Raekwon, Big L, AZ, Sean Price, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Guru, Black Thought, Kool Moe Dee, Kurtis Blow, LL Cool J, Andre 3000, RZA, ODB, Ghostface, Inspectah Deck, Scarface, Ice Cube and Kool Keith, anyway, the list goes on and on, lots of insane emcees that I love to listen to. Point is, there are a lot of greats, and Eminem is one of many that I am going to remember for their contributions to hip-hop. And for what its worth, my favorite emcee right now is Skyzoo, he has a ton of potential and is a true lyricist.

      6. A person got it, but leave it to every white kid to say em is the GOAT.. Id agree with like top 10, but the now diverse audience of hiphop blows em way out of proportion.. And plus, Nas is one of Em’s favorite rappers, so take the hate down a couple levels boi

    1. up to I looked at the receipt four $5212, I be certain …that…my sister was like actually receiving money in there spare time on-line.. there brothers friend had bean doing this 4 only 18 months and just cleard the debts on their apartment and got themselves a Ford. read more at…… Fx85. m

    2. Nas, Rakim and KRS are has been’s with zero clout. Eminem has fallen off, but is easily the goat if those are his closest competitors.

      1. Thats dumb, none of those rappers fell off like em, now he makin half pop, soft, cry baby shit.. and even if he didnt fall off, GOAT is Rakim

    3. Eminem said he didn’t like being put in the same category as the soft pop stars at the time so thats why he dissed them

    4. So you all know, when Jeff says he played “Just the two of us” to Will, he was referring to ’97 Bonnie and Clyde from the SSLP

    5. will smith trying to emasculate black males he part of the illuminati homsexual agenda but you dumb fucks will still deny it

    6. its obvious will smith was jealous of eminem and his success i suspect a bit of racism as well

    7. NIKI M IS A DIRTY LIL WANNA BE HOE,LIL WAYNE SUCKS JUST LIKE HER ALL SHE HAS IS ASSCETS,A BIG A– BIG FAKE BOOBS AND SUCKS ALL THE WAT AROUND SHE JUST SELLS RECORDS CAUSE SHE USES SEX TO PROMOTE HER SALES THATS ALL,SHE WILL NEVER BE BIG LIKE MARIAH IS F——K NIKI AND YMCMB CREW THEY ALL WACK AND FAKE LIKE NIKKI’S WIGS BOOBS.

      1. what the fuck is a wanna be hoe? you like the queen of hoes? does she not meet your ‘hoe’ standards? lol fuckin hoes…

    8. I like Frenchs hustle, I’m a fan of his grind and the movement but my favorite on the album is Marble floors, love the beat and the feel of this song. Being a producer my self I’m always looking to change the sound of things, so tired of everyone remaking the same songs because someone else had succes doing so on their projects.
