The Grouch Explains “Mom & Pop Killer,” American Effects

The Grouch [click to read] recently released “Mom & Pop Killer,” which is the latest single off his album Show You The World [click to read]. The video for the track features various small businesses being shut down after years of service, going with the theme of the song. HipHopDX caught up with The Grouch to touch on the song concept, the current economic crisis of America and an update on new Living Legends projects.

I pretty much just wanted to make a visual that went with the title of the song,Grouch told DX about the video concept. “Of course the song is talking about big corporations putting small businesses out of business. But I wanted to stretch it and make it look like they’re actually putting down murders on the daily. I just wanted to get people thinking. I mean it’s convenient to be able to buy socks, televisions and apples at the same place but at what cost?

With the economic crisis America is currently facing, The Grouch also spoke on how Hip Hop has been affected.

There has definitely been a lot of independently owned record stores that have come and gone. That’s where we’ve traditionally done the most of our business so we’ve been affected. Other doors have opened, like for instance the digital download world but imagine if the only place you could physically walk into a store a buy music was at Best Buy, Target or Wal Mart. That would be awful! What if you could only buy sandwiches from Subway or Quizno’s? In a lot of places it’s getting to that point.

Aside from being a member of The Living Legends, The Grouch is also a member of several other groups. Fans of his other groups may be pleased to find out The Grouch has been back in the lab with Eligh and Zion I for different collaborative follow-ups.

I Have a project with Eligh coming out early next year, hopefully the next Zion I and Grouch album soon after. I’m always making new music. I have a couple other things in the works but I don’t like to speak on things until they’re 100 percent.

When asked about the pending Living Legends album, The Grouch was more discrete. So, how is it coming together?

When the time is right, it will,” he replied.

Currently, The Grouch‘s Show You the World is in stores.
