T.I. Believes East Coast Bias Is The Only Reason 50 Cent’s Bigger Than Nelly

T.I. has challenged 50 Cent to a Verzuz battle, but the offer hasn’t been accepted so far. In what may be a ploy to get 50 to participate, T.I. diminished the New York-bred rapper’s Hip Hop status by claiming the G-Unit boss has greatly benefited from East Coast bias.

“New York is the birthplace of Hip Hop and they have the most successful, some of the most talented lyricists known to man,” he said during an appearance on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning. “But even though they have those lyricists, some of the most capable and accomplished lyricists known to man, it’s some bullshit that slid through there that y’all hold up in high regard that if they was from somewhere else, it wouldn’t have been the same.”

Co-host Peter Rosenberg then pressed T.I. to name some examples, which led to 50 getting mentioned. According to Tip, if 50 wasn’t from New York, he’d be on the same level as Nelly

“I’ll tell you what, just being real — if 50 Cent were from the Midwest, he’d be Nelly,” T.I. contended. “Nelly got two diamond albums!”

While T.I. incorrectly stated Nelly has two diamond LPs (only 2000’s Country Grammar has earned that certification while 2002’s Nellyville is four million sales shy of it), his point does have some merit when examining album sales alone.

50 has two multi-platinum solo projects, a multi-platinum G-Unit album and a platinum soundtrack in his discography. In addition to a diamond-selling debut, Nelly has two multi-platinum solo projects, two more platinum solo efforts and a platinum St. Lunatics LP.

T.I. Once Canceled A Rapper's Career Over Snitching But 50 Cent's Still Playing Mind Games

T.I.’s argument to downgrade 50’s standing in Hip Hop comes amid the Power executive producer trolling the Grand Hustle leader over his Verzuz challenge. Earlier this week, 50 reposted an old clip of Tip in a Crime Stoppers campaign video on Instagram and got a lengthy response from the Atlanta-bred rapper.

“I’ll take this as an acceptance of this catalog challenge,” T.I. wrote. “YEEESSSSSIR-SKI‼️ @verzuztv @therealswizzz @timbaland WE GOT HIM‼️ HE BIT THE BAIT‼️SET THIS SHIT UP SO I CAN FINALLY SHUT THIS WATERMELON HEAD,INVISIBLE NECK ASS NIGGA UP ONCE AND FOR ALL‼️”

He added, “As far as this clip goes…it’s cute… old, outdated,& in poor taste (much like your catalog @50cent)… however I prefer FACTS‼️ AND THE FACT REMAINS….I HAVE NEVER GIVEN ANY INFORMATION TO ANY FORM OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AT ANYTIME IN LIFE TO GET ANYBODY ANY TIME FOR ANY CRIME‼️ Supreme told me to ask @50cent if he can say the same???”

    1. I’m not quite sure which stage of syphilis TI is going through right now, but he should definitely get some medical and psychological help.

    2. Back in 2002, Nelly was the only one approaching Eminem in terms of commercial sales and visibility. I’m not sure what TI’s point is because Nelly definitely got his accolades. The difference is that Nelly made songs for the pop charts whereas 50 Cent’s music is more geared towards the streets. As much as I think TI has a decent discography, he’s never had anything hit with the level of impact that Nellyville or Get Rich or Die Trying. To be fair most artists haven’t, it doesn’t happen often. But TI needs to chill with the smack talk because when it comes to a battle of hits, he isn’t a contender.

    3. Well… I don’t like Nelly and his oncle sam music. But I don’t like Fifty either and I always thought GRODT is an overrated record. It doesn’t mean Fifty is a bad rapper. He has a few hits here and there. But he never was the big break the NYC needed back in the 2003. As far as T.I… well this skinny ass motherfucker has always been fun to me considering how he’s always tryin to act like he’s a tough and all that…

    4. 50 and Nelly are comparable, TI is that 8 year old that hangs out with teenagers ands trys to be cool, but the big kids don’t really acknowledge him, unless he’s making an ass of himself.

    5. Everyone can quote at least 2 or 3 lines from 50 songs even if they dont fuck with him. Can T.I. say the same thing? Tipster has no quotables or memorable bars.

      1. T.I. had hits on hits on hits though, and his albums were solid the whole way through. If you can’t quote him, then you weren’t listening.

    6. Dude Nelly was a global star…wtf you talking about? This dude is so fuckin delusional. People fucked wit 50 before GRODT…50’s appeal was his ruthless lyrics towards other rappers and his life story. This is what dumb muthafuckas like TI do…They disregard what actually happened, and equate what they want to think with fact. 50 blew up cuz he was controversial and a dope rapper…he had balls that no other rapper showed at the time, had an actual real life hood story and people ate it up. Nelly blew up cuz he made fun music that everybody ate up. TI’s problem is that he doesn’t approve with the street’s opinion, cuz that’s all he values…what he doesn’t understand is that Nelly wasn’t for the streets and 50 was, but both were extremely successful…except to Cliffy, the people he wants to like Nelly don’t and the only explanation is east coast bias…Imagine acting like Nelly wasn’t successful? Like it’s underwhelming to have the amount of success Nelly had…this guy is brain dead

          1. Nah he just got corny doin rnb duets with joe, olivia, justin timberlake, etc… and he started to sound boring as well always rapping about money…

        1. @jcole, 50 became a business man after the massacre, he was busy getting that money elsewhere. Hence, here he is now. Resume longer than a carpet

      1. Took the words outta my mouth. On a side note T.I. Is in the running for the current mist annoying clown in the culture. All these accolades and you’d think he would have a little more self confidence than he has, getting rattled by 50 so easily. If you look up irrelevant in the dictionary it explains where T.I. In his career.

    7. Record sales don’t make you a dope artist, it means a lot of white people buy your music. “White people love everything a nigga do”….Ol Dirty Bastard.

    8. 50 smart n funny af, but not there musically for me. Only 50 line I know is “many men,” but I have a southern bias. I can easily ramble off several ti lines, “rubberband man wild as the taliban,” “…you don’t know me,” “in a ’96 Impala with the strap in my lap” etc. Take it a step further and one could compare PSC with G-Unit. However, what are the metrics? 50/G-Unit in my humble opinion is successful due to mainstream dollars. Stupid successful, but so is Justin Beiber and Drake. No one in my area really was out there and listening to 50. TI/PSC was boomin in the community. I could easily see someone’s mom buying them a G-Unit album or shirt back in the day, but wasn’t touching Pimp Squad Click. Again metrics …

Scarface had a video a while back talking about the decision-makers behind the music that we’re inundated with. It’s an old concept. You can even find an old british band, Joy Division, talking about who makes the decisions and who really has their finger on the pulse. Think about this, Chicago is probably the wildest city right now and probably has been for the last decade. In that environment, we were blessed with Noname, Chance, and Saba. They aren’t as successful financially but are spokespersons for our community that uplift, engage, and push forward. If anyone has the pulse, I’d put money on them. They don’t seem like kids that jammed to 50 growing up or at least weren’t inspired by him musically. If they were contemporaries of 50, they would be overshadowed by his easily digestible content. Rich suburban kids would drink the 50 Koolaid and wouldn’t give other artists a chance. That leaves us where we are now; Debating the cultural significance of an artist by their marketability to those outside of our culture.

On some real shit, neither artist is fucking w my boi Nelly

      1. The P$C album was garbage and a major commercial flop. It didn’t even go Gold even though T.I. was going Platinum or better on every album at the time. I think musically it’s T.I. > 50, but overall G-Unit > P$C.

      2. I guarantee you more people in your area were listening to G Unit then there were listening to PSC in NY. Or anywhere else outside of atlanta. Most people dont even know what the fuck PSC is. And thats not NY Bias thats just facts.

    9. Tip high. Not a super 50 cent fan, but his music was more edgy than Nelly- and his grind just harder. Talking about vitamin water, headphones, business deals, power, Reebok, GUnit and thousands of other shit. Nelly dope… 50 just a New York hustler… real chit

    10. TI believes that just cause he sucks penis doesnt mean hes gay. He also believes just because hes a federal informant doesnt mean hes no snitch!!!

    11. Im convinced Ti is retarded at this point the things that comes out of this fools mouth he must be retarded

    12. Nelly Sucked since he came in the game introducing himself reciting a kids nursery rhyme.
I’m no 50 cent fan but Nelly has always sucked. Since day one.

    13. Fifty trash he blew up over clowning ja rule everybody knows it that’s why he made money everywhere else music’s garbage they just ride for him because he’s from uptop Nelly did his thing t.i wants to join the smoking session someone let him get a toke!

    14. 50 Cent is only bigger than 49 cent. He had one good album, the rest are trash. By contrast Nelly has a few great albums, he worked with the cream from Lil Flip to Xtina, he battled KRS and he was open-minded enough to make a country rap hit while 50 has been living from talking bullshit about Ja Rule for 10 years.

    15. Ti has contracted the “quarantine quack” syndrome – dude is beefing for rap and seeking attention for a statue that is only limited to the south.

The irony he would compare 50 to Nelly as if that is some slight given Nelly has had more of an impact than Ti worldwide.

Ti is regional and 50 and Nelly are worldwide.

    16. So the funny thing here is that 50’s features are hotter than TI’s catalog. React, Let Me In, the joints with Em and Dre, the joints with Game, the Mobb Deep joints, the GUnit joints, UP! with LoveRance, The Woo… come on man. I’ll give T.I credit for riding that hot wave of the South back in the mid 2000s but he never was the hottest artist out there. OutKast, Luda, Wayne, Jeezy, Scarface, the No Limit run all was better than the federal TIPster.

    17. Why does TI keep talking shots at the town as part of his music angle.you wanna versus cool have 1. We all ain’t in music from newyork.. relax

    18. Ti could have been the biggest artist until he started feeling his own shit 50 grinder under Eminem which all mc’s should say what you want about him but he made hip hop what it is today I started on no limit and cash money I was 12 and bought my first hip hop album 400 degreez juvenile

    19. Tip aint fuccing with 50. Tip aint even the hardest on his own label ill give that to my nigga Dro

    20. To me the verzuz battles are two Artist of the music industry taking turns playing old hits from their catalog #Drinkonsumthin #ChillSon…
