SZA has long been a proponent of women’s self-confidence, so her recent praise of Janelle Monáe for confidently expressing her sexuality is no surprise.

Recently, SZA has become more vocal about embracing herself and her sexuality, which has been reflected in her music. Therefore, it makes sense that she would praise Monáe, who recently went viral for flaunting her bare breasts on several occasions.

While some people objected to the “Tightrope” singer’s NSFW promotional campaign for her forthcoming new album, The Age of Pleasure, SZA supported them wholeheartedly, explaining that there’s no need to box women in because they can be intelligent, classy, and sexy too.

“I love that’s it’s HER being free rn because ppl LOVE to box women in and claim that because your articulate respected and intelligent 🙄 you can’t show your body or be sexual or anything else lol,” SZA in the comments of RNB Radar‘s Instagram post featuring Monáe.

She also expressed admiration for Monáe’s “self-renaissance,” adding: “It’s a ridiculous notion and I’m ALL FOR HER SELF RENAISSANCE.”

Monáe’s recent stunt coincides with the release of her new single “Lipstick Lover,” which in the accompanying video features more naked people.

It wasn’t the first time SZA came to the defense of another female entertainer. Earlier this year, she spoke out in support of Angela Bassett after she was snubbed at the 2023 Oscars for Best Supporting Actress.

Prior to the award ceremony, the singer tweeted her frustrations regarding Bassett’s history, saying that when she realized “Angela Basset [sic] doesn’t already have an Oscar” it made her wanna “knock shit over” — almost as if she had foretold her defeat.

Bassett was nominated for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She was previously nominated for Best Actress at the 1993 Oscars for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It, but lost to Holly Hunter in The Piano.

As well, it isn’t the first time SZA has advocated for women to embrace their identities and feel confident about themselves.

During Bilboard’s Women In Music awards ceremony in March, the New Jersey singer delivered a powerful speech about acceptance as she accepted this year’s Woman Of The Year award.

“There’s so many women in this room right now that I respect so deeply,” SZA said during her speech. “This could have been any of us in this room and whether it’s Lana Del Rey or Olivia Rodrigo or Chlöe [Bailey] or Doechii who’s a fucking star or Latto or even Coi [Leray], my very own Jersey baby.

“I just, I really think sometimes there’s a misconception that like, everybody always feels like that girl. Like, ‘Oh I know I’m that bitch and I have a lot of confidence.’ And I feel like it’s okay to not be that person all the time.
