Iconic group, The Sugarhill Gang will be releasing their first album in more than ten years, according to a report by AllHipHop.com. The group is currently recording this album, the first since their 1999 children’s album (Jump On It!). The Gang is most known for their 1979 hit, “Rapper’s Delght.”
Currently, the group will be a focal point of “I Want My Name Back,” a documentary done by producer Roger Paradiso. Paradiso spoke with AllHipHop about the documentary and also about the group’s negative experience with the industry.
“They’re working on a new album and have been for a while,” Paradiso noted. “They got so disillusioned during their first experience. If that song [the seminal hit “Rapper’s Delight”] happened today, they’d be set for life. But they are living a very modest life.”
The group’s involvement with “I Want My Name Back” also explains the various obstacles they have had to battle while in the industry, including legal woes and financial problems.
“Their recording career came to an end not really because they wanted to, but they were under such a bad contract,” Paradiso added. “They started touring and started learning how they were getting ripped off,” Paradiso said. “When their contract came up, they got legal advice, and they tried to negotiate a better contract and the label didn’t want to. They had no publishing control and they certainly weren’t paid correctly on the royalty side.”
No finalized release date has been officially provided for either project.

Poor dudes, they had issues with the industry. Ask Grandmaster Caz’s opinion about these cats, the dude wrote one the most famous verse on Rapper’s Delight, isn’t credited, won a lawsuit about it and these cats still complaining about the indutry & get a documentary? Shoutouts to The Sugarhill Gang!!!
No offense, but who is really going to buy this album?
Is this the “original” Sugarhill Gang with the original Master Gee and Wonder Mike, along with Big Bank Hank, or is this the replacement Mike and Gee.. The original Mike and Gee ended up having a falling out with Sugarhill Records Management some years back.. if you’ve been to an S-Hill gang show in recent years, compare the way these guys look to the above photo. Only a bigger Hank is there from the original lineup. Don’t get it twisted. The original Mike and Gee have been doing shows as a duo, and have included Grandmaster Caz on several shows, who wrote Big Bank Hank’s parts on the original records..
Didn’t know. It’s cool they show respect to Caz.
