Spliff Star has revealed that it was through slapping Busta Rhymes that he and the “Touch It” hitmaker became friends — and still are over three decades later.

In an interview on Maff Hoffa’s podcast My Expert Opinion on Saturday (April 1), the much celebrated hype man discussed the origin story behind his and Busta Rhymes’ (real name Trevor Smith Jr.) relationship. According to Spliff, it all started when both men were interested in the same girl.

“He faked married this girl named Janice,” Spliff Star began. “I had a big ass crush on her and n-ggas ran up the block and was like, ‘Yo, yo, that n-gga Trev, he married your girl!’ He married what? Mind you, this n-gga tall, I’m short. I said: ‘Where he at?’ N-gga, Buss was standing right there, I jumped up and smacked the shit outta him. Bow!”

He continued: “Everybody was like, ‘Oh shit.’ Even Busta, was like [shocked expression]. Bloodclat marry mi gyal. I’m a lil n-gga, skinny n-gga, but that’s how we met. And then after that, we been hanging out with each other and all that, and turn into teenagers.”

This isn’t the first time Spilff has spoken in depth about their storied friendship. During an interview with Donnell Rawlings on the Hip Hop History High  podcast in 2021, Spliff said they both first met when they were children and how Busta became a close ally when they were teens.

“When we met, I was 11 and he was 9,” he said. “Busta was doing it with Leaders [Of The New School], and I was on my street shit. At that time, I was runnin’ around with Haitian Jack and them. I wasn’t doing no rap stuff. So, I always thank God for Busta. He was the friend that had something better to offer.”

Meanwhile, Busta Rhymes has been busy with new music, as he was recently recruited to add some flavor to the remix of Coi Leray‘s hit single “Players,” which samples one of his own classics.

Coi Leray dropped the official remix last month, with Busta added as a guest feature. His appearance serves as a full circle moment for Leray, who saw another remix of her song by DJ Saige sample Busta’s “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See.”

Saige’s remix helped boost the song’s popularity, and so it only made sense for Busta to hop on the remix. The animated New York legend added his usual high energy and charisma to the remix, on which he praises Coi Leray and DJ Saige for what they did to the song.

Look how we got on Saige is killin em with the blend/ And Coi be bodying shit no matter how they pretend/ Create a block forever knowin my shit hot/ Flirtin with a n-gga while twerkin on TikTok,” Busta raps.
