Soulja Boy was simply not impressed with the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards and made sure to let the world know it.

Taking to Twitter the morning after the annual show on Wednesday (September 13), the Atlanta rapper named a handful of A-list stars who were absent from the festivities and cited that as his reasoning for why the show was “wack.”

“VMAs was Wack. No Travis and he just dropped best album. No lil baby. Where was 50 cent ain’t this 50 years of hip hop? Fuck this Shit free thug,” he began. “Why young boy ain’t ever perform at VMAs or BET? Music game Fucked up let the real ones shine.”

He continued: “I mean where was drake? Where was Beyonce? Jay z? Ye? Mtv fell off simple. Let’s see what they do next year. Not impressed. At all.”

Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary has been on Soulja Boy’s mind for some time. Last month on the genre’s actual birthday, the 33-year-old rapper took to Twitter to reflect on his contributions to the culture.

He wrote: “When I came in the game they said I killed hip hop. But really, I birthed the new wave of hip hop with internet/streaming. Ahead of my time. #HipHop50”

Soulja added: “Now everyone vlogs their career like me. Now everyone uploads their music to the internet. Now everyone goes live for their fans. I started it. Thank me or not. Flowers/Credit or not. #HipHop50”

Despite the names he noted were not at the VMAs, plenty of big names in Hip Hop were present inside the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday night (September 12).

Nicki Minaj not only hosted the main event, but performed multiple songs including a mixtape favorite and a never-before-heard track. She also gave a live debut to her latest single, “Last Time I Saw You.”

The tender performance, which saw Nicki recite her wistful lyrics stood largely in one spot and hiding her figure underneath a large black gown, gave way to a high-energy rendition of an unreleased track from her upcoming album Pink Friday 2 – which drops November 17.

Minaj later joined Lil Wayne, LL COOL J, Run-DMC and other rap legends for a special performance celebrating Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary to close out the show.

The all-star medley opened with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message” and Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “The Show,” before Nicki brought fans into the 21st century with “Itty Bitty Piggy” and “Red Ruby da Sleeze.”

Her Young Money mentor Weezy then picked up the baton and performed “A Milli,” paving the way for LL COOL J (“I’m Bad,” “Mama Said Knock You Out”) and Run-DMC (“Rock Box,” “Walk This Way”) to bring it home.
