SonReal Assesses The Vancouver Hip Hop Scene

Vancouver has been heavily influential in creating some of music’s best but when it comes to Hip Hop, lately the city hasn’t made as many notable moves outside of its limits.

Recently talking with HipHopDX, SonReal, a Hip Hop artist based in the Canadian city, detailed the rap scene in Vancouver and reveals why more artists haven’t made it out.

“Vancouver’s Hip Hop scene has a lot of talent,” SonReal says in an exclusive clip that premiered in the DX Daily yesterday (December 12). “There’s a lot of people that are really good at doing music and Hip Hop music, a lot of talented producers and stuff but the scene hasn’t quite developed yet. A lot of the talent stays in the city. People are doing their thing and making moves but I feel like Vancouver’s going to be on the come up in the next few years.”

SonReal also explains that while the city has a lot of dope talent, it’s their “business sense” that has kept them from reaching their potential nationally.

“Vancouver’s business sense for music, it hasn’t quite gotten there,” he said. “There isn’t a lot of people making it out of the city to be completely honest with you. A lot of people are doing it within the city limit.”

    3. Moka Only is the king of the Vancouver scene and the entire west coat canadian hip hop movement. Dude is a great rapper (especially his 2001-2003 stuff which is classic) and an amazing producer and r&b singer as well. Nobody can beat Moka Only or ever will. He’s one of the best on the planet in general. So heavily slept on. Check out the albums: Codenname:scorpion, Flood, Lime Green, Lowdown Suite, Ron Contour 2001, ah man the list goes on. Forget everybody else on the scene. He is the scene. Swollen Members are just an extension of Moka Only. Check the songs ”Imagine Me” , ”Way Out” and ”Get what you get”. He also was in a group called ”Perfect Strangers” and they dropped the track ”Forefront” which was produced by an unknown producer called The Alchemist.

      1. Keep cheerleading and dick sucking. Rascals were the only good rappers from Vancouver but nobody gives a shit about weak ass Canadian rap music anyway.

      2. #1. son real is a dope mc look his shit up/

#3. Canadian Radio is forced to place music that is recorded in Canada thats how 50 started to blow up cuz he recorded a project there and the canadian law forced the stations to play his songs.
#4. Canada is the only place where indie rappers can really get on real radio how the fuck can you not respect that?
#5. all the reasons above are why your comment should have a helmet and a life preserver on it

      1. Watched the video and dude is horrible, man, fuck you talkin’ about!!?? People wearing Wu-Tang shirts/Hoodies really need to stop with that shit, makes you look like your trying too hard. Don’t be a wannabe, just listen to the music and don’t try to represent so hard because you were most likely still suckin’ on nipple when Wu dropped “36 Chambers” album.
