Smino has delivered a cover of OutKast‘s 2003 smash “Roses” and while he had huge shoes to fill, the St. Louis native certainly did André 3000‘s hit some justice.

As part of triple j’s Like A Version series, Smino released his cover of the song on Thursday (April 4) and fans in the comments were quite impressed.

Smino has been doing his thing for some time. In 2022, his fifth annual ‘Kribmas’ show in his hometown of St. Louis ended with the rapper being honored with his own day.

At the end of the show, a member of Smino’s team came out on stage to surprise him with a video – and it featured St. Louis mayor Tishaura Jones announcing the news.

“I just want to congratulate Smino on the 5 year anniversary of Kribmas,” Mayor Jones said. “You’re always outreaching the community and being just a wonderfully talented artist. And it’s my pleasure as mayor of the city of St. Louis to declare today, December 18, as Smino Day.”

After signing to Motown Records in late 2021, Smino had a busy 2022 that included dropping his third LP Luv 4 Rent and teaming up with Pharrell’s ICECREAM brand for a Zero Fatigue capsule collection.

In February 2023, he announced a sequel to his She Already Decided mixtape and said it would arrive on 4/20 – the same date the original dropped in 2020.

To go with the news, the St. Louis rapper shared a new song on SoundCloud called “Smi, Myself & I” — a freestyle over Beyoncé‘s “Me, Myself & I,” the Scott Storch-produced song from her 2003 album, Dangerously in Love.

The track is accompanied by a music video directed by The Film Lord, which finds Smino rapping backstage and on a tour bus, with Ab-Soul also making an appearance in the clip.

However, nearly one year later, the project has yet to materialize.
