Shawty Putt Talks Debut Album, Maury Povich Love

    Atlanta rapper Shawty Putt is raising some eyebrows and starting some finger-pointing with his Too Short and Lil Jon-assisted hit “Dat Baby” [click to view]. The song, inspired by false paternity allegations, is entirely fictional, according to its writer and performer. However, an avid lover of daytime talk shows, where the social phenomenon started, Shawty Putt says the song may go a bit further.

    I just gotta give a shout out to Maury [Povich], if I could, man. I really fuck with that show! We got some things in the working. Hopefully… I don’t want to speak too much on it and jinx it or whatever, because we’ve got some issues, but I got the word that Maury is definitely cool with the song,Putt revealed to HipHopDX today.

    I really see the money that they makin’, and it’s money that I helped them make,” said Putt on why, after nearly a decade of assisting, writing and background roles in Hip Hop, he’s stepping out as an artist. The rapper has worked with T.I. on “Dope Boy Fresh,” Bun B [click to read] on “I’m Fresh” as well as extensive work with Youngbloodz, Backbone and others. “I’ve been around for a while; this shit ain’t new,” Putt said, of what he wants the masses to understand.

    Although Putt says it is premature to reveal the featured guests on his Explicit Lyrics album, he does promise to call in some of the favors he’s owed. Signed to BME/Razor & Tie, Lil Jon has worked as album’s executive producer, helping Putt find the stardom Jon helped deliver to Crime Mob, Pitbull [click to read] and Lil Scrappy. “I know damn near everybody in Atlanta,” Putt told HipHopDX Thursday afternoon. “I worked with most of the artists, nearly all the producers.Lil Jon and Shawty Putt have a two-week extensive studio recording session planned for this month, although the two have a reported “ton” of music. “We just gonna finish this album. He and I gotta put our official stamp on it.

    Really, I’m just in my own lane,” said Putt, of his relation to Atlanta’s colorful texture of snap rappers, trap stars and now creative teens. The rapper cited his labelmate Devin The Dude [click to read] as someone he compares himself to. “I really identify with Devin, ’cause he just does his thing. My shit is kinda foolish. At the same time, it’s real – real situations that everyone can relate to. Not in the sense of [just] ‘keeping it real.’ It’s everyday shit. You don’t have to have sold a bunch of dope or been living in the projects everyday of your life to understand my music. I just kick it.
