Russell Simmons’ controversial RushCard is under fire from thousands of users who say that they cannot access their funds (October 14).
Reportedly, UniRush, LLC’s (RushCard’s parent company) scheduled migration to a new “technology partner” has wreaked havoc on the company’s ability to process deposits and withdrawals. Hundreds of RushCard users have vented their frustrations on Facebook. A Change.org petition was created by a RushCard holder, as well.
“There are thousands of us that have been locked out of our accounts, can’t access accounts, money is missing, direct deposits not posted,” says Nicole Blackshear of Dayton, Ohio in an exclusive statement to HipHopDX. “They keep lying on their Facebook page that the system is back up, and it’s not. When you call, you stay on hold for hours and then the line just hangs up on you. I have not received my direct deposit and the money that I had in there already is not available. Try to swipe the card at a store or ATM and it declines. Tried to log in online and it says my card is deactivated. If you go to Facebook and go to RushCard’s or Russell Simmons’ page you will see that there are a million on us suffering. People are being evicted, can’t get to work because they can’t get gas. People are needing milk and pampers for their children. People’s utilities have been disconnected. There is so much pain and suffering and no explanation.”
HipHopDX attempted to call RushCard Member Services multiple times, but each call was disconnected before anyone answered.
Russell Simmons has received criticism in the past over hidden fees included in the RushCard. The Huffington Post published a story comparing RushCard fees to typical bank accounts.
As of press time, RushCard has released two statements, which are available below.
In a video statement released this afternoon, Simmons says “We normally give you access to your direct deposit two days earlier than your payday. Unfortunately this week we will be unable to do this, but you will get your money on your actual payday.”

This is messed up. I’ve signed the petition for everyone affected to be compensated for this huge inconvenience. We have families to take care of and they don’t even give accurate responses. My Payday is today and I have a medical issue that need to be taken care of, I am a asthmatic who needs her inhaler, so where is my direct deposit? Are you going to compensate us? Not only should we receive our initial deposit, but an extra deposits for the screw up, if something does not work, go back to the old way. Those emails did not state that you wouldn’t get your deposits early, that comment only came after the screw up.
You should contact the issuing bank. I think it’s called MetaBank. I think there number is 1-866-550-6382. If they can’t assist you can report them to the OCC so they can further investigate and hold people responsible.

This has been seriously ridiculous. I was not able to access funds also, and I definitely plan to discontinue use of this card service. On another note, all of the idiotic comments on here about the people using the services, and the ridiculing for there choices, is very sad of some of you. ALOT of banks have complications and extreme fees. I chose rush card due to having a bad experience with a certain bank and their services. I am completely through with Rushcard. I have no way to access my money because of them. I have to borrow money from relatives until I can get access to my own money. Ive called them everyday and held on to the phone for hours trying to speak with someone and the damn phone just hangs up. All this complay have done is ripped people off.

I just called in to make sure my rushcard wasn’t one of those affected. To my dismay I entered my ss# and I was prompted to hold on. Now the automated prompter says that they could not identity my information. Okay here’s where its starting to get scary. I’m expecting my ssdi check next week. Rent, phone bill, insurance payments,and etc…,. If my money isn’t on my card then I Dont know what I’ll do. This is so unfair to and for the people who cannot or choose not to deal with banks. I used to have a rushcard when they first came out. I think it was like 02-03. I stopped using the card because of excessive fees that were incurring on my card. I started using rush card again in October 2015. The reason being is because I was with another company that said company. Which is account now was charging $9.95 for a maintenance fee. I was tired of account now taking $10 from me. This is my $$$ why should they get 10% of my $$$ for nothing. So, I called in to switch from account now to rushcard. This is and was the biggest mistake I’ve made in awhile. After this is rectified rushcard and Russell Simmons can go to ***!!!!!!!
