Rolling Stone has named its 10 best mixtapes of 2013.
The publication released its list, with Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap leading the charge at #1.
“Chicago’s Chance the Rapper established himself in 2013 as the strongest new voice in Hip Hop: cool enough for the teens, thoughtful enough for the old heads, pop enough to open for Lil Wayne, and with his street bona fides established by virtue of his coming out of Chicago’s rap scene,” Rolling Stone writes regarding the project. “On Acid Rap he recalls a number of the greats — young Kanye in lush sonics, Slim Shady in spastic flow, Kendrick in inquisitive worldview — but the full-length is precocious enough to make those comparisons feel like positive premonitions rather than millstones.”
Yesterday (December 10), it was reported that Acid Rap was also named one of NPR’s “50 Favorite Albums Of 2013.”
In an interview published December 9, Rapsody championed Chance for his rhymes.
“One thing I love is that he doesn’t sound like anybody,” Rapsody said of Chance. “I was just talking to someone the other day, and you can’t put [Chance] in a one lane, category, or one box. It’s Hip Hop, but it’s also funky, and he sings on it, so he’s got all these different characteristics, ideas and sounds that he brings together and makes his own. And when he dances, you know it’s Chicago, ‘cause I see a similar thing in Vic Mensa who’s also from Chicago. So that’s what I love, and it’s fun and honest. I actually got to see [Chance] record when he did “Lonely Thoughts” from my [She Got Game] record. And he’s just natural, raw talent. The boy has a gift, so that’s what I enjoy. He does what he feels, and it’s like, ‘I don’t have to do this just for Hip Hop. I’m just going to do what I feel like doing.'”
Rolling Stone featured other emcees as part of its mixtape list. Action Bronson’s Blue Chips 2 and Migos’ Young Rich Niggas help round out the list’s Top 3 mixtapes of the year, according to the publication.
The entire list can be viewed at Rolling Stone.
